Portsmouth has not been beaten by minford and they want to keep it that way even as bad as they lost last week this is a new game....

Much tougher than Piketon? You comments couldnt have been further off point!

I hate to compare scores, but Valley somewhat struggled against Portsmouth. Portsmouth was also missing their LB's for that game, and I can tell you the LB's that didnt play vs Valley are the bulk of Portsmouth's defense. Can imagine them stopping anyone without #55 in the game. It didnt matter for Minford though. They beat the entire Portsmouth defense.

Since you want to compare common opponents, Valley beat Portsmouth (minus their good defensive players) by 12 pts. Minford throttled them by 27.

Based on your logic of comparing opponents and scores, it looks like this so far in the SOC II:

Burg
Minford
Valley

Oddly enough

If you look at it that way shouldn't you also mention it was 14-14 until phs lost their top 2 offensive weapons?

Why not! I watched the Valley/Portsmouth game. Portsmouth defense was much better with their 2 LB's, and they were also better with their 2 RB's. Their RB's took some licks.

And it would have actually been 21-14 Minford by the time they would have been back in the game on offense. ;-)

If you watched the Valley/ptown game you also would know that Valley made a ton of mistake and tournovers in that game if you think thats the Valley team that Minford will be playing then week 10 will be very ugly......

If that's the Valley team Minford plays in week 10, your right, it will be ugly.

We can talk trash all we want but we both know Valley and Minford Has to get passed Burg to remain undefeated at week 10.
That is a complety different animal Burg has the talent and speed to beat Valley or Minford I think it will come down to who wants it more..!!!

This seems to be the psychological block everyone has in the conference "Burg Syndrome" , I believe if the players & community treat "that" game as if were just what it is,week 7 or 6 or whatever then no one would be over-psyched and make silly mistakes. This is just am observation, I have seen some good players and teams "shoot themselves in the foot" trying to hard, Let us focus on the "oaks " this week, one day one week at a time . :-D

I agree that everyone gets themselves too focused on beating Burg and they lose focus on the game at hand. I find it funny when the fans of teams like Valley go out of their way and spend money on shirts specifically with a Pirate logo with a circle around it and a line through the logo or that say "Beat the Burg". As a Burg fan that has more than my share of orange in my closet supporting various sports, I would never buy a shirt that has a specific opponent in mind, but that's just me. The players are probably not part of this as much, but you know they hear kids talking about it all week at school and it has to be somewhat of a distraction.

Great post. That is the way is has always been. To some teams, you can go 1-9 and if that one win was against the Burg, that made there season. I had a friend of mine that went to a local teams basketball banquet with a girlfriend and this team had beaten the Burg twice that year and he said that all they talked about was how they had beaten the Burg that year, even though they had a crappy season, it didn't matter, they had beat the Burg and that was satisfaction to them.

It is also amazing to me of how almost every school in the SOC has made up the "Beat the Burg" shirts at least once only to just get throttled in the game. I'm sure the person that made up the shirts loved all the sales, but seriously. I beleive in rooting against the other team when you play them but to that extreme??? I cringe when I see Burg people or any school wearing the "We're Number 1" shirts. Until you win that title on the field or court, you shouldn't have the right to wear a shirt that says that. AP poll champ doesn't count either. You have to win it playing an actual game.

I can guarantee you that every SOC team that Burg plays has made up shirts specifically for there game against the Burg.

I agree with you, It is just Burg but why do they put so much into "beating the Burg"?

I guess if you didn't play sports in high school, you wouldn't understand!

You probably know the answer but I'll state the obvious. The Pirates, at least from the mid-70s forward, have been the benchmark for athletics in Scioto County. No other school has enjoyed the decades run. Why wouldn't schools/communities rally around a game, especially when they feel they are fielding a competitive team? At one time schools like Wheelersburg, ND and West were all circled on calendars.

Sorry but this fascinates me that people feel this way. It is even more incredible that Burg thinks everyone thinks this way. :!:

I know they are having a bad year, but I always thought they had more football followers than that. I know by reading this thread, that the people in Portsmouth are not happy, but it's not the kids fault. Those kids really played hard tonight, and they will get better. And I know that some people are real upset with the Coaching down there. But just to let you know, alot of us outsiders really have alot of "Respect" for your head Coach. I, like Red, think he is a Class Act, and wish him, and the Trojans the best of Luck, the rest of the year!!!

Proud to be a Falcon!!!
Class Act?? I wouldnt get carried away with that. I dont know what coach you have been watching. Ive seen Clifford run the score up on every team he got the chance to. The only reason Clifford has changed is because the shoe is on the other foot. Dont fool yourselves either if he had the chance he would drop 80 on every team he played. Anything he could do to make his self look like the best coach ever he has done it at the expense of other schools. He would run the scores up so his stat sheet made him look like an offensive genius and puff up his chest like he is the c*ck of the walk. Just watch game film from the late 90's and early 00's. He would be on the radio on saturday bragging about haveing a running back go over 300 yds. What he failed to mention was he would play his starters until late in the 4th quarter in a game they was up by over 60 in. You can think about what you like but dont think everyone else in the county feels the same way. One good act doesnt change a career of bad. I for one am glad to see that the shoe is on the other foot. Not for the kids mind you they deserve better but Clifford is reaping all the seeds he has sown!

I wonder how the game would have went without the three Trojan players being injured and out for the second half. Trojans kept up pretty well for the first half, considering they already had two starting juniors out for their team and Minford being as good as they are. It says a lot about the Trojan players!! Certainly not taking away from the Falcons team.
