Re: D5 State Semis! Final 4! Coldwater vs. Wheelersburg
While doing a brief Google search to see the story about our upcoming game, I found your forum, so I thought I'd jump in and share some thoughts from the other side for you all. First, I have nothing but love for Southeast Ohio; I went to college down there and it's God's country as far as I'm concerned.
As for what have the hot topics in what you all have discussed, remember, we are very experienced playoff attendees, so here are some things I've learned from experience. First, it truly does not matter what side of the field you're assigned to in the playoffs; realize there are a hell of a lot of other schools who would play in the middle of a cow pasture to be playing in November. Unless you travel more than your entire town, there is plenty of seating in Xenia. Coldwater has been the visitors 2 weeks in a row, and we out-traveled the other team each time. It ESPECIALLY doesn't matter once you get to the finals, unless you're planning on bringing 50,000 fans. Could it be a slap in the face from the OHSAA that you're not the home team? Maybe, or maybe that's just not how it worked out. It took a long time and several state titles by our conference before the OHSAA gave West Central Ohio any respect.
I saw several touch on strength of schedule, the edge here has to go to Coldwater. Coldwater's conference is perenially the strongest in the state. The MAC has 28 state football titles since 1973, with most of those coming after 2000. Our county has 3 teams still playing this week. http://www.midwestathleticconference.co ... te-titles/
As far as Coldwater's style, they do appear to be a mirror of Wheelersburg. I hate to contradict whomever posted it, but we have more than 5 tools on offense. Players to watch are #19 Post (RB/LB) #4 Schoenherr (WR/RB/LB) #2 Kyle McKibben (WR/CB/K) #1 Harlamert (WR/CB) and #10 Hemmelgarn (QB). Our starting defense only gave up 6 first half points all regular season and just 2 touchdowns in the playoffs. They tend to be fast, and more importantly, patient and won't be fooled on many fakes or play action plays. On offense, we are not one dimensional, you will see a mixture of spread passes, option and smashmouth runs, along with a string of misdirection plays that have been effective all year. Our QB is very accurate and if he gets it within ten feet of him, #1 is going to bring it down.
Coldwater's biggest defensive weakness might be the straight ahead run, but most teams are too impatient to use it on us. In the playoffs so far, teams have ground out a couple first downs, and punted, then we score and they throw their game plan out the window.
We don't usually get out-coached, out-hustled, or out-conditioned.
I'd look for a knock down drag out type game, much like we saw when we played in baseball a few years ago. Let's hope everyone brings their support for their team, along with their sportsmanship on Friday night. We've seen a sad lacking of both this year.
I wish everyone a safe trip on Friday, best of luck for a good, injury-free game to both teams, watch out for our antlered friends on the roads out there. Go Cavs.

Great to have you by. Nothing but respect for coldwater. Burg will be your toughest opponent to date. Burg can pound the ball and spread it out. Both defenses are great. The key to this game for burg is to shorten the game and make the cavs play from behind. They won't be intimidated by coldwaters success.

There's no guarantee who are the best 2 teams. Any of the 4 can pull it off. It's just like a chess match.Tribal Force wrote:Nobody said that except you
Just would make more sense to put the two best teams in the final. This will be the State Championship game. Coldwater could have the same complaint. It don't really matter. You have to go thru Coldwater to win state.
Exciting stuff! Thanks to burg coaches & boys for getting them there. Once that happens, all else just follow & pound the bleachers.

I would wait til the game is over before I made a claim like that; even then, I'd let Coldwater say who their toughest opponent to date would be. Marion Local has won 4 consecutive state titles, going for #5. ML battled CW to the very end with CW kicking a 43FG to win... ML is proven.
Re: D5 State Semis! Final 4! Coldwater vs. Wheelersburg
Thanks for the input CWVoice. This is guaranteed to be a great game. Two well-coached and well-conditioned teams, with multiple game-changing players on both sides of the ball. Two teams that finished the regular season in D5 as #1 and #2.
The Burg offense scores 40 points a game and Burg first-team defense gives up 5 points per game. I know CW has similar stats. Burg has beaten 5 teams that made the playoffs this year (with the D3 Jackson team just losing in the Regional Finals.)
Looking for a game that we will all remember. Be safe to you and your fans. GO BURG!

Marion local is definitely one of the top 7 teams in the state.

I thought the very same thing about marion local after looking at joe eitel. I'd be curious to see what coldwater posters think after the game how the 2 compared.i expect 2 hard working classy programs to take the field though. I do have to disagree somewhat with CW about seating. ironton has been doing this for 40 years. and I've seen some very distinct differences. hopefully it's not an issue but the state has to anticipate enourmous crowds for games like this.frankly though as an ironton fan I wish I was complaining on behalf of my own team. travel wise seems good. just concerned about seating. one thing is for sure.and handicap accessability. like the CW poster said, you get past this one seating will never be an issue. and it is centrally located for anyone at the shoe, as it should be.as well as being available to view on tv for people who just can't be there. I'd love to go see the finals again in the shoe. my health just keeps me from most travel.

Burg is hands down the best football team in southern Ohio.
Coldwater is well...... Coldwater
I expect burg to give nothing less than their very best in this game. I honestly believe that burg can win this game. No penalties, no turnovers, and they will have to control the clock.
This is a big moment in these young people's lives so I hope they win, because if they do they will win in the Shoe week 15.
This game should be an epic slugfest.

Followed a ton of burg teams in the past. This team is state good. I believe they win this game. ML is proven but Burg is just as proven this year, but you're right, we will wait and see if Coldwater fans see it that way. Fair enough.kodeman419 wrote:wobycat wrote:Great to have you by. Bad thing is, we are judging your team by videos. Nobody has actually watched Coldwater so when we point out players it's just which ones stood out on the particular views. I know the team is loaded with talent and I can't wait to see this meeting. I believe in the next 5 years we will see each other a few more times, if we don't restructure.
Both teams will be VERY well prepared. Wheelersburg is VERY Deep and has the best coaching staff in the area.
Coldwater is very well respected and I hope Wheelersburg comes up and shows em we can play football too!

Anyone who can get movies on demand, look for a 2012 movie called: Touchback. It's about Coldwater football and stars Kurt Russell.

It's fictional but based on Coldwaters program, town, and commuity. Good movie.
