Well guys.....I hate to quote myself....BUT!

This thing should have been a done deal several weeks ago(and its nothing against Coach Hutch or the Kids....they deserve better). Its just that this administration continually seems to screw things up. They should have gotten this done a long time ago in figuring out that they couldn't spend the money on Phillips or Queen, but instead they dragged their feet. Bankrupt city and a school board and Administration that, by record, begs of apathy and the Good Ol' Boy Network. That is sad for their kids.

Good luck to Coach Hutchinson and the Rockets.

So, Hutchinson is the guy? Wasn't he on the staff last year? Anyone know if he has a staff put together or if anyone else from last year's staff will be joining him? It seems strange to me that a guy from the staff that didn't seem to be liked very well or supported by some of the fans will be brought in to head the troops.

Looks like the old, "we would be much better if, (insert name of asst here), was the head coach." Hope it all works out for you. Nelsonville needs some competition in the Ohio division. ;-)

Rumor now has it that a former long time Rocket grid boss has thrown his name back in the hat.

I have heard that several people would now be interested in this job. Maybe if Phillips would not have been prematurely named the HC on hear those guys could have thrown their names in the hat. Some of them are very highly qualified to say the least.

Why would people "all of a sudden" be interested in this job? The posting came down in mid-February if I remember correctly. This could've been solved a week or two ago if the Wellston BOE and Adminsitrative Staff would have spent a few more $$$ and had shown concern for the kids and community. So now it appears they got a coach for next to nothing and have set him up to fail. You can blast away all you want Wellston faithful. I work with a couple of people from Wellston. They are terrific, but they are also very disappointed in what has happened. If the coach named is who we all think it is, he is not ready for this job. Playing some college football, having 3 years or so assistant coaching experience, and "bleeding" blue and gold won't get the job done. Now, do I hope he is successful? YES! I can see Wellston and Vinton County fighting week 10 for victory number 1! If I am wrong, I will be on here in late October and say so. Just my opinion.

Blackjack, I am truly not trying to be negative. As I said, I work with two people from Wellston. Both are great workers and I consider them friends. They have told me good things about the coach in waiting. However, both have said he is in way over his head. Both are very very disappointed in the way the BOE handled this. I really hope the new coach is successful and proves me and any who doubt him totally wrong.

You know what this reminds me of Blackjack? I helped my neighbor finish some work he was doing in his basement (sheetrock, wiring, fixtures, etc) last year. I mean just a little help. I know nothing about building except what he had me do to help. I have been wanting to add to my garage for 2 years or so. My wife told me last week that I should just do the work instead of paying someone to do it. Could I save $$$? Oh yea . . . but who knows what my garage would look like! :) Wellston saved some money, but . . .

Hutch doesnt need me to get on here and argue any points. I think time will tell and I think you all will be surprised at how ready he is. All coaches had to start at some point, this is his time.In my opinion at the High school level you have to have the support of first and foremost the kids playing for you. Hutch has this going for him.
There is no doubt the schedule this year is brutal, that being said I see a successfull first year . I think he will get the most out of the talent he has ,and I think there is some talent on this team.
Good Luck Coach Hutch

Boilermaker, you are a faithful Wellston poster through thick and thin. I respect your passion for Wellston athletics. We are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I know you could care less what I think. I have no dog in this hunt. I hope Coach Hutchinson wins 10 games this year, but I think you are going to be surprized at how far off he is from being ready. Coaching high school sports is a tough tough business, especially football. Kids are told from the time they are in Pee Wee that their coach is an idiot and has no idea what he is doing. This happens all over the place. No place for a coach with little to no experience. My opinion :)

It sounds like there are some mixed opinions of the new coach and how the upcoming season will go. One thing is for sure . . . The schedule is tough, but is has been the last several years. Only time will tell. What are some names of the "old faces" being kicked around to join the staff. I have some ties to a few gentlemen who coached at Wellston years ago. Just wondered if it was any of them.

I'll be very interested to see who coach Hutchinson gets to be on his staff. Rocket50 old faces huh? Could you possibly be talking about Larry Blackstone? Good luck Chris. With that schedule you're gonna need it.

‘Hutch’ hired as new Wellston football coach

By PAUL BOGGS

Sports Editor

WELLSTON — Chris Hutchinson has always bled Blue and Gold.

Now, he’ll have the chance to lead the Golden Rocket colors on the gridiron.

That’s because the Wellston City Schools Board of Education hired the 28-year-old Hutchinson as the new Wellston High School head football coach on Wednesday night, approving the former Golden Rocket running back in a unanimous vote.

His hiring was the only item on the agenda at a special Board meeting, which lasted a mere three minutes.

Hutchinson starred at Wellston in the late 1990s, and has served as an assistant with the last two Rocket staffs of Heath Hinton and Jason Mantell.

“Hutch” — as he is casually referred to — succeeds Mantell, who resigned on Jan. 12.

He said he is “excited” about taking over as head coach, and deemed his hiring “really a dream come true.”

“It’s very special because it’s my home. It’s where I want to be and I don’t plan on going anywhere,” said Hutchinson in an interview following his hiring.

Hutchinson was expected to meet with his team today, and emphasized that “I am ready to get to work because we have a lot of work to do.”

“We have a lot of great kids here. I’ve been around them, we just need to get more of them (out playing). We just need to get to work and get things going,” he said.

Hutchinson’s hiring is somewhat late in the typical time frame for naming new football coaches.

“I think we were a little longer later on than what we wanted to be with this hire,” said Wellston BOE President Terry Gill.

However, having served as a varsity assistant for four years, he is familiar with his team and its offseason activities, which includes the winter weightlifting program.

Hutchinson is highly-regarded for his work ethic, which he developed as a player under then-Wellston head coach Larry Blackstone.

Blackstone believed heavily in weightlifting and offseason work, and Hutchinson said he is “big on the weight room.”

“We need to stay in the weight room and keep hitting the weight room,” he said. “I’ve been in there and feel like I have a good rapport with the kids.”

Hutchinson played from 1996 thru 1999, captured all-Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division and all-Southeast District honors, and rushed for over 3,000 yards in his decorated four-year Rocket career.

He played at Ohio University as well, before transferring to Morehead State, where he stood out at safety.

He returned to Wellston when Hinton was head coach, and served on Mantell’s staff for two years.

Hutchinson hesitated none when asked about the improvements the program must make in order to be successful.

Increased numbers is issue number one.

“The first thing we have to do is get more kids out,” he said. “We’ve had 35 or 40 kids the last few years. When I graduated here in 2000, we had 55 to 60 kids. We have to go recruit inside the school, and get kids out that need to be playing. I’d like to get 50 kids out this year.”

Indeed, numbers have dipped and leveled out at Wellston, as have victories.

After a winless season in 1995, the Rockets did not suffer another losing campaign until a winless on-the-field fall in 2007.

Sandwiched in between were the school’s two TVC-Ohio titles in 2001 and 2002, and two state playoff berths in 2004 and 2006.

While Wellston went 4-6 in 2008, it slipped to a disappointing 3-7 last year.

Hutchinson hopes to restore the Rockets as a regular challenger for the TVC-Ohio championship and playoff berths.

Wellston was a winner of games when it successfully ran the football, which is what Hutchinson has planned.

He has played in multiple offensive systems, including Blackstone’s wing-T and the former Ohio University option under then-head coach JimGrobe.

“We’re going to run the ball,” he said. “It’s going to be some wing-T, some I-formation, we’re also going to run some spread and single-wing type stuff. We’re going to bring some of the option game fromOU too, and run the quarterback a little bit.”

Hutchinson has assembled — and continues to do so — his staff, which will include Morgan Stevens, Travis Bethel, Scott Cooper and possibly Lance Phillips.

Phillips is the former Wellston star linebacker, who was a two-time Associated Press all-Southeast District Division IV Defensive Player of the Year.

Bethel is expected to help Hutchinson with the defense, which will feature fronts of “a 50 and 40” base.

“Travis (Bethel) is well-versed in the 40, and I like the slant-and-angle 50,” said Hutchinson. “And playing safety in the 4-3 (defense) atMorehead, that helped me a lot with coverage schemes.”

He coached the defensive backs and running backs under Hinton and Mantell.

But now, he leads all aspects of the Blue and Gold.

“I’m planning on building this program and leading this program, and hopefully, be very successful,” said Hutchinson.

Hutchinson was hired, according to Gill, from “a large pool of applicants and a lot of good candidates.”

Gill said a committee of eight individuals assisted in the process, including community members and former football players at Wellston.

One of the applicants was Oak Hill head coach Greg Phillips, who is from Wellston and coached there as an assistant in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Phillips ultimately turned the position down.

Another leading candidate was former Vinton County coach Matt Queen.

Hutchinson will be the eighth Wellston head coach in 20 seasons this fall.
