While at Logan, the best, the very best athlete we ever had, yet shied away from success, was John Cosgrove. He was about 5'8" tall and high jumped 6"8"; long jumped 23' plus; ran the 100 in 10.7; high hurdles in 13.9; the 300's - one time - in sub 40; do not remember his 200 time. I remember him going over to the shotput and grabbing a shotput and tossing it about 45' on his first effort, he did much the same in the discus and walked over to the pole vault, had never had a vaulting pole in his hand, I gave him quick instruction, and his first time over a crossbar cleared 11' - on his very first attempt ever. I did my best to encourage him to become a decathalete in college but he refused to run 400's and thinks he would have "died" running the 1500. With his ability, natural strength, abundance of fast twitch muscle fibers and potential I think he could have competed in the Olympics in the decathalon. We had some other very, very good athletes in Dan Starner, Austin Rohr, Ashton Sundgren, and Allen Brandon but in my opinion John had the most potential of all of them. Coy Blair was hell on wheels in his two events and i think he, too, has Olympic potential.
