I think this is a very closely matched contest. I think one thing being left out in the discussion is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. I do not see Logan losing a close matchup at home. Unless, they allow Homecoming festivities to distract them. On a neutral field, coin toss, but I will take Logan at home. Good luck to both teams!

It would be hard for me to say Logan is better anywhere at this point, but I think Logan has potential to be good in all 3 areas.

As for your question, I'd break offense down this way:

RUSHING: Edge to Gallipolis. Their wing-t offense has piled up the yards and Austin Wilson has been nearly unstoppable from his wingback spot. Ethan Moore has proven to be a productive runner from quarterback. Jared Golden may make a return at some point which would only add to the Blue Devils strength.

Logan is down to their 2nd string tailback, and a sophomore at that. I think McCarty has run the ball well and is a shifty runner, but he is still a sophomore. Cavinee and Jurgensmier have been reliable runners all year out of the spread.

EDGE: Gallipolis

PASSING: Logan looks to throw more and will spread the field with 3 and 4 receivers and also have reliable pass catchers out of the backfield. Jurgensmier throws the ball well, but sometimes locks on to a target and forces throws. Still, with Lindsey and Cavinee out wide I like Logan's passing game.

However, Moore has proven to be a good passer for Gallipolis and very efficient. Again Wilson is a top threat.

EDGE: Logan

UP FRONT: Hard to know much about either. Both teams have struggled against good competition. Gallipolis has been better against the rest of the schedule, so edge to the Blue Devils. Logan is likely to be without LG Nathan Chandler again on Friday while the blue and white are healthy.

EDGE: Gallipolis

As for Defense:

RUN DEFENSE: Neither team has been dominant on the defensive side of the football. Against the one common opponent, Marietta, Logan shut out the Tigers and held their wing-t offense to 3.5 yards per carry and 186 yards. Gallipolis allowed 21 points and 6.6 yards per carry and 250 yards.

But I'm not sure how much you can use common opponents for much.

EDGE: Even

PASS DEFENSE: Gallipolis is allowing opponents to complete 55% of their passes for 555 yards and 5 touchdowns and have recorded 2 sacks and 2 interceptions.

Logan is allowing opponents to complete 56% of their passes for 411 yards and 8 touchdowns while recording 3 sacks and 2 interceptions.

EDGE: Slightly to Gallipolis for holding teams out of the endzone.

And as for special teams:

PLACE KICKING: Edge here to Logan. Derek Montgomery has 10 career field goals in 12 attempts and is 53-58 for PATS in his career. Hannon for Gallipolis is very reliable on PATs but doesn't have the track record of making 3-pointers.

EDGE: Logan

PUNTING: Moore is averaging 33.4 yards per kick with one blocked. Montgomery is averaging 35 per kick with one blocked.

EDGE: Even.

RETURN GAME: Wilson is averaging 21.83 yards per kick return (on 6 returns) and 23.33 yards per punt return (on 3 returns). For Logan, Lindsey is the top returner with an 18.1 yard average on kick off returns (12 returns) and Logan has no significant punt returner.

EDGE: Gallipolis

At home with a win under their belts I see the Chiefs continuing on in the victory column. Chiefs by 7.

4ever -

That's why I mentioned I don't put much stock in "Common Opponents" - but that's also what makes this game so hard to compare, I think both teams have played very different schedules. I'm not saying Logan would be a whole lot better than 1-4, I haven't seen enough out of the Chiefs to say that yet, but I also think Gallipolis would have struggled against the competition Logan has played.

Should be a great game. I hope the Chiefs keep improving - if that happens they can compete.

I note Logan has 23 seniors which is a huge senior class for this area. GAHS has 12, which is slightly larger than the 8 we had last year.[/quote]

23 Seniors with very little Friday night playing time except for a couple of them.

GAHS -

Jackson is a lot better than most people think. Everyone is caught up with their week 1 debacle and ignoring the last two weeks.

They have as good of an offense as they have had in a LONG time, I'm talking more like 1996-1997 with Shane Wolford IMO. Defensively I think they have some question marks still.

But that doesn't excuse the fact that Logan has to keep getting better defensively. Players missing tackles and taking bad angles at this point in the season are unacceptable for a championship team. I didn't see the Marietta game, obviously some improvements were made, hopefully that trend continues.

That's a big statement. Those teams in 96-97 are probably some of the best in Jackson history. Ironically, I believe it was the 97 team that dropped an early game to Vinton County, and then went on to a 9-1 SEOAL championship season. Very similar to what is going on so far this season in Jackson.

I didn't meant to imply that the offense was THAT good, but I meant to say that they are better than every offense since then - obviously they were very good in 2003 and 2004 with Jared Humphreys, but I'm not sure they had the depth of skill players they do now.

i think we can all agree these teams have already played teams or team much better than what they have to face the rest of the year  the pressure is on both logan and gahs to not lose. its to the point any given friday can bite ya in the hind parts if you fail to take care of business. with that said i dont think anyone is a heavy favorite but cannot afford a let down  ;-)

Logan will play tough at home. Gallia needs to keep the mistake level way down and they can come out with the "W". If Logan gets some turnovers, look out. THis game could be the pick-um of the week. Good luck to both.
