Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Newsome started coaching at Portsmouth in 1999, with the offensive line and defensive tackles. He has coached 3 years under Bubba Hickman prior to Hickman’s departure to South Carolina. He then took over duties as the main offensive line coach for the Trojans. He has also served as freshman basketball.
He graduated from PHS in 1986, earning 3 letters in football and 2 in basketball. He played for Coach Shaffer on the Trojan football team where they completed a 10-2 season in 1984.
He is also a graduate of Toledo where he earned 3 letters on the Rockets football team, and helped the Rockets win the 1990 MAC Champion Ship under Coach Nick Saban ( yeah that Nick Saban).
I wonder what kind of system Newsome would run. His first several years at Portsmouth he coached in a run first offense built on strong athletic linemen and fast backs. The last few he has coached in Clifford’s shot gun spread look, that has also been successful, when they have had the athletes. I would assume he would run something similar to PHS in his first few years as I believe it fits West well.
I think Ted would make a fine coach, and if he doesn’t leave for the West Side I think he would be the front runner for the PHS job when Clifford retires. Newsome’s ties run deep at Portsmouth, as his wife is also a teacher in the district and the varsity cheerleading adviser, and his father in-law is the Trojans long time P.A. announcer, and former booster’s club president. Would he leave West to come back to PHS if offered when Clifford retires?

Coach Crabtree!?!?!? Why in the world would he do that?? Has a great team coming back and isnt his son going to be a senior? Valley has more talent this year coming back than West. That is nuts, no way do I see him leaving the home town

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I heard Crabtree applied as well, and it came from a very reliable source. I'm just glad that the weight room is staying active during this hiring process.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Coach Shaffer, Swords, and Carver have done a nice job keeping the boys in the weight room, but obviously the morale would be much higher if the kids knew who the head coach is...I know from the experience of going through several coaching changes during my high school career that players are less motiavated when they don't have a coach

Wonder if the people of Lucasville are scratching their heads on why he would apply? Like I said earlier, I don't see him leaving Valley.

If he did put in for the job, why would he not accept it if offered?
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Ron Hinton was at Amanda Clearcreek for almost 30 years and won a lot more than Crabtree has and we still got him to come to Chilly! Anything can happen!

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I don't think you got him to come to chilli as much as he was ready to leave AC. Have you heard of the financial situation AC is in? Unbelievable!
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Maybe Crabtree sees the same situation developing at Valley. Just saying that anything can happen in coaching today!
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I don't see Darren leaving Valley, but he has to do what is best for him and his family. Rolfe isn't going anywhere. His son will be an 8th grader and I would bet Scott is the front runner for the Valley Basketball Job.
I know (from the most reliable source) that Ron Hinton interviewed for the West job as well.

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Your source is wrong. It is Ron's nephew, Heath that interviewed.

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I'm hearing that the Arkansas applicant is a front runner for the position.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Arkansas is a long way for an interview :122245 I guess phone interview first, then face to face if interest is there. May explain it taking a while.
I heard he played at Waverly and is looking to come home.

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
coach crabtree did apply, after learning of assistants being let go without being notified, but then turned down any phone calls saying that he was no longer interested... apperently he was jus fristrated with the school but has said that he wouldn't be leaving valley for a very long time...
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I have heard shaffer will get the job from a few different people. I wouldn't be shocked, he's knowledgable, he's been a principal and a coach, knows the ins and outs of the school system, and more importantly the kids like him and trust him. The only knock on him is age but I could see him being here for at least 5 more years.
