2011 GAHS spring athletes honored

More than 75 Gallipolis Gallia Academy High School spring athletes were honored Monday evening in the GAHS auditorium during the annual spring sports awards ceremony.
After reviewing their respective 2011 campaigns, head coaches
Rich Corvin, baseball, Jim Niday, softball, Alex Penrod, tennis along with Rick Howell and Paul Close, boys and girls track-field, the coaches introduced members of their squads.
The baseball and softball squads were crowned 2011 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League champions and the boys and girls track and field teams captured the 2011 district championships and will take part in the state regionals this weekend.
All-SEOAL honorees were recognized.
They were—Tennis, Cody Billings and Bryce Amos.
Softball—Hannah Cunningham, Morgan Leslie, Courtney Shriver, Mattie Lanham, Heather Ward, Kari Campbell, and Claudia Farney. Ward was SEOAL Player of the Year and Jim Niday was SEOAL Coach of the Year.
Baseball—Tyler Eastman, Caleb Warnimont, Casey Denbow, Tyler Davis, Jimmy Clagg, Justin Bailey and Ben Saunders. Rich Corvin was named SEOAL Coach of the Year.
Track and field—Austin Wilson, Payton Adkins, Matt Watts, Frank Goff, Ethan Moore, Tyler Campbell, Jon Caldwell, Samantha Barnes, and McKenna Warner.
About 90 percent of the 2011 GAHS athletes were named All-SEOAL Academic honorees this year. Athletic director Craig Wright said this was one of the brightest groups of athletes to earn All Academic SEOAL honors in school history.
The following athletes received Player of the Year and All-Academic awards.
Girls Spring Sports Scholastic Award—Hannah Cunningham. The award was sponsored by the GAHS Academic Boosters and presented by Josh Donley, assistant principal.
Boys Spring Sports Scholastic Award—(First time in history a four-way tie)—David Saunders, Ben Robinson, Caleb Warnimont, and Cody Billings. The award was sponsored by the GAHS Academic boosters and presented by Josh Donley, assistant principal.
Most Valuable Tennis Player—Cody Billings. Sponsored by The Wiseman Agency and presented by Jimmy Wiseman.
Most Valuable Softball Player—Heather Ward. Sponsored by Coaches Corner and presented by Craig Wright, athletic director.
Most Valuable Baseball Players—Tyler Eastman and Caleb Warnimont. Sponsored by Coaches Corner and presented by Craig Wright, athletic director.
Girls Most Valuable Track—Payton Adkins and Hannah Watts. The awards were presented by the Gallipolis FFA and presented by Tim Massie, GAHS principal.
Boys Most Valuable Track—Austin Wilson. Sponsored by Norris Northup Dodge and presented by GAHS Principal Tim Massie.
Wright served as master of ceremonies. More than 300 attended the event sponsored by the GAHS Athletic Boosters.
