when it was warmer (about 3 weeks ago) after dropping my child off for bball practice i noticed a bunch of cars at the Football field so i went over by and we had Coaches woodward, johnson, estep and maybe one or two more ALL working both FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL players but off. This is hugh. We ALL have to work together if WE want to stay on top in our area and make a big push once WE are in the playoff or tournament play. And by the way we are getting good use out of our New Football Field thanks to our coaches working together. Baseball will benefit a lot this winter and spring on rainy bad weather days.

then what wrote:As I see it the problem is this senior class has been then the weakest class athletically in the history of the school! The last few years the talent level has not been there. The 11th,10th 9th and 8th grade classes are full of football talent. There are alot of the kids that have parents who played on those dominating teams in the 80's and 90's. Another big problem is we haven't had a good line in a few years. The strength of the 10th and 9th grade classes is the lineman. When you add the skill kids from this year and sprinkle in a couple of those skill kids and those big lineman from the freshman class they should be pretty good next year. There are going to be so much talent in the next few years the coaches could almost have the players go one way. Of course player development is the key. Those lineman are working hard in the weight room and only play 1 or 2 (track) sports so it doesn't stop them from lifting year round unlike those skill kids that play 3 sports. Another problem is they need to give the weight room back to a football coach when Barrick retires. We started getting weaker when the football coach lost the weight room during school. In the 80's and 90's Football coaches had the weight room and all those skill kids took advanced PE 7th period and they were not allowed to slack off regardless of what sport they were playing. It all goes down to player development! The coaches we have are young and good. If the administration would give the weight room back to the football coaches during school hours it would help a bunch! Maybe when Barrick retires they could hire Madden he has his teaching degree and would do an outstanding job with the weight room! No worries pirate fans good times are coming back around.
Back in the day when it was segregated.....Nons over here and you guys to the weight room. LOL! As lazy as kids are today, Im not sure they want to lift and work hard. I dont know if they care enough about winning to do all the work. I think they are avg at best, just like fball nuts said

I agree, kids from the current generation are no where near the physical fitness level that kids were in the 60s, 70s, but that's not the reason burg's dominance ended. Wheelersburgs run in the 90s was due to great coaching and commitment, but the rest the league/area was inept. Minford, west, and northwest were all on the same playing field. None of them were very good. Waverly had some nice teams, but just simply didn't have the program.

In this current day, every team in the soc is lead by coaches with playoff experience and a ton of wins. Also, every team is committed in the weight room. The playing field is very much leveled in southern ohio. All of these kids are cut from the same mold, it now comes down to who has the most talent at the time and the development of said talent. Valley has had the most talented/best coaching the past few years.

One thing i havent seen mentioned on this thread and i'm not throwing darts at any schools is most teams now have 17+ year old Juniors and 18+ year old Seniors thus leveling the playing field . JMHO

Another big issue that the pirates have been slacking is the O-Line. That has been the weakest link the last few years. That problem will be solved huge athletic kids in freshman and soph class. You have to be able to control the line of scrimmage.........

Went to a watch a friends' son JV/Varsity baseball practice last year at school I won't mention because not really relevant, and he pointed out to me two "freshman" kids that drove to practice. His kid was 14, turning 15 in May and a freshman. So if these kids had licenses (no permit Mom and Dad weren't with them) then this makes a huge difference.

Being 18 and turning 19 in October of your senior year is an advantage, no doubt. Nothing against it some pretty decent research out there it helps your kid. 60 Minutes did a piece on it this year called "Redshirting" which was a "new" development in their eyes, parents holding kids to start kindergarten till 6 almost 7, for an advantage. Perhaps new to them, but not so new to some schools...and I'm not throwing darts at anyone. If it is legal and provides a long-term advantage to the kid, then probably some merit to it.

How many soc 2 regional. and state championships. does valley have? A couple of down years for the burg won't keep them down. poser.
No undefeated regular season since 1989, 6-13 in playoffs since 2000,No state semifinal appearance since 1998, and 5 soc titles in the last 13 hrs. That's not a couple down years, that's a mediocre southern Ohio football program this century.
PHS will take that kind of season...lol

As would most programs in the area! 100-46 record and 10 playoff appearances this century isn't too shabby. Their actual playoff record this century is 6-10 and 5 SOC titles in 13 hours would be an impressive feat by anyone

The numbers should be released in the next few days. I am guessing we will stay D5. The annual OHSAA discussion meetings are 4/14, so I am betting the numbers will be released next Monday (4/15).
