WILLOW WOOD — There are a lot of reasons why the Symmes Valley Vikings cruised past the Portsmouth Notre Titans Friday night.

About 22 reasons to be exact.

The Vikings turned in a strong all-around performance by the offense and defense in a 61-13 win that gave them the Southern Ohio Conference football championship.

“I wish I could point out one thing, but we played well in all facets of the game. Our kids played extremely well,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb.

The offense amassed 533 rushing yards led by Alec Herrell who ran 10 times for 115 yards. He also scored four touchdowns, one through the air.

D.J. Miller had 80 yards on 12 carries and two scores, Tyler Rowe ran four times for 77 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Cody Myers rushed 10 times for 77y ads and also hit 3 of 4 passes for 44 yards and a score.

The defense also held the Titans offense in check until late in the game when the backups took over.

The SOC championship was the first for the Vikings (8-1, 4-0) since the 2004 season.

“We played four quarters. We got the SOC championship and I’m proud of all these players,” said Webb.

The Vikings went 50 yards in seven plays to get on the scoreboard as Herrell ran the final 5 yards. Eli Ash kicked the extra point.

Notre Dame (7-2, 2-1) tied the game on a 1-yard scoring run by Jack Kayser to cap a 52-yard, 9-play drives et up by Brendan Hoover’s fumble recovery.

But Myers returned the kickoff 57 yards to the Titans’ 35 and four plays later Herrell scored from 15 yards out and it was 13-7.

Symmes Valley recovered a fumble at the 21 and Herrell scored from 5 yards out just three plays later and it was 19-7.

An interception by Miller at the 1-yard line stopped a Titans’ scoring threat and the Vikings went the 99 yards for a touchdown in only three plays.

A 64-yard run by Rowe was the key play and then Myers hit Herrell on a 33-yard pass play to open up a 26-7 cushion.

Symmes Valley scored three touchdowns in the third quarter — one set up by a fumble and the other on an interception — to open up a 47-7 lead.

Miller had scoring runs of 14 and 12 yards sandwiched around a 1-yard run by Rowe.

The Vikings’ second team scored on a 48-yard run by Dustin Holbrook and it was 53-7.

Notre Dame got a 1-yard scoring run by John Major with three minutes to play, but the Vikings’ Tanner Mays broke loose on a 55-yard touchdown run less than a minute later and Josh Dial’s conversion run completed the scoring.

The Vikings play at South Gallia (8-1) next week in a big computer playoff points game.

I'm not sure you Willow Wood-ians are reading correctly. I clearly stated SV won fair and that officiating had no effect on the score. I AM NOT MAKING EXCUSES, I said that SV was the better team. But obviously other teams agree with me, and obviously this guy does more than 1 game at SV per year. He actually threw out Kyle McKnight (coached before Coach Ashley) a few years ago AT SV.

Doesn't the SOC assign officials for league games? If not, they should.

I think there is a grievance process for coaches where the film shows a blown call by an official. It, of course, will not change the call, but if confirmed on a consistant basis, that official can be put on notice he is being watch by the Ohio Athletic Association and possibly lose his status as an official if there is enough evidence of favoritism to any particular team.

During the regular season ...no
During the playoffs ...yes

During the regular season the officiating crews can request games from the ADs but that doesn't mean that they will receive the games. During the playoffs it's entirely different selection of officials.

I’m sure if this exists then this is the form that the observers would use. This is located on OHSAA’s website here is the link. http://www.ohsaa.org/officials/forms/FTobsv.PDF

So he threw out McKnight. Various views of that some say he deserved it and some he didn't. But then his behavior had ND get rid of him that year. Just because you say your not making excuses does not mean your not. As you continue to come up with more excuses. It still will not change the score of this or any game played.

This is the first year I remember that ref. Doing more than 1 game a S. V. and yes that crew did toss Kyle that night but I believe that most refs would have that night. Ok let me have it I know it is coming. Do not think he threw that many flags on N D Friday but whatever. Great job Vikings maybe We may meet again in the playoffs. Hope they have their running back back by then and we get a different crew.

I don't know who that ref is and I have lived at Symmes Valley my hole life and I agree is is terrible. Symmes Valley did dominate this game from start to finish. ND has a good looking team and I wish them well. I don't care for the smack talk, I love good honest opinions, makes for a good discussing. I hope ND finishes strong this weekend and makes it into the playoffs. I hope Symmes Valley finishes strong and looking forward to a home playoff game. Best of luck to both teams.

I attended the game. I left thinking the officials were not really a factor.

If memory serves me

2 holds on ND
1 Pass interferance on SV
2 Blocks in Back on SV
a Couple delays and offsides

not a lot of calls for two hard hitting teams ?

Correct me if I am incorrect....

The officials for the game against notre dame was a substitute group of officials the orginal group of the officials that had the game had the date of the game scheduled for Saturday and they already had a game scheduled for that Friday, so Symmes Valley had to find a group of officials that had an opening and it happened to be the same group of officials from last week, Rusty trys not to schedule the same group of officials twice in a season. And the one big official lives in Ironton, I know him personally and I will agree some of his calls may have been questionable but it was calls in both teams, hopefully both teams can put this game behind us and look forward to this week and possibly playing one another in the playoffs the week after.
