GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
Re: GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
I don't know if it is the worlds greatest offense. I personally don't believe anyone offense is that much better then anything else. If you don't block and open holes and if you can't catch passes then your scheme doesn't really matter. I really haven't been a member of these forums for more then last year. And ever since i have been here people have just blasted this offensive scheme and i just thought maybe there was a reason why? i didn't know. I also thought maybe you or the other people could tell me something maybe you thought they could run that would work better for them.
Look maybe they could change schemes and they would become an offensive machine, but what scheme would it be? the pistol? the spread? power I? Look at what this team has done since Gallia Academy started varsity soccer program even before coach Eddy took over. With the exception of 2010. They have lacked skilled people maybe that is why this offense does not work for them. Because it is not a great offense to feature one athlete. It works best with multiple ones. My only point is i think they would of struggled offensively most of those years under any scheme.
I think they are beginning to see a change here because now they do not have kids coming in learning midget football and junior high then part of them leaving to go play soccer and were left with a hole. Now that they have continuing soccer program and continuing football there are more opportunities and they will begin to see the level of skill players elevate again.

Your asking a lot of good questions 83 and I don't have many of the answers.... You bring up the past, which some people would like to forget, under our past coaching regime we ran a spread offense & had a reasonable amount of success... We won a couple of league titles and had a good record of making the play-offs... That is indisputable... Maybe if we would have ran the spread the past couple of years we would have had more success... My critics would point out that we didn't have the talent to run the spread.. I would counter with the belief the talent was there we just had them in the wrong positions.. There is no way to prove or disprove this... So saying what would have worked better is an impossible task... Also when Eddy took over he replaced the entire coaching staff, we lost a lot of experienced & talented coaches. I have no problem with the coaches but when Eddy stated running the wing-tee he had to teach the players and the coaches this new system.. Now we are changing offensive coordinators, wonder how much experience he has with the wing-tee...
Not sure what your point was about soccer???? I just don't believe football suffered because we started a soccer program.. If we drop the soccer program would more boys switch over to football?? Who knows for sure... I am a realist and accept the fact that Gallia will probably never be a top program in the state... But I just get tired of going to games and watching us loose to inferior teams that we should beat..

Superblue i could be wrong but i think the last of those playoff and league titles came the last year before soccer started. My only 2 points about soccer was. they used to have a lot of kids that played soccer in youth sports when there was no soccer for them at junior high level, i am sure most of them played a fall sport and they did not run cross country. In 2007 and 2008 when there was no junior high soccer i am sure there are boys that played junior high football and then choose soccer over football. When i go to soccer game not often when you see the speed and athleticism on the field. i see some quickness that would great in any offense or defensive backfield. I think it hurt. And where i think it really hurt was a few kids that may of set behind someone in junior high didn't like it or get the chance to develop and may have left football. I think now they are seeing. That the 2 programs junior high soccer and football have kids competing in it and growing and developing in their sport. Especially last year there were 20 some seventh graders that played and 20 some eight graders in football that is more then in a long time.
Look their may be nothing to it. But i don't think the coaching staff the won all the titles in the early 2000's all of a sudden got stupid or didn't know how to coach something changed. The only common link i came up with was soccer. That is what my son played before he switched to football last fall.
I am glad you clarified the offense thing for me. I had heard people mention the spread but guess i didn't realize that is what devils ran in early and mid 2000's makes sense to me now. Now i think if don't see a lot of offensive development this year, then i think your point is more valid. Because these kids are going to have been in this system for 4 years. Not much room for excuses.
I really hope it works for them though. It is my understanding both the junior high seventh and eight grade teams switched to wing-t last year and it is my understanding that basically all the midget league kids will begin to use it this year. So in coming years we could have kids with 8 years of experience in this offense by the time they are seniors. if this does not work and we have to change philosophy's, it will be a lot of work to be redone.
The biggest weakness i have scene in our wing-t is you have to be able to throw the ball for the wing-t to really work and we have not done a great job of developing that part of the offense. It allows people to really load up on that and any offense is hard to run with 10 or 11 guys playing run.

Well 83 I believe we have beat this dead horse wing-tee issue long enough...LOL....You made some good points. Football season will be here before we know it and hopefully things will work out and Gallia can get back on track and become a top program in Southern Ohio... I am sure we all hope this happens....
Re: GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
My son graduated this spring and said the thing that he was really disappointed not to get to go to camp with the team. He said it was by far the best part of the summer program. It was an incredible bonding experience with their teammates.
As far as the offense goes, I heard through the grapevine that we're basically running the same offense as last year. However, we'll be running more packages off the basic plays. That sounds like a fantastic thing to me. In order to be successful, you need to have several plays that start off looking the same, but doing different things. For example, each base running play should have some combination of a counter, reverse, play action, boot, trap, keep, option, etc. Just because the playbook is a lot thicker doesn't mean that the offense is substantially more complex. Most offenses have 6 or 8 base running plays with 4 or 5 plays that are run off the fake of the base play.
My son said that several times last year, they practiced some of these things during a game week in preparation for an opponent, but then never used them in the games. It sounds to me like we'll be more difficult to predict this year, but run the same offense. I'm not a big fan of the Wing-T/Single Wing offense, but it really doesn't matter what you run as long as you can execute and not be predictable. It was amazing to me last year how often you could stand on the sidelines knowing the down and distance and then look at the formation and know exactly what play we were going to run. If fans/parents can do that, you know that the better opposing coaches can as well. I'm cautiously optimistic that won't be the case this year.

Re: GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
just one last word on playbook and i will be done after talking to my son. The playbook has a new section probably 20 pages or so that has nothing to do with football plays. It is more of a team handbook and talks about being leaders and developing leadership that was not there last year. Then he says the actual playbook itself is just not as cramped in. They did not just jam everything on one page that they could fit on it so it is maybe a little more organized. As far as the actual plays. I can tell you something have changed because on those pages it says this is different from past years because of x or y or that this is new. so there are some changes also.

Re: GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
You can win with any O, as long as you execute it better than the Defense executes there plan! The trick is being flexible when you are doing your game plan. If you are playing a D that is tough up the middle and you like to run up the middle, then maybe try and run outside........ You also have to be flexible during a game. I like to see teams run a multiple O so they have a few options when it comes to making adjustments. The Wing T is a great O and once it is implemented from the youth level up and you get the kids in the system for a few years it will be even better. Teams throw the ball because most coaches run a 50 or 4-4 D, and spend all there time setting up to stop the run, that when they play a good pass happy team they struggle. The old adage still stands the test of time......"Offense brings crowds, Defense wins games" I would love to see more teams in Ohio run a 4-3 or even a 3-4
You can run any O you want but if your not stopping the other team from scoring, you are gonna have trouble winning very many games!
It's easy to teach a kid to run out and catch the ball. Even if he is a bad route runner the QB can adjust, It is very hard to teach a kid to defend the pass. If a DB gets just a little out of position he gets burnt!

I don't care what type of offense or defense GAHS runs, as long as the coaches put the kids in positions to excell.

Well said!
I don't believe it is about Jimmy's and Joe's anymore. The wing-tee is a thing of beauty when it is executed properly. The boys will deliver the victories this fall.
Work hard, stay healthy, enjoy your summer!

Rule sheets were given with the rules for the players individual position but that was one piece of paper this is the first year for playbooks.

Re: GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
Well like i said i didn't look at my sons last year but he had a packet last year that looked like it had about 30 pages or so it. And i remember a couple of times that i took him back to house to get it so he did not have QT for not having it and he called it a playbook. So that is what i am calling it. Maybe my son got a copy of all of it since he knew absolutely nothing about football and they did not no where they would use him at first i don't know. Just know he had more then a single page.

Re: GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
Who cares how big the playbook is. That is not the key to having success. The key is execution!! Coach Saunders ran the Wing-T and had success. Coach Boko ran more of a spread, and had success. So which offense is better? Two different styles, but each executed. So give me whatever offense you want and I will like it, as long as each player is executing their assignment.

Hey KV.... Would your son have been at the kickoff presentation for the new stadium... Just asking because one of their players opened the door for me when I arrived.. I shook his hand and asked him what position he had played last year.. We had a short conversation and he told me he was new to the program and would be working hard to contribute to the team this season... I was very impressed with this young man... Had good size for a football player and very well mannered... Don't think I am trying to figure ya out because I have no idea what the young mans name was.... Just asking!!!

Re: GAHS FOOTBALL 2012
I was there he was not, i don't think he was if he was, he was not in a uniform because i remember going and getting him from track practice and pretty much turning around and going back out with my wife. I remember the young man at the door can't remember his name right now i remember that i asked Mark Allen or Blake Wilson who it was and they told me his name but it eludes me right now. My son or to be totally correct my step son is not that big. I wish he was. As far as anyone knowing who i am does not bug me if not my user name would not be short for my real name.
