I think the "Buckeye Bash" has run it's course for a while. They need to start doing it every other year or something.....Last year they had a heck of a time selling enough tickets and you can bet they will struggle to do so this year.

They cut the cost of the tickets from $50 to $25. Also, most prizes are now cash prizes. If they don't sell enough tickets, they can adjust the cash prize winnings accordingly.

I think the way its set up now is the best fundraiser that would yield the most money for the boosters.

Most people will pay $25 for a chance to win a brand new 2012 Dodge Challenger I would think.

I don't think so......They will rally and sell enough tickets after pushing the date back 3 or 4 times, but they have to give it a rest for a year or 2. A lot of people start groaning as soon as they here Buckeye bash anymore......

Do you have to be present to win?

My work schedule won't allow me to be there for the drawings.

You do not have to be present to win. People have bought tickets from out of state in the past. They will call you if you win and are not present.

Buckeye Bash hopes to raise $50,000 for N-Y Athletic Department

Posted: Sunday, September 23, 2012 4:15 am

By ARIAN SMEDLEY Messenger staff journalist

NELSONVILLE — Organizer’s behind this year’s Buckeye Bash hope to bring in about $50,000 for capital improvements to the Nelsonville-York School District’s Athletic Department.

“We’ll shoot for $50,000, but if we get $5,000, that’s $5,000 we didn’t have before,” said Mike Bishop, treasurer to the Athletic Booster, which organizes the event.

The Athletic Boosters have hosted the bash for the past several years. Participants buy tickets (this year they’re $25) for a chance to win some top-of-the-line prizes, like a 2012 Dodge Challenger, Nikon camera, four wheeler and generators during a drawing on Oct. 13 hosted at the high school gym. Over $100,000 in cash and prizes will be given away.

A few of the items are donated, but most of the prizes are purchased by the boosters through the ticket sales. That’s caused some issues in the past when enough tickets weren’t sold, resulting in postponing of the bash. This year, they’ve placed a disclaimer on the tickets, indicating the cash prizes are dependent on ticket sales.

Last year, tickets sold for $50. But because of the economy, they’ve drooped the price.

“We decided this time to make the tickets a little cheaper,” said Annette Talbert, booster president. “We’re hoping that’ll result in more people buying them.”

So far, 800 tickets have been sold to locals and to individuals in places like Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Lancaster, Oak Hill and Pomeroy. The boosters hope to sell at least 5,000.

“I suspect those people are previous bash ticket buyers or they have relatives in the area,” Bishop said, in reference to the far-flung ticket buyers.

On a good year, the fundraiser can raise as much as $60,000. The least they’ve ever raised was $25,000. All of the money has been used for upgrades to the school’s athletic facilities.

Together with donations from Rocky Brands and many local businesses and individuals, the funds have been used to install an eight-lane polyurethane track, a new concession stand, turf football field, new seating on both sides of the football stadium, baseball and softball field renovations and other athletic program needs and wants, said Dave Boston, the district’s athletic director.

These are improvements for the school and the community, stressed Bishop.

The ticket also serves as admission to the event, which highlights food, drinks, games and other prizes.

“We’ll have the Indiana vs. Ohio State game on the TV, as well,” said Bishop.

Tickets can be purchased in person at Athens Sport Cycle, Taylor Motors, C&J Tax Service, the Pit Stop and Nelsonville Home and Savings. They can also be purchased online at http://www.nelsonvilleyorkathleticboosters.com.

“Our boosters work tirelessly in generating the needed funds to do all of the great things that we do here at Nelsonville-York,” Boston said via email. “Funds generated by the Buckeye Bash are definitely a big part of all athletic programs at N-Y. Without the Buckeye Bash, we would definitely not be able to provide the young people with the top-of-the-line equipment and facilities that we have now.”

Well, I figured, "Why not?" Help out some TVC brethren with a little potential to win something nice. Hope it does well and NY gets a little in their coffers!

O&B, you sure sound like a big supporter? Have you been to the bash, ppl love it, have you helped sell tickets? The boosters work very hard to pull this off. I have been to all the bashes and I love it. So much going on its worth the money to just go watch and eat! From what I am hearing everything is a go for this weekend! Nice job NYAB, I can't wait.

I hope all the tickets sellout!!!

What's next on the agenda in terms of spending money on the athletic facilities? I know additional outdoor restroom facilities is a major want/need for NY. Is that next on the list or will something else be built/rennovated first?

I can't wait to check out the new cross country course that was recently built at the school. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in town.

You are right the restrooms need an upgrade really bad! I was at the high school game against Meigs and It looked like the baseball and softball fields are getting a face lift.

The restrooms do need an upgrade but as long as I am an officer for the Athletic Boosters, we will not putting any funds for this project. That will be funded by the school, outside funds and the band boosters. Our main concern at this moment is the Baseball and Softball fields and the new storage building for track equipment.
The long term goals will be saving money to replace the turf. There needs to be at least $40,000/yr going to the replacement of the filed turf in the future. There is no specific time on how long the life span of the turf will last as the company is predicting about 15 years. We are in year 6 i believe so future boosters will need to start now planning for the future.
We have a few tickets left so buy them now if you do not have one. Thanks for all that support our cause and to those that curse it, well, I'll pray for you.
With Buckeye Pride,
Mike Bishop, Treasurer
N-Y Athletic Boosters
