All Time OVC Team
Re: All Time OVC Team
Robbie Issacs---Wideout Chesapeake---ran a 10.66 100m, faster then TT's 10.8-10.9
TT was not the fastest guy from South Point for that Matter---Donte Pennington

Re: All Time OVC Team
From Oak Hill (yes they were in the OVC at the time) in the mid 70's, Doug Hale, lineman and Tim Williams running back. Williams rushed for 2,093 yards his senior year and was the Class A State Back of the Year. Hale, the current Oak Hill girl's basketball coach, was the lineman of the year, I believe the following year.
Re: All Time OVC Team
I have no clue how fast Hall was but according to your trck board he is not faster then Dusty. I have not seen anyone faster then Issacs, and that is not because he is from Chespapeake, just have not seen it. He was offered a track scholarship from every school in the country.
There have been some fast kids but not fast like him. Some players that come to mind who were in the 10.9-11.1 range from the OVC are : Cody Hunt, Josh Waugh, Donte Pennington, Dusty Smith, TT Johnson.

Re: All Time OVC Team
Robbie Isaacs is the fastest........ Jerrell Dean is the strongest...... Sam Huff is the quickest and best all around WR in my opinion....especially if you go by stats..... grades killed his career
Re: All Time OVC Team
Sam Huff and Robbie Issacs are in two different classes. Sam was a very good athlete and a good wideout, but was not even close to the athlete that Issacs was. Issacs was bigger, faster, stronger, jump higher. There is a reason Issacs was recruited by the big boys and Sam was not. Sam was a very good OVC wideout, but he was not in the same stratosphere.
What do you mean quickest? Quickest off the line of scrimmage, in open space, just quickest overall? He may have been quickest off the line, but he was not even close to several of the other players mentioned.
Stats mean little honestly. Issacs caught maybe 4 balls a game, while Huff caught 7-8 a game because of the offense he was in. The difference was that of those 4 balls thrown to Issacs two of them went for touchdowns.
I do not know who Jerrel Dean is. Who is he and where did he play?

Re: All Time OVC Team
Sam Huff the best WR? Are you being serious?
I played with Robbie and I have yet to see a wideout in the OVC that would match up with him.
I have said this about Sam from day 1 when Fairland people used to argue how good he was all the time, he was a solid conference player. Issacs was a divison 1 player while Sam was an above average wideout in an offense that threw it 30 times a game.
Go back and look at what Sam did against top competition. I do not remember Huff ever doing anything against Chesapeake. Shane Holsinger was a much better wideout and athlete then Huff. Jeff Thornburg and Dustin O'Brian were comparable to Huff.
To even insist that he was close to Robbie is laughable.

Re: All Time OVC Team
Just a few that I can remember...
John Scott Rock Hill/Ohio State/Buffalo Bills
Jerry Fields Coal Grove/Ohio State/New York Jets
Mike Holtzapfel Ironton St Joe/Notre Dame National Championship Team
Sunny Stowers Chesapeake/Navy
Hunter Skinner Fairland
Billy Poe Rock Hill/Morehead/Cinn Bengals
Dane Conwell South Point/WVU
Lou Mains Ironton St Joe/Morehead
Dick White Rock Hill/Iowa State
Maybe someone can help me with this one. A lineman from South Point that went on to play for the Kentucky Wildcats in the late 50's. Played on the same team as Don Fitzpatrick. There have been some great ones play in the OVC.

Re: All Time OVC Team
When it coms to OVC sports it is pretty tought to stump killer & Earp. They should have their own show like stump the schwab. I grew up from k -8th grade attending fairland and played on many traveling AAU sports Teams & played my highschool years @ Huntington East High School. I would have to agree that Dean Wilks was by far the Best offensive lineman that came through that neck of the woods . I remember watching him move men like they were children to make holes for guys like Paul Short who was a work horse . I remembe the infamous Coal Grove Fairland game @ with plenty r of bad calls the two field goals that Andy Maynard made that were good but called misses . I would anchor my line with Dean any day. As far as Robby Isaacs goes I believe he still holds man track records by far was the best WR the OVC has to do to date he is on the original college foorball game for ps1 or sega. You speak of ut I re TT Johnson who was lightning fast ut robby was even faster than him but I remember TT senior year he was used as a decoy for sp to pound the ball with Mark MaloneThere was a guy who went to fairland that held several state reords for quite a few years I beleven ieve the 200 & triple jump by the name of Matt Dillon. To put TT speed into perspective he wasnt the fastest guy in the tri-state , there was a guy name ROBERT WALKER (who married george & Kenny Newmans Sister ) that went to to huntington high & played @ wvu when they beat miami as a freshman wheb he was the starting HB . During TT & Robert Walkers senior year they ran against one another twice both times Robert was the winner during one race I attended Robert slipped coming out of the blocks & everyone thought for sure he was done he not only caught TT but won the race . While we are mentioning great local athletes I watched Sean Jackson play as a kid , kevin wells of CK could light it up as well. While attending east I played against Randy Moss in baseball he was an all state center fielder , also competed against both he & jason williams in bbll & Randy in Football. Some of you from the tri-state may have heard of a guy named charlie king who went to cammack & huntington high in 7th grade he was ripping rims he was the original OJ MAYO. Not only was he the basketball player n the state & yes he is the same age as moss but he was the best football & baseball in the tri state & the entire state of wv.Randy & him were friends from AAU sports & moss Marshall days but Charlie & him still remain frieds . Charlie was bigger , stroger & faster @ everything when it came to football charlie was the only one ever to shut him down , moss ran about a 4.25 charlie 4.21 he could jump higher not to mention he was the best basketball player in the state . Did I MENTION he threw a baseball over 90 some miles per hour.......Why we are talking about local sports history there is a man who went to huntington high who now resides in proctorville who did hold the wv highschool baseball record for most wins by a pitcher in one season . His name was Pete Thackston & he did it as a freshman
Re: All Time OVC Team
From 'WAY back...TOMMY COOPER, scatback at Peake on the '50s, in Chesy HOF
DEEDS..I believe his first name was Tim...at CG
SONNY STOWERS...Good as any OVC player I know of
D. L. MC WHORTER...TE at Peake, could pull the ball outta a crowd as good as anyone
CURTIS HAMLIN, Peake LB, OL
ROCK HILL'S QB, early 200s..his name escapes me right now
MICHAEL HILL, Fairland QB
My nephew ZEB BEST, both sides of the ball at FB & LB, & my son MARK ROBY at MLB, leading tackler/sacker. also played FB as a senior
There were several very good C-K players when that school was in the OVC as well as some from my alma mater, Vinson. (Don'tcha just *HATE* consolidation?)

Re: All Time OVC Team
Names that come to mind right off the bat from CG:
The duo of Randy Hardy and Kevin Markins in the late 70s, culminating with the undefeated season of 1979.
Hardy was all-OVC his last three years at CG, and All-State honorable mention his junior and senior years.
Markins was All-District his junior and senior years and All-State honorable mention his senior year. A real thunder and lightening backfield.

Also at QB: JD Humphrey - 1st-Team All-State for the semi-finalist 1990 Coal Grove team. Actually, that whole team was just outstanding. Lol

Re: All Time OVC Team
Larry McCloud (I believe that's the name I want) running back of the West Virginia State Champion Buffalo-Wayne in 1992, but did not win the OVC that year.
I agree with J.D. fuzz but you have to also mention Tim Davidson and Jon Woodruff, they were probably they best QB,FB,RB trio the Grove has had in the OVC era.

Re: All Time OVC Team
I didnt read through the entire thread but will throw Dane Conwell's from SP in the mix. Went on to play at WVU late 70's early 80's.
Also the rb from Oak Hill late 70's. Can't remember if it was Jon or Tim Williams (I believe he rushed for over 2000 yards his senior year.
