Washington County Tournament
Re: Washington County Tournament
I think this will be very interesting. The one thing that I am curious about is Marietta. I have not heard anything about them.

Re: Washington County Tournament
Warren has a bunch of xperience back from a decent team last winter. (dunfee, mason, harlow among others)
Can't discount anybody, though...this will be a strong county tournament.

Re: Washington County Tournament
Is Warren ever going to be good/dominant again? They have been very much average/bad for the last several years. There was a time not so many years ago when Warren never ever got manhandled in wrestling by anybody and was considered one of the top programs in this part of the state. What has happened? Sending a wrestler or two to state every year was a given, winning tournaments, etc.. Everything has went to crap since Santini left, is this new coach going to get things going or not? If not then its time for a change because Warren has to good of a wrestling tradition to be getting knocked around like this..They arent even coming close to fielding a full team.

hardrock21,
I think it's safe to say that things were heading down hill a couple of years before Santini retired. The last state qualifier was in 2004 and I think there was 2 or 3 years before that when there was another. Don't get me wrong, Santini had a great run and had good teams during his tenure but the program was heading downhill before he retired. Does anyone know why kids are not comming out? Look at Gallia. They have close to 30 kids. What's that guy doing different?

Re: Washington County Tournament
I'm not sure what Warren's problem is, but it's not the coach. I've been to coach Schetter's (sp?) practices, and they are as good as any I've seen any where. Warren is lucky to have him.

Which team is going to step up and take home bragging rights from this years quad?

Re: Washington County Tournament
I think Marietta is the early favorite but in order for the other 3 teams to win it will matter who gets the most pins or tech falls against marietta. I think waterford and Belpre have the best shots at knocking off marietta.

Re: Washington County Tournament
I am not sure what the final results were but my best GUESS was:
Marietta
Waterford
Belpre
Warren
Marietta just had the numbers over all the other schools. Looked like Belpre brought 8, Waterford 8 and Warren 8 or 9. Hard to win a duel with those low numbers agains a full team. However head to head it was a good night. Waterford and Belpre fought hard!

WATERFORD - It came down to the final two teams on the mats to determine the outcome of the fourth Washington County Quad wrestling tournament.
Marietta held on to defeat Waterford 54-21 in the final match of the night, thanks in part to some forfeits and hard wrestling against their three county foes.
The Tigers also defeated Belpre 46-36 and Warren 59-15.
"The whole team has been working hard," praised Marietta wrestling coach Jeff Walker.
In the last match running the Wildcats gave up six forfeits, for 36 points, to the Tigers and couldn't overcome them as Marietta put together some tough matches in the final duel.
Waterford wrestling coach Gene Paxton moved Dean Miller down a class and bumped Justin Smith up one to set up tougher matches with Scott Tebay and Justin Hasley while Marietta senior Garrett Kerr gave state placer Tyler Reed all he could handle at 119 pounds in one of the best matches of the night.
"You got Kerr wrestling a kid that placed third in the state and you ask me and it could have gone either way," Walker said.
Walker was impressed with the fortitude Kerr showed in his tough contest and had praise for the caliber of all county grapplers.
"I think all three teams that we wrestled the kids they did have were very tough," Walker praised.
Reed defeated Kerr by a 6-4 decision while in the 140-pound class Tebay defeated Smith by just three points with a 3-0 decision.
Marietta and Waterford both entered their final match having bested the other two county schools as the Wildcats beat Warren 36-24 and defeated Belpre 34-24.
"I was pretty satisfied with our matches," Paxton said.
Defending county champion Belpre picked up their lone win over the Warriors by a 48-24 score while the Warriors fell to all three county opponents.
Belpre had previously won the county tournament in 2005, the first year for the county quad, as well.
"We're finding out some stuff we need to work on," said Belpre wrestling coach Scott Adams.
The dual format tournament began with the Warriors and Wildcats facing each other while Belpre and Marietta grappled.
In the second rotation it was Marietta versus Warren and Belpre versus Waterford.
The final rotation saw the Warriors and Golden Eagles square off while the Wildcats and Tigers grappled.
Warren senior Andrew Dunfee won all three of his matches, though two came by forfeit, but he also picked up a pin of Marietta's Casey Tebay.
The Warriors Justin Rohr also fared well with one of the tougher matches of the night against Belpre's Phillip Wiggers, getting the pin with just 1:31 left in the match.
Belpre's Ashton Packard proved why he is considered one of the top grapplers in the area with an impressive tech fall of Marietta's Phil Zagunis 18-2, then followed that up with a 22-7 tech fall over Warren's Dustin Harlow.
