Re: Week 9 (8-0) Lucasville Valley @ (7-1) Wheelersburg
As I sit here today, hoping to be able to put enough pressure on my kee (I just had knee surgery last week) to be able to go to the game, I couldn't help but let my mind wonder. When you are forced to spend most of your time sitting in a chair with your leg propped up, that tends to happen a lot. lol I've thought a little about a lot of the things posted on this thread, about games of the past, about pride, about what it takes to maintain success as a true "program" in the sense that the word is often used in sports slang and the type of character that I enjoy seeing out of young people and adults alike.
One thing in particular came to the forefront of my thoughts that I think can serve as a litteral and metaphorical example of a lot of my thoughts. I was reminded of a simple statement made by a lot of Ironton posters before the Valley-Ironton District Semifinal Basketball game several years ago. At the time I didn't know the guys making the statements, but as the years went on, circumstance brought them into my life and we became friends. Valley had a very talented team that year and Ironton was a bit of an unknown to me that year. I was very bold and confident in my prediction regarding that game. In response, the Ironton folks didn't get angry or lash out. They were also confident. They simply stated, "We'll show up." And, on game day, "show up" they did. From the opening tip until the final buzzer they owned the Indians and the game. They won in a blow-out and then handled it with class afterward, because they knew they were talented and they didn't need to hear it from me or anyone else for that matter. I gained a ton of respect for that community as a result, in addition to the respect I already had for them as a "football school".
One of the things that I've noticed about this team from Valley this year is they "show up" every week. Valley has had excellent talent in the past, but as with many high school kids, they haven't always "showed up" to play every week. In my opinion, that is one of the most respected things about programs like Ironton and Wheelersburg. Those kids "show up" every week and believe they can win. The kids believe. The communities believe. The coaches believe. Other communities believe. Hopefully, tonight will prove what I believe about this year's Valley team. I believe they will "show up" tonight ready to play and absolutely get after it for four quarters against a quality opponent who will also "show up" ready to play, believing they can win.
Let's go PURPLE!!!!!!!!

They will be on Burg like gravy on mashed potatoes.
Agreed! Like white on rice! Seen them both play, wasn't super impressed with Burg. Will be amazed if they keep this game close or even pull out a win. More unusual things have happened though. I think the big uglies up front for Valley completely dominate and control the momentum from start to finish.
How could any Minford fan not be impressed by the Burg. Even in a "rebuilding year" for the Burg, once again they totally dominate the Falcons. Take away that first drive and No. 1, Minford doesn't score and B. They have less than 100 yards of offense. This is against a "down team" from the Burg. That game could have easily been 35-6.
I just love you posters that get your azz's handed to your team and you still can admit they were a good team.
If valley hands it to the Burg, I will be on here congratulating them and wishing them well come playoff time. I would expect the same from the Valley posters if they lose.
Good Luck Pirates.
On a side note, wink, buddy you need to stay out of this thread and get back on Minford-Waverly. After watching the Falcons last week, I'm not real sure they can beat the Tigers

Hey, ole buddy, I've seen you post on every thread on here week after week so you need to go down to the drugstore and buy a couple of boxes of bandaides for your wounds after tonight.yabbadabbadoo wrote:

Yabba,
Win or lose, I will definitely show Burg the same respect you will show Valley. I agree with you and I believe both teams have earned that mutual respect.

Sorry guys, after watching Burg on the zone I can say I'm not as impressed as some. While Minford didn't play very well, in large part because of the Burg D, Burg only true success came because of Minford turnovers. Burg did move the ball better and pick up some first downs, but they were not impressive on the offensive side of the ball. The defense did play very well and they are probably pretty good on this side of the ball, but Minford has been anything but an offensive power this season. I think Valley is going to have their way tonight. I watched this game 2 or 3 times and tried my best to do it with an unbiased view point, but I think Valley is at least 2 to 3 scores better. Best of luck tonight!
PS, crab_apple4... Congrats on a really nice jr high season. I came to a handful of games and you and coach Spriggs really did a nice job.

This thread has delivered as I expected, a little bit of everything, and some very well thought out posts. There were times when it got a little maddening the way people were going off on tangents, but in the end, this was very entertaining.
Good luck to both squads tonight, hope that both teams come out injury free. It is a given and I don't need to say the play hard part, I'm sure the kids from both schools are going to bring it.
Hopefully, this game will be everything that everyone has hoped for, and then some. Stay warm, enjoy the game, and may the better team win!

DING DING DING! Minford is not that impressive this year, I will be the first to admit it. Someone (YABBABANDPLAYER or MOUTHYDAN) show me where I said they were.
But Burg is NOT impressive after watching them play Minford. They may show something different tonight, and they better if they want to hang around in this game long at all.
