2011 Marietta Tigers
Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
GW, I understand what you mean in your point that they have nothing to lose, but as a athlete who in high school, didn't take part in the football program, I just think it shows the lack of concern he has for the students and athletes at MHS. Because a young lady does cross country or young man takes part in the tennis team or whatever.. does that mean that they should be spending their time helping or taking part in the football teams work.... I'd like to see how he would react if the golf coach or tennis coach said that his athletes should spend their time helping that program. These young kids are signing up to play the sports they choose, they have their own things to do, socially, jobs or hey how about school work, something I believe would benefit the students at a school that's being watched by the state for poor test scores, should be encouraged to do.
They had, according to their website, roughly 30 non freshman participants last year, which does need improved, no doubt about it but they have to, like everyother respectable program and what Tigers staff claimed to be doing last year, attract other students to the program by respecting them, challenging them and helping them PERFORM on the field.
Fly by night coaches and a shady new coach... Sounds like a program growing quite shady itself.

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
Good luck Farnsworth. I'm glad he got a job non-football. This site is full of people with all the answers. I wonder if the people that know all things on here know that's a grant based job? It may be there next year may not. All grant money. Other schools in wood county got the chance to hire for this position. Some of those schoos only get this person half a day. So I don't think he lied. He took a job with the idea he gets one more year with a salary then he can leave with his wife or stay. He never said he was giving up working just coaching. If he works williamstowns sideline next season then jump him. Till then.
I think this seasons tigers will be able to hang in there games. I don't see blowouts in there future. They kept most of the games close last season. This makes them hard to handle. A few got away late but they are giving it all they have. I'm still cheering tigers. I don't care who is calling the shots!!! This game is for the kids. I'm cheering for them none of the coaches. The coaches will be fine, they will do better with support!!!!

Snowman,
I appreciate you explaining your opinion. The "every athlete involved" was not a direct quote, it was the reporter's take on his conversation with Coach Springer. Perhaps "support of every athlete" would have been a better choice of words. I don't know because it was not my interview.
I have no dog in this fight. I was just setting the record straight on what happened at FH. I consider Bob Springer a friend and a good coach. He's not perfect, nor am I.
I think Coach Springer will do a good job at Marietta and like any coach, he will do even better with the support of the community. If you don't know Springer, get to know him and make up your own mind.

Lookit......facts are facts.....jerry springer does the same things over and over no matter where he goes. Kids stop playing, good coaches get ran off, and the program is usually worse when he leaves than when he came. He did this at South, belpre, fed hock, and the springerdeal is currently underway in marietta. 3-7 will seem like a championship soon.

Hopefully he wont jump ship on them like he has done at other places. Come in, stir the he-- out of the pot, then claim an illness or whatever and skate out of town. Good luck Tigers.

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
I can understand why Farnsworth left MHS. He filled in 1 year at PHS and took the team to a state title. Didn't get the job the next year because many felt he really didn't do much as the interm HC. Left PHS and got another HC elswhere to gain experience. Came back to the area and applied for almost every coaching job in the valley, including the PHS job which was what he desired. PHS wouldn't hire him because they had an inside man that wanted the job. Craig took the Marietta job, again for more experience as a HC.
Craig being a Parkersburg man, that is where he wants to be. A job opened in the Wood County system and now he has his foot in the door when 1 of 3 football jobs will open in the not 2to distant future, South, PHS or Williamstown. He is a virtual lock, which his past experience, to get a HC job in the Wood County system.
Marietta, like many SE Ohio schools, have to hire outsiders to come in and coach because these schools have to cut their budgets and can't hire a teacher/coach because of the lack of teacher openings. This causes high turnover as these coaches move around and it also gives reason for BOEs to change coaches quicker when these coaches aren't as successful as some think they should be.
The carousel of coaches coming and going, due to the lack of teaching openings in SE Ohio, is something folks should get used to because it will be happening more at other schools in the future. JMHO
Best of luck to the Tigers and staff in the ECOL.

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
Mister B - in most cases you are you correct, but I will bust up your theory on the Marietta job. Marietta had a teacher in the system, that has been in the system for 13-14 years, that wanted the job. I will leave it at that. You can get the rest of the story from somewhere else.Mister B wrote:Marietta, like many SE Ohio schools, have to hire outsiders to come in and coach because these schools have to cut their budgets and can't hire a teacher/coach because of the lack of teacher openings.
Yes is does matter. Springer is a Joke. At Fed. Hock, he escorted out because of his coaching and his mouth. And if Dedder was so happy at TE, then play him there this year. We will see how happy he will be!!! I thought Dedder was going to ST. Marys??????LOL
Dedder's staying in marietta, and he will play where ever he is needed to play. He cares more about winning then playing the position that he wants to.

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
The only place I've seen/heard negative comments about Springer are one this board. He was in charge of the freshmen last year and parents and players had a great time and season. The negative comments are from people that didn't have a kid talented enough to be the star where Springer has coached, it seems. Springer really likes kids and the kids enjoy him- everywhere he's been. Sure, there are always a few that don't- that's never 100%. Springer will be good for the kids, he's also been able to keep most of the staff intact. Numbers will still be a problem.
Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
Mister B,
Craig Farnsworth has only ben a head coach at 2 schools:
Parkersburg in 2001
Marietta in 2010
He was a assistant coach in between those 2 schools.
He should have been the head coach at Parkersburg in 2002, but wasn't really even given a chance to get that job on a full time bases.
He left the area, coached at Musselman and then several schools in the Carolinas, came back to Parkersburg for a interview for the job and was messed over again.

Ed,
My sources tell me that if PHS doesn't advance in the playoffs that the job may be open in 2012. The AD and HC aren't seeing eye to eye on some things. Do you know if there is any fact to that?

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
I talk to both alot, and haven't heard that one yet.
If they are clashing, I haven't seen it or heard it from either side.
I know Don Reeves (HC) eats, sleeps, and loves Big Reds Sports.
I also know Lori (AD) eats, sleeps, and also loves Big Reds sports.
both want the same things,
teams that are competive
show a lot of class, both on and off the field.
Parkersburg people were split over either Don or Craig, some families were even split between the two.
Don knows this even though we are friends, I wanted Craig with Don as one of his assitants.
Can Reeves get the job done, YES
The bigger question is will the job get done before the big time boosters start calling for his head.
One thing to remember,
Football in Big Reds Nation isn't a Sport;
Its a RELIGION!!

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
schenk11- wasn't that coach on the staff that led Marietta to 1-9 and twenty-some players. All of those coaches were asked to not come back, were they not?
Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
Farnsworth asked people who were on Andy Schob's staff to coach with him the year after the 1-9 season.
Nice jab though!
He was also on the staff the year Marietta went 7-3, and the year they went 8-3 including a playoff birth.
I was simply responding to Mr. B's comment
No need to take a shot at the guy.
OBTW - Springer worked real hard to try and woo him and get him on his staff... why would Springer want to hire him if he is such a terrible coach?

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
schenk11...
my point is that Marietta doesn't have the necessary openings to hire teachers that coach certain sports. Didn't they cut 9 teaching positions for next year this spring? What openings do they have for this coming year? Was there a position open last year that Farnsworth was qualified for when he applied?
Schools that are in the cutting mode, and that would be the vast majority of SE Ohio schools including Marietta, simply can't go out and hire a coach who teaches because either a position isn't open or they can't create a teaching position due to the lack of funds.
Just because they have a teacher on staff the wants to be the coach doesn't mean they are qualified or the powers to be view them as qualified. Just because one is a teacher doesn't mean they can coach. And no, I don't know who the aforementioned individual is that you refered to.
Until evidence is provided otherwise, I have my doubts that Marietta has any teaching openings available that most successful football coaches could apply for.
I wish Marietta nothing but the best this coming season.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought he got a HC job in South Carolina.edforshey wrote:Mister B,

If the Wood County BOE is smart, they will employ him as a HC in football at the next available opening. I am sure he would want to be a Big Red again if given the chance. He would do well at any of their 3 HS.

I don't know who the guy is that you're talking about either. I just remember the fact that Schob was told that the assistants couldn't return. That scenario groups them all together, maybe unfairly. You're right, Farnsworth talked to some of the former staff about coaching but according to him they all wanted to be coordinators in systems that they didn't know. They were more concerned about their titles than just coaching.

Re: 2011 Marietta Tigers
Tigerstrike2011, I'm not sure how much info is out there or supposed to be out there. I'll say public, this is firsthand knowledge not what someone told me or what I heard, not all the coaches from that staff were asked to leave. Just starting at the lower level the middle school staff still has some of the same guys. Great coaches some even came back this year that left for job reason that schob hired then. There is one coach that chose to "watch", for family reasons, has been asked re-pededly to return since he left when Andy did. I myself left the staff with Andy with a personal endorsement from the AD that he would make sure the new coach which was Farnsworth, was made aware I should be kept on staff if Craig saw fit and if I wanted to stay. After a wonderful season at Warren with Coach Schob I made a choice to return to Marietta. I was rehired by Craig, after his choice to leave, hired by Coach Springer.
Other coaches that have been away are starting to resurface around the tiger program. The coaches that u think were asked to not return were all wonderful men and better Coaches. As far as the titles they wanted or did not want, there is no way I would interview for a coaching job and not lay on the table what I was interested in, or what I thought I was capable of. Before Coach Schob made his final choice to leave the board made him one last offer, I'm sorry if I'm not supposed to say this but the staff as Andy wanted it was to stay intact. In my opinion the damage was done. Coach schob is a wonderful coach and person. Craig was great and the kids loved him. Now its Coach Springer is in charge. He and his staff are excited and starting with furious enthusiasm. The kid’s love bob as well, no matter what his critics say on here. The man is the Coach, let us figure out if he is poor or not.
I chose to be positive, I want the team of 2011 to be successful and be positive. Win lose or draw. Stop taking shots at Andy, schenk, bob,Craig,Darren,Santa, tooth fairy ect. This topic should be about how deter will help the team with his tenacity and fight, how great of an athlete he is, not whether or not he is happy playing guard. It should be can the line this year make holes for the backs, can the linebackers make plays to stop the run game of the opponents. Come on, the coaches this season, past seasons, next season will coach for the kids. That's it. I’ll make this the last statement I make, I want to thank all the coaches, ever, that has put their time in on the football field at Marietta. If you want to slam coaches and players you’re very immature. I've done it, but I grew up. Let's all try it.
