NY takes out Vikings, 42-6

McARTHUR — This one had “trap game” written all over it.

Not that many observers felt that a traditional power such as Nelsonville-York would actually lose in this contest against a young Vinton County Vikings team, but with a huge showdown against the Alexander Spartans looming next week, Buckeyes coach Dave Boston Jr. even admitted that his team wasn’t as focused as it needed to be Friday night.

“We knew before the game that our kids weren’t mentally ready to play this football game, and that’s not to take away from Vinton County,” said Boston.

After a sluggish first half in which they were up only 14-6, whatever fire and brimstone speech Boston gave his troops in the halftime locker room worked, as the Buckeyes (6-2) scored 28 unanswered points to win on the road 42-6.

“At halftime, we told our kids that we need to play like Buckeyes play, and that’s getting to the football, flying around the field, making things happen defensively, and our kids figured it out,” said Boston.

In that uneven first half for the normally dominant Buckeyes, the Vikings took the first drive of the game and turned it into six points. The 16-play drive ended when Adam Ward scrambled in from one yard out. The failed two-point conversion kept the score at 6-0 with 5:18 to play in the first quarter.

Nelsonville-York responded to tie the game up when Justin Cunningham’s five-yard touchdown run dented scoreboard.

The extra point failed, keeping the affair deadlocked.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings fumbled, and when it appeared they were going to be in big trouble, the Vikes immediately picked off a Nathan Dean pass to get the ball back.

After Vinton County failed to capitalize near the Buckeye goal line on a long drive, the visitors made them pay. Dustin Young, on the first play from scrimmage deep in Nelsonville-York territory, busted out a 75-yard run to set things up nicely for a Cunningham 16-yard touchdown run. The try for the two-point conversion was good, giving the Buckeyes a 14-6 lead.

A few other good chances for the Buckeyes to build on the lead went by the wayside, though, as Ward picked off a pass to close the half when Nelsonville-York was threatening inside the 10-yard line.

The Vinton County faithful had to have felt good about that first-half performance, but it was all Nelsonville-York in the second.

Cunningham capped off the first drive of the second half with a seven-yard touchdown run, and the extra point made it 21-6. It was a drive that featured lots of power running, as the Buckeyes imposed their will.

Vinton County was able to move the ball, even in that struggle of a second stanza, but costly turnovers against a team like Nelsonville-York are a recipe for disaster.

Also in the onslaught were two Nathan Dean touchdown passes late in the game, as the Buckeyes built up their lead, and were able to rest their starters late in an attempt to get ready for the Spartans.

Alexander and Nelsonville-York are both 3-0 in TVC play. With just two weeks left, the winner is guaranteed to capture at least a piece of the TVC regular season championship.

Even with a 36-point margin of victory, Boston knows that plenty of work lies ahead, as the mistakes his team made Friday could spell disaster next week if not corrected.

“We’ve got to improve on this week’s performance. We just can’t make those big mistakes up front and on our ends. I think that our football team will be more than ready for these next two weeks,” he said.

Vinton County (1-7, 0-3 in TVC play) will host Meigs in its final home game of the 2010 season next Friday.

Give me a break people. NY played a great second half and deserved to win the game. But to say VC is lucky it was only 14-6 at half is a joke. As hard as it is to admit, VC played equal to if not better than the unbeatable buckeyes in he first half. Don't give me this we were looking ahead crap because part of the game of football is being mentally prepared each and every week. VC had the ball in the red zone twice in the first half and scored once. NY had it in the red zone 4 times scoring twice. NY had one turnover on downs and threw one interception. VC turnednit over on downs in its failed red zone attempt.

I just don't understand why its so hard for people to admit that an undermatched team played its guts out and had NY rattled for a half. Give them credit. Good effort Vikings...and good luck against Meigs.

This was my first Vinton County game of the year. It was good to get back and see some old friends. As for the game, just like his father, I thought Coach Boston ran up the score a bit. The last two touchdowns were pass plays, the last coming at the 5 minute mark in the game, with the game well in hand at 35-6. Back in the days when I played the Old Man was noted for running up scores on clearly inferior opponents. After all, it is the score and the box score that are remember most. Good luck to the young Vikings and the new coaching staff the rest of the way.

I realize that this is a football forum. But I seem to remember everything being BASSACKWARDS last basketball season. NY fans on the other side of this, TWICE. NY has the advantage in football, usually does. But, what will the NY posts be like in B-ball. Take your 1 win a year against us in football. Your boys deserve it. We will take our 2 wins in B-ball and let you guys do the crying this winter. See you at the games, I will be the one with the towel in case you need it to wipe your tears then. Mine will be all dried up by then.
