I would say weight lifting and staying lean to stick around the weight class they are going for next season. If they plan to play any sports before the season i would say do Football.

Now, come on. I knew that kids wrestled year round, but very few train as intensely as they do in the "wrestling" season. Also many kids in general like to play more than one sport.

Even in college we took time off! We had open mats twice every week in the off season, but were only allowed to drill. Once a month we wrestled live.

I think it is a good thing to have time away from it. It allows you to heal up and you don't get burned out.

"Burned out" is losing sight of your goals. This subject depends on the mind set of the kid. There are couple of kids that are coming to the open mats at NYHS that I believe would wrestle everyday all day if they could. That is why they are so good. I wrestled year around when I was in HS and I am still involved close to year around and know some athletes compete year around. Most of which stand on top of the podium at the state tournament. It depends on the kid, if the kid "wants" to be on the mat then he will get better. I am not saying that you cannot succeed at this sport and play other sports, but to get better at wrestling you must wrestle. Playing other sports can teach you skills needed to be a better athlete (stronger/ quicker/ hand-eye/ etc.), if you like playing other sports then do everything you can while you are are young because you cannot get that back. But wrestling makes you better at wrestling!!! There is no way around that.

I agree with what you're saying there: to get better at wrestling, you need to wrestle.
