This might be Marietta's year to beat down the Big Reds.
Tigers have a potent running game and two good quarterbacks (a thrower and a runner).
Defense will be the key to who wins this game...

I'd say this game is close until the 3rd quarter. Then Marietta pulls away. They get a chance to work on their passing game after that. Go Tigers!

This one could be fun to watch, the two best RB's in the Washington/Wood County area. They put a combined 575 yards last Friday.

I hope the Tigers can get win number two! I am not from Marietta, but love going there because of the community and how much they support each other! Its a really good place and nice town, plus a great field to watch high school football.

Good luck Tigers

sounds like its going to be an ol fashion keep it on the ground game...i talked to a big red fan and he said they have no defense so it sounds like it could be a high scoring affair...good to the tigers from another washington county team...

This is a game that goes back for many generations.
Mtta/P-burg have played many times. My dad played for the tigers in the 30's, yes the 1930's. I can remember him telling me about how rough and physical of a game is was. So this could be a big statement for the tigers to re-new this long time rivalery. I look for both teams to be ready and very willing to knock heads. I will root for the Ohio team in a game that will be 7 to 10 points either way. Go Tigers...

Oh by the way my mom was a Big Red. So I got two points of view on this one.

Big Reds must find a way to stop someone on defense.

Giving up 43 to anyone is a NO No at Parkersburg

Both schools RBs, Wasonga and Wheeler, will give the other team nightmares in finding a way to slow them down.

The one team that gets something out of their passing game or special teams will more than likely win.

I'm saying Parkersburg in another shootout 42-35.

MHS vs PHS selected in Rivalry Series...

Presented by the United States Marine Corps, the Great American Rivalry Series for 2009 features 16 games all across the nation pitting the most outstanding high school football rivalries.

When the Big Reds got Ohio River rival Marietta back on the schedule this year, the GARS naturally picked up the Sept. 4 home game at Parkersburg's Stadium Field. From 1906, when the series began, the Big Reds and Tigers met 97 times - making it (at the time) the longest high school football rivalry in the nation.

When scheduling restrictions with the Mountain State Athletic Conference changed prior to this year, Marietta was immediately returned to the schedule and the rivalry resumed.

Richard A Ford, CEO of the Great American Rivalry Series, says, "We believe in the power this series has to highlight top high school football rivalries, which includes your annual contest with Marietta."

As part of the participation in the series, a senior football letterman from both schools with the highest GPA will be awarded a college scholarship. For the Marietta squad that is Senior Todd Stacy. He is a 2-year letter winner and member of the varsity track team. He is involved in FFA (past 6 years) and in 4-H. Todd has received his State Farmer Degree and placed in the Dairy Judging and tractor trouble shooting team. He currently owns and operates a sweet corn operation and plans to attend OHS ATI @ Wooster, OH next year.

One alumni player from each school will be inducted into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame. Rick Phillips, a 1983 all-stater who went on to become an All-American at West Virginia University, was the player selected to the Hall of Fame to represent the Big Reds.

Marietta's Pat MacRae was selected as Marietta honoree. Pat was an instrumental member of the 1990 Marietta Tigers and stepped to the forefront during their rivalry game vs. Parkersburg High School. MacRae was the trigger man who intercepted a pass and galloped 82 yards to put Marietta ahead 6-0 during the first quarter from his outside linebacker position. The tigers never looked back and never relinquished the lead from that point. On the offense side of the ball MacRae also quarterbacked for the Tigers, passing for two more touchdowns and a total of over 100 yards.

Among the other 15 games selected for the 2009 season are: Lowndes vs. Valdosta (GA) on Oct. 9 and St. Edwards vs. St. Ignatius at Lakewood (OH) on Oct. 31. There is also a website which will feature more information on select games.

That site is http://www.greatamericanrivalry.com

This will be another great game. Part of high school athletics is the memories that are created. Being a part of the Marietta / Parkersburg football game is a great experience that you will always remember. For the seniors, they only get one chance to win the game. Go for it !!!

As alumni, I was very happy to see Parkersburg returned to the schedule. This is not the 60's, 70's and even the 80's when the 2 schools were much closer in size. Today Parkersburg is much bigger than Marietta. That is the beauty and the challenge of the game.

Head Coach Andy Schob, his staff, and the administration should be commended for resuming this game. It is also nice to see P-burg South on the schedule. Coach Schob has the "Tiger" program on the rise. Good luck Friday night at Parkersburg.

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE MARIETTA A. D. WHO WAS QUOTE IN THE MARIETTA TIMES (BACK IN THE 90'S WHEN THE SERIES WAS DROPPED) THAT THIS GAME WAS NOT REALLY A RIVALRY? MAYBE WE COULD EMAIL HIM THE ABOVE ARTICLE.

GO TIGERS !

Jay Long was the coach of the Marietta Team when it was dropped

I beleive Glenn Gillespie was the AD
Glenn went on to win a D 2 State Championship with Sylvania Southview HS as an AD

I had always heard it was Jay Long who wanted it dropped? schenk 11 might have a better clue?

as a former MHS player this game was a huge rivarly it was fun in 1990 playing @ Don Drumm and being the good guys and getting a big win before the biggest crowd I have ever seen at the stadium
then as a senior traveling to stadium field and being the bad guys and losing a heart breaking game 6-2
seems like yesterday but who is counting the years-I have many fond memories of the MHS VS PHS series

Coach Schob and Rick Guimond did a great thing and renewing this game
Coach Schob has a horse and will ride him!
GO TIGERS!

This is going to be a much tougher game for Marietta, its going to be hard to stop PHS's running back (a d1 prospect) yeah I know I heard that Marietta has a very good running back I just think PHS defense will be back this upcoming week making it much harder for Marietta's runningback to get loose for alot of yards he will still get over 100 but below 200 with PHS's running back going over 200. PHS 31 Marietta 24

Wasonga went for 247 yards rushing in his Parkersburg debut last Friday night.

I'm sure plenty of defenders will be chasing him into the end zone this year. The kids a stud!!

It was Tom Peterson wasn't it. Didn't Gillespie leave after the 1993-1994 school year. I can not remember exactly though.
