If he is serious about running then you need to consider any local 5k races you can get to. It will teach him about the endurance part of the sport. If you talk to the coach, he might even allow him to "condition" with the others over the summer once it starts. It would be a good opportunity to learn about setting a pace, correct breathing, proper form, practice habits, etc...

Tobias,
In addition to 5K's, you could also look into Junior Olympics, which is sponsored by USATF. They have youth track and field events during the summer as well as cross country meets in the fall. There are also a number of open track meets around the state of Ohio, of which many are family/kid friendly. You will just have to do some digging online to find them.

AAU/USATF clubs have their own websites that might have some info on them. A couple of clubs that my kids ran on were Capital City Striders (I think info on that club is on runwv.com and this club is out of Charleston), or Miami Valley Track Club (probably closer to you). The Ohio Middle School XC Meet also has an open race for 5-6th graders and they also have a website. Marietta hosts the Cabin Fever XC run on their home course in February. I believe you can find multiple 5K's listed on runohio.
