My point here is not to say that Ironton lost in 2011 because of penalties; turnovers were the story in that game. The point is this: there is not that much difference in how the game is being called on either side of the river. If you get too focused on the refs, you don't focus on executing your gameplan. Ironton's fans have been just as guilty at times as Ashland (or any other team) in trying to blame the refs in defeat. Good teams can overcome their mistakes and even the referees' mistakes. Bob Lutz played over half of his games away from Tanks Memorial Stadium when you consider all of the playoffs, and he still won 381 games and 80% of the time. He let refs know if he didn't like a call, but he did not dwell upon it. He knew that if you constantly make excuses and create a "culture of crying", then you will never achieve championship caliber performance.
