OVU wrestlers make history with dual meet win Fighting Scots defeat WV Tech, 37-3
VIENNA - Even after history was made Tuesday night inside the Snyder Activity Center on the campus of Ohio Valley University, head wrestling coach Pat Sole was far from ecstatic.
The first-year mat boss of the Fighting Scots watched his squad conduct the first home wrestling meet in school history, which turned out pretty well considering OVU dropped West Virginia Tech, 37-3, in a dual match.
"Coming back from a holiday break I thought we could've been more aggressive," said Sole, who watched Kobina Henriques (174) and Blake Lucas (285) earn wins by forfeit while a double forfeit was recorded at 133.
The Golden Bears of head man Jake Brumbelow captured their lone triumph when 141-pounder John Walters bested OVU's Christopher Robbins, 5-3. The freshman Walters registered the first takedown 27 seconds into the opening period and went ahead for good 23 seconds into the third on an escape.
"There were situations we had a chance to score and we didn't," added coach Sole. "But, they kept coming.
"We're young and we have a long way to go, but every week they're progressing and getting better."
Ohio Valley, which is now 3-2 in dual matches, took the lead for good when 125-pounder Tyler Reed opened the match with a 12-1 major decision against Anthoney Green. Reed, a former Ohio state placer at Waterford, needed 14 seconds to take the lead for good and led 5-0 just 52 ticks into the match when he got near fall points.
Garrett Wireman of OVU got a takedown on the edge of the mat at 2:34 of the first against Mark Cooper in the 149 battle. After Wireman worked for a trio of back points he allowed a reversal, but cruised to an 8-3 decision.
WVU Tech found itself down 11-3 in the team scoring after Tyler George worked Adam Rutter, who graduated from Ripley, for an 11-0 major decision at 157. George, an ex-Williamstown Yellowjacket state placer, got a shot in on Rutter's leg and earned the takedown late in the first period and was not seriously challenged. Coach Sole, though, said George has been dealing with a bad shoulder and might've wrestled his final match of the campaign.
Another former local high school state placer, Parkersburg South graduate Coleby Richards, gave the Fighting Scots a 14-3 lead following his 10-3 decision versus Josh Vance at 165.
Brad Clark waltzed to a 16-1 technical fall for OVU against Mark Ward in the 184-pound division. Clark got a takedown in 21 seconds and then scored six near fall points before the first minute of the match had elapsed.
Bodie Grass of WVU Tech nearly made the second period against Ohio Valley's Chase Long at 197, but the Fighting Scot freshman stuck his opponent in 2:59 to garner the lone pin of the night.
"I'm just honored that the school has given us the potential to start something that can last forever here and something the community can buy into," Sole said.
"They can see these young men progress, get an education and hopefully we can grow this thing to where it potentially becomes real big."
OVU returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday with a road trip to Pitt-Johnstown for a dual.
