Being pure muscle and speed and able to bench 300 is nice but it's not going to translate to how football is played. Blocking and tackling is the key with the coaching staff putting them in the right place to succeed. The burg practically breaks their own weight lifting records every year. Every good program has the weight lifting. The key to irontons success is how they approach the game and their opponent.

Irontons weightlifting program has been nearly non existent for ten years. If you don't have a good weight lifting program your football program goes down the tubes. I agree X's and O's are very important and if you don't have a good offensive and defensive coordinator you can't win too. But if your kids show up in late July and say hey coach I'm ready to play football and he asks what they have done to prepare for the season and they say I haven't don'e anything, but I am going to play quarterback. If that team is a group of those kids you will have a real crappy record, or should. If you have a large number of players who started working out in the winter after football season was over strengthening, working on agility and even practicing their hopeful positions to the best of their abilities, along with plenty of cardio. You will see a successful group of kids. We have had our share of years in our recent past where not all, but most kids did show up late summer and expect to win without working out as you mentioned. You saw how that worked. Last year's group and this year's group I believe are understanding what it takes. Now starts phase 2, the preseason workouts. How serious will this group be about winning. I hope they get hyped. If they do maybe they will bring that needed excitement back into the tank and show what Ironton is all about. We had a few kids doing it last year. It was a great start. This group has a great chance to go big if they push themselves.

Ironton will play a "Jamboree Game" scrimmage against the Cleveland Knights in Ironton on August 22. While it is a bit tough to get information on this squad, they are described as a private, Christian-based non-OHSAA team, also known as the Cleveland Football Prep Academy. It sounds like it is some kind of club or travel team. In 2013 they played OHSAA teams like Conneaut and Beachwood, but I couldn't find anything on who they played last year.

Cleveland Knights canceled their season last year due to lack of players. I suspect there may not be a team in 2015 either?? Any Ironton insiders know if a new opponent is schedued for the Jamboree game?

Two schools had Cleveland Knights scheduled in regular season in 2015 and both have found replacement games already so that is why I suspect the team won't be in Ironton on 8/22.
