Portsmouth Girls Tennis

Post by TrojanHorse »

If anyone follows SEOAL girls tennis, be sure to count in the Portsmouth High School team as a strong contender this year and for the next several years. The team coached by Amy Keating has 15 young, but experienced players including two USTA ranked freshman who are playing on the varsity squad. The team is already 4-0 this season with #1 singles Ashleigh Link (Jr.) undefeated and #3 singles Kaylyn Purdy (So.) 3-1. The two freshmen are Caroline Khoury playing #2 singles with a 3-1 record and Leda Daehler playing #1 doubles with Crystal Carpenter (So.) who are 3-1. The #2 doubles Kayla Rodino (So.) and Katelyn Carter (So.) are 4-0.

The team has played Valley (3-2), Minford (4-1), Jackson (5-0) and Ironton (5-0). Upcoming opponents include Chillicothe (Tues., September 2) and Wheelersburg (Wed., September 3). Both teams have strong players, but they need to be aware of a much improved PHS squad.

Does anyone have updates on the how the Chillicothe and Wheelersburg girls teams are doing?

The PHS girls team is now 5-1 having lost their only match to the Chillicothe girls at OU Chillicothe.

The match with Wheelersburg played on Sept 3rd is still undecided. Darkness set in as the #2 doubles match went to a tie breaker in the third and deciding set. PHS lost to Dever (2-1) and Pierron (2-0), but picked up wins in #3 singles and #1 doubles. According to the coaches, the tie breaker will be played when the two teams meet on September 17th at Portsmouth's Mound Park courts. The Trojan girls are 3-1 in SEOAL play.

Sorry to step in but the #2 Doubles were in their second set an the tie breaker got called for darkness...The match could possibly go into a third set...That tie breaker will be played first thing on the 17th when the pirates travel to portsmouth for that match. Wheelersburgs #2 doubles team consisting of Stamper and Phillips had won the first set.

Pirate Pride, you are right. My mistake.

This week the Portsmouth team went 12-3 beating Waverly 5-0 and Minford 5-0. The Ironton match was rained out on Tuesday.

Portsmouth lost to Chillicothe last night 2-3. PHS won both doubles matches, but lost the 3 singles. Portsmouth has moved #2 singles Freshman Caroline Khoury and #3 singles Sophomore Kaylyn Purdy to play together as #1 doubles. The #2 doubles team remains the same with Kayla Rodino and Katelyn Carter who are undefeated in season play.

Freshman Leda Daehler has moved up to #2 singles and Junior Crystal Carpenter to #3 singles. Junior Ashleigh Link remains at #1 singles. This will probably be the lineup for the upcoming SEOAL tournament and the District later this month.

Tomorrow (Wed.) will be the big matchup between the PHS girls and Wheelersburg girls tennis teams. Not only will they be playing their return match, but also will finish the Wheelersburg contest that was called because of darkness two weeks ago. The teams are tied 2-2 with the #2 doubles having to finish a second-set tie-breaker. Wheelersburg won the first set.

Both teams play very well and this afternoon of play will be one of the best matchups of the short tennis season. Good luck to both teams!

It is unusual for girls tennis to have good players even in the #2 doubles. There is usually such a drop in talent after the #1 singles. That is what makes this matchup so much fun to watch.
