The Freshman did get some snaps on the last posession and looked very good. He had a 70yd td pass on his first play. The JV squad looked very good. I believe they had 3 or 4 tds on their 10 plays. But it all goes back to Huntington Ross not being that good. Friday may give us a better idea. I believe Piketon and Notre Dame to both be alot better competition.izladoom wrote:yeah they looked really good but it was hard to tell if it was us being that good or huntington being that bad. the backs looked great but the receivers really need to step it up. i was really impressed with both sides of the line. i think all the qbs threw the ball well but i really wanted to see the freshman get some game reps. he might have but i could not stay till the end. howard looks like a totally different qb. still not the best mechanics but he had more zip on his passes and i did not see too many lame duck passes today. i dont know how good piketon is but i hope they give us some better competition friday. i think we prob would have gotten more of a challenge at the inter squad scrimmage.

Yes im a west fan, so why pick up a scrimmage thats not going to help you, I mean scrimmage your second team if they made Ross look bad. This isnt gonna help you guys replace the dynamic duo in Keller and Yates..

These early scrimmages are nothing more than glorified practices. I agree that it helps to get a scrimmage in with a good program to see "where you are at" but the high school kids started hitting in practice in just the last week. So with that being said I think most coaches are trying to get a glimpse of where their kids are after a week of actual practice and see how they react to a game time situation.
Just like with Minford scrimmaging South Point. Its a glorified practice.
Valley did what they were supposed to do and that was beat up on Huntington Ross. I think it would benefit them to have a tougher scrimmage than Piketon or ND, but the same can be said about other schools as well. I agree with you that when you scrimmage schools like Huntington you are really no closer to knowing where your team is at than not scrimmaging at all. But its early in the year and I am sure all teams will look sloppy now but will greatly improve over the next few weeks.

So Red you wrote two paragraphs criticizing what he said only two agree with what he said
Valley may have had trouble getting a better team after moving Portsmouth to a real game.

Re: valleys scrimages
Yeah there was no way to tell how good they was after this scrimmage but I'm sure Crabtree knew that when he scheduled them. In sure it was fun for the kids and maybe they got more of what they needed which is confidence right now. They looked good and the new kids know they looked good. I think the idea way to do it would schedule one cupcake team and one better than you the problem is there is not enough good teams locally that has a spot open we don't already play. Huntington really looked like a middle school team out there. But like the one poster said valley did what they were sopposed to do. Main thing the kids had fun and no one got hurt.

I did agree with what he said! I think too much stock is put in these scrimmages.
When I played in high school we started practicing earlier in July and school didnt start till later than what it does now. So we had more practice time in the summer to get ready for scrimmages. Its hard to tell how good a team is when they scrimmage during their first week of actual practice!
Re: valleys scrimages
anyone know the time and format of the scrimmage friday? i heard 7 but i dont see how that can be right with the 3 teams that does not give them much time unless they go straight into the actual scrimmage.

Re: valleys scrimages
Heard the format will be similar to Tuesday. FB players have to be there at 6 so they will probably start warming up and practicing some soon after with scrimmages starting at 7. They may do it like they did a few years ago. 2 teams go while one watches and keep going untill they all get to play each other. If that makes any sense.izladoom wrote:anyone know the time and format of the scrimmage friday? i heard 7 but i dont see how that can be right with the 3 teams that does not give them much time unless they go straight into the actual scrimmage.
Re: valleys scrimages
The scrimmage went ok. We started off pretty slow but picked it up. A lot better competition tonight. The thing that stands out the most tho was piketon. I have never seen a team with that much size. I bet the had 10 players 300+ lbs. granted not many of them seen much action.
The run defense looked good. Gave up to much passing tho. All of the qbs looked good but I left again before the end so I did not see the freshman play again. The wrs are dropping way to many passes. It is not going to matter who the qb is if no one can catch. The tight end looks solid even better that last years. Team speed is really down this year. We got caught from behind a lot and that is something that has not happened the last few years. Looks to be same plays as last year maybe more from under center. Had about 4 low snaps tonight. Arnett seems to be a stud hard to take down but lacks break away speed. If a wr steps up we might be able to contend again. Does anyone know why the miller boys was not there tonight?

the miller boys were there, saw them both with their helmets off ...so they were there....and they played well ......also the JV team scored at will against both ND and Piketon and did not give up any....rolfe threw a bomb to romanello for a score , howard had 2 nice runs after some great downfield blocking to score twice... basham had an untouched 50 or 60 yd run to score, wolford ran hard up the middle for good yds and had several nice tackles on D to see his first action after being cleared to play ... the JV line did well they all played hard ....the JV's squads rotated play til 10:00 last night

Re: valleys scrimages
I went to the scrimmage. I was wondering how ND would do against the Valley and Piketon since they had such a young line.
I came away pleased. ND moved the ball very well against both teams. The overall scrimmage seemed to be very even.
Nice work for all teams involved.

Nope. They're next game will be the real one against Portsmouth on the 25th. I think the whole team should have to go to Portsmouth friday night and scout for themselves when Portsmouth scrimmages Piketon. But that is just my opinion.
Re: valleys scrimages
That would be so cool if they did that I doubt they do tho. I always see west players coming with there coaches to are games.
