Coal Grove Hornets Golf team advances to District!

Post by Pocket Aces »

Congratulations to coaches Dan Morgan and Frank Mullens. You guys are great teachers of the game, you mean a lot to those boys.

KEEP IT GOING!

FRIENDSHIP – Area high school golfers gathered on Wednesday for the Division III Sectional Tournament at Shawnee Golf Course and the top three teams and individuals will be moving onto the District Tournament in Circleville.

West Union came in with the lowest team score of 331 followed by Coal Grove at 365.

The only local team to advance to districts was Notre Dame snagging the third and final spot with a score of 367.

It is another achievement in a season that has already seen the Titans win the SOC I and senior David Medley earn the SOC player of the year award.

“This year was a good year for us and it has been nice to win the SOC since Clay has dominated it for the past ten years,” Notre Dame coach Bill Angelos said. “To top it off today was getting out of the sectionals to go on to districts.”

Medley continued his year-long run as he came in with the second lowest score of 79 on Wednesday.

“If David continues to improve he will have a chance to go to states,” Angelos said.

Medley is one of three players that have been playing for Angelos since they were freshmen, the others being Weston Craig and Tyler Noel.

“I’ve had three of these kids since they were in the ninth grader and I’m happy for the boys because of all the work they have put in,” Angelos said. “We practice almost every day so I am happy they were able to execute on the course. I’m glad they were able to bring it home and get us on to districts.”

Being one of the best teams in the area is a great accomplishment for the Titans but their goals are loftier than local bragging rights.

“You always have a chance at districts but you have to win at districts to get to states and if some of our players continue to improve we have a real chance to advance on,” Angelos said.

There are some areas of concern that will need attention before next Wednesday’s trip to Circleville.

“We need to improve our short game,” “The greens here were fast today and so we need to learn how to putt on fast greens. I’m don’t know how Pickaway’s course will be and we will have an idea after we get a practice round in but it is all about chipping and putting in the short game.”

The top three individual finishers that will be advancing to the District Tournament were the top three golfers for Manchester in Malachi Evans, Tyler Brummett and Marshall Spencer.

Spencer had a one-hole playoff and won on a bogey putt to claim the final spot in the individuals.

Evans has qualified for districts for all four seasons of his high school career.

The District Tournament will be at 9 a.m. on Oct. 4 at Pickaway Country Club in Circleville.

Coal Grove has a great group of golfers. Have watched them play several times this season. My family wishes them nothing but the best Tuesday at the Districts. This will be such a great memory for them win or lose. Also Luke great season for you. Hoping you have some more come out for a team next year. Keep working in the off season and you will be at districts next year too.

Also have to say congrats to the West Union team and their coach. It has been a great 4 years competing against you guys. Best of luck to Tanner Huntley.

Have fun guys and remember "Keep it in the short grass".

Grove struggled today at District. Good experience and great season. Keep working hard and even better results await you next season and beyond.

Congrats to freshman Brent Morgan for qualifying for state!
