Coach John Derrow passes away
One of the leading figures in southeastern Ohio basketball passed away yesterday. John Derrow, who coached the Wellston Golden Rockets basketball program during two different stints, was the father of Jim Derrow who also coached the Golden Rockets and John Derrow, Jr who was an outstanding basketbal...

Re: Logan Coach Jim Huntsberger
If anyone would, please tell Coach Huntsberger that his "twin" in Wellston is awfully happy for him, but also tell him that momma liked me the most. Seriously, what a wonderful friend to have in the softball community. Congrats and remember that 400 is just around the corner. Good luck to ...

Re: Where are the quality umpires?
My first response would be the quality umpires are the ones that are in the stands and have all the answers but have not donned the blue colors or equipment in their entire lives. They have never had to make a decision that mattered in a game. I started umpiring very soon after fast-pitch softball w...

Re: Proud of you Athens
Congratulations to Athens football for their spectacular run in the play-offs. Congratulations to the 23 seniors who have bonded well these last 4 years. These guys (and the underclassmen) can hold their heads high knowing they did their best! Congratulations too to the fine staff that Coach Adams h...

Re: Traveling on dead ball inbounds play
There is not a violation for travelling if the ball is not on the playing floor (inbounds). The official should relay to the player that they are playing from a spot: the spot is usually considered 3 feet wide although it is not specified by rule. The player who is inbounding the ball can do the ick...

Re: Congrats to Sarah Evans Moore new River Valley Girls coa
Congratulations to Sarah and congratulations to River Valley on the hire. I do not for the life of me understand how anyone can be critical of a coach during the first season, but that is the nature of this business. Sarah is going to be successful and the program will be successful due to her leade...

Re: Thursday, May 17 results
Crooksville has gone back and forth between division III and division IV for several years. They have been a solid program and often do not have an outstanding record because the MVL is predominately division II. By the way, when they report their enrollment each fall, they have no idea what the cut...

Re: Best Ironladies Softball Team??
Ironman92.....old???? I am just vastly experienced...lol I along with Bobby Walton were two of the originals in umpiring softball around this area. I don't think the pitching from that era matches the pitching that we see today. There were some hitters that were very good and could have matched with...

Re: Best Ironladies Softball Team??
Jackson went to the regionals (and perhaps to the state) in 78 or 79. They played and defeated Wellston at Lancaster in the regionals. They were not playing slow pitch then. When I started umpiring in the late 70s there were some teams still playing slow pitch, but that tournament was a fast-pitch t...

I am sorry to hear about Steve's passing. I loved his enthusiasm for the Gallia Academy athletics, especially the softball.
I enjoyed his posts and comments and they will be missed. I will keep his family and the Blue Devil nation in my prayers.
