Yea im not doubting that ny is loaded but trimble has a few players back also .no doubt it will take a great game from trimble to go into boston field and leave with a win but they have done it before and i think this is one of them years they could do it again

Not really wanting to pick sides in this, but I work with some NY guys and for the first year ever im pulling for Trimble in this game because of the their cockiness. They think Buchtel invented football. So a question.... is 4-3 just Davey's record against Trimble as NY's coach. If im not mistaken he coached at Alex...If you include those years he might have a losing record against the Cats. Just sayin ;-)

Great article in the Messenger that mentioned some of the historical statistics. It did not mention that the Buckeyes are only 8 points away from scoring over 1000 points in the all-time series. Maybe we will see that in the post-game write-up! :)

Tomcats, Buckeyes set for annual showdown
By JASON ARKLEY Messenger staff writer | 0 comments

When it comes to backyard brawls, it doesn’t get any better in Athens County than the yearly showdown between Trimble and Nelsonville-York.

Separated by just a handful of miles on a twisty stretch highway in the north part of the county, the Buckeyes and Tomcats have met every season since 1970 for bragging rights between the tight-knit communities.

More times than not, it’s a knock-down, drag-out slugfest typified by hard hits, maximum effort and high drama. It’s inaccurate to say the two small-school programs hate one another — there is a mutual respect — but there’s no doubt there are no other teams on the schedule they’d rather beat.

“It’s Nelsonville-York and Trimble,” said N-Y head coach Dave Boston Jr. “You don’t have to say any more.”

Tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Boston Field, will be the 41st meeting between the rivals, with the Buckeyes holding a 26-12 (with two ties) edge in the series. Nelsonville-York won 11 straight meetings from 1990-2000, but other than that decade the rivalry has been everything you’d expect.

Close games. Controversial calls. Plays that will be remembered for years.

And in most cases, league and/or postseason implications will be on the line. Tonight will be no exception as both Trimble and N-Y are the early favorites to win their respective divisions of the Tri-Valley Conference (Hocking and Ohio Divisions respectively).

Both programs have long held the top dog spot in their leagues, and the two teams are the most prolific football playoff qualifiers in Athens County.

Even when one team or the other is supposed to be down or rebuilding, it doesn’t necessarily mean an easy time for the opponent.

Take for example last year. The Tomcats were supposed to be rebuilding after a fine 2008 campaign. The Buckeyes were thinking big.

The result was a 7-6 Buckeye victory that came about only after a fourth-quarter touchdown and made PAT kick.

Boston knows no matter the scenario, his team better show up ready to play — because he knows the Tomcats will.

“It doesn’t matter what the expectations are of the communities, when these kids put it on the field they’re both 10-0 teams going after each other. It’s a hell of a battle.

“Like last year. I know folks expected us to beat them up, and we almost lost it.”

On the field tonight, the Tomcats will hold the star power edge. Tailback Tyler Dyla, closing in on becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher, is a two-time all-state running back. Dyla’s speed, coupled with the fast artificial surface at Boston Field, could result is some big gainers.

But the Buckeyes have plenty of returners as well. Isaiah Andrews and Justin Cunningham anchor the middle of a defense that could be among the area’s best this season.

Both teams return experienced quarterbacks. Charles Kish and Justin Jewell return for Trimble; Nathan Dean is back for another year with the Buckeyes.

While it may be the biggest game of the week in Athens County, it’s just the first of several big ones for both programs. Trimble will face maybe its biggest in-league competitor next week in Wahama.

Nelsonville-York meanwhile, has a murderer’s row coming up that includes small-school state power houses in Columbus Bishop Ready and Newark Catholic.

Boston said his team’s opener will get them ready.

“You know what? Trimble is as good as those teams,” he said.

“I’m telling you right now, traditionally, and in this ballgame, they’re going to play us as well as any of those teams we’re going to face in weeks two, three, four and five.”

Nelsonville-York and Trimble is just one of four games inside the county tonight as the high school season kicks off. In The Plains, Athens opens the 2010 campaign against old SEOAL rival Gallia Academy. Down in Albany, Alexander — fresh off its first playoff appearance ever in 2009 — will take on Eastern. Federal Hocking meanwhile begins play by facing River Valley for the first time ever, in Stewart.

Time to end my silence on this one. Both are quality teams, I have friends in both communities, so picking a winner in this game is not easy.

Buckeyes are playing at Boston field, which gives them a slight advantage.

Tomcats bring back a ton of experience from last year, and nearly pulled off the upset, with Arnold in the backfield for NY.

This game is a toss-up, but I'm going with my intuition. Tomcats win by 2 points.

Sorry O&B, don't like picking against your Buckeyes, but I just kind of have a feeling that this may be the Tomcats year to make some real noise (barring injuries, of course).

Good luck to both schools tonight, I know both teams will leave it all on the field. Let's hope it is an injury free contest.

I'll be at Boston Field next week to see the Buckeyes take on the Green Wave.

N-Y should win but I agree with the King. Newark Catholic's playing about 5 minutes from the house tonight so I may swing over and watch it to see what the matchup should be like for next week. I believe my alma mater Wahama is visiting Trimble next week and NC is at N-Y so I might just have to watch a half of both games before heading back up the road.
