(Hannibal) River's Duke in record shot put

River's D.J. Duke (Trimble fans may remember him from the playoff game at Marietta) tossed the shot put 64'8 today in the Tyler (WV) Invitational, one inch off the state of West Virginia's best-ever H.S. throw by Olympian Randy Barnes (St. Albans)
Duke won the Ohio indoor title a couple weeks ago at Akron with a 62-7 throw.
Hopefully, some college in Ohio will get this kid signed on the dotted line. He'll prolly reach 65-66 in another month at this pace.

I believe that distance for Randy Barnes is a mistake. His senior year at the Gazette Relays he threw 66' 9.5".

I thought that he was going to Ashland to be coached by four time olympic hammer thrower Jud Logan?

Cookie,
I've heard that about him wanting to go to Ashland and do both events - shot and hammer - at that Division II powerhouse. Heard at the meet Saturday that Duke could play football there too since he was all-Ohio first-team 2 years in a row.
Toosmooth,
I stand corrected on that Randy Barnes throw. That's impressive, but he may get another shot at Barnes' record in that Wetzel-Tyler Track League.
Either way, it's great to see an 18-year old kid drawing huge crowds around the shot put area at a meet. Duke is the class of the OVAC (44 schools), but more than that, the state.
He'll get a big test this weekend at the Wheeling Park Pepsi Classic 4/11 with kids coming in from Cleveland, western PA, etc.

I remember him from a football playoff game his freshmen year. He was a man back then!
