Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
I think the additions of Gallia Academy, Ironton, and Portsmouth, it's gonna have to force the other 5 OVC members to step up if they want to be able to compete, otherwise, it's gonna be the "Big 3" running the show in most sports, especially in football.
Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
Love It!
This is going to make all sports even more interesting! Think about it...
Each school has strong programs and weak programs depending on the sport.
There is more than football to think about...
Imagine the OVC Track Meet. Think of some of the baseball match ups.
Wrestling...maybe some OVC schools could add wrestling (which would help some of the weaker football programs, in my opinion). And then there is basketball...OH MY GOODNESS! In just the last 5 consecutive years, there has been an OVC program in State Final Four (boys or girls).
Who wouldn't want to be in the OVC? It will be a well rounded, geographically sensible, cost effective, competitive conference. Not mention all of the cool restaurants we can eat at before games!
Congratulations Gallia!

Ironton will run the football show for sure.
Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
The addition of Gallia Academy, Ironton, and Portsmouth also adds Boys Soccer, Boys Tennis, and Girls Tennis to the OVC and is 1 team short of adding Girls Soccer and Wrestling as well to the OVC. I think South Point would be most likely to be considered to add Wrestling and Gallia Academy for Girls Soccer.Henry Jones, Jr. wrote:Love It!

I bet Jackson ends up in the OVC as well.
Warren may have a very small shot at the TVC but don't hold your breath.[/quote

Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
Love the addition of Gallia to the OVC, the Blue Devils have a proud history and have been rivals with Portsmouth and Ironton for several years, without them Ironton, and Portsmouth have no real existing rivals in the OVC other then each other, although all original OVC members get up for Ironton football, and Portsmouth bball. Gallia hasn't had as much success on the football field lately but hoping that will be looking up, as I see them to be a hand full for most OVC schools. If Portsmouth can get its football back on track this is shaping up to be a pretty good league with Irontons great history, PhS and GAHS have some really good years with deep runs. Cheeasepeak also has had some quality teams with good playoff runs before, Coal Grove is always a tough physical team, and South Point and Fairland normally having lots of athletes, ( and who knows what thier enrollment will look like in a few years as they become more and more a suburbs of Huntington) Hoping the addition of teams elevates everyone's play.
As for Jackson I would love seeing them join but I don't see it being a very good move for them being a D 3 team playing in a predominantly d5 league.

How long will Jackson be Div III?
Jackson would boast the conference no doubt.
As for Symmes Valley joining the league would be 2 divisions like the SOC and would not be required to play Jackson.
The OVC has a chance to swing for the fences and hit that Grand Slam.
Jackson is very strong in football no doubt.
Basketball would be where they need to get stronger in Baseball they could compete in.
Be a great move for both the league and Jackson if this would work out.
And like I said Symmes Valley would help make two divisions and be a natural fit to come back.

Are you serious about the "BIG 3" in other sports??????????? Gallia Academy basketball is not very good - boys or girls. When was the last time GA beat Fairland or Chesapeake in basketball? The most successful sport at GA currently is baseball. If you think GA will just come into the OVC and dominate baseball then you do not know much about OVC baseball. I guarantee Rock Hill, Fairland, and Coal Grove will give them all they want. As for Ironton and Portsmouth, they are up and down in all other sports just like all other schools. I find it humorous that people really believe these new schools, because of the schools' names, will "run the show" in other sports. Some fans are going to be very disappointed!

Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
Huntington Dispatch broke the story about Gallia Academy may join the OVC this morning. Said it has to be approved by Galipolis Board of Education, whose next meeting is coming up next week.

Do the smart, economic and fan-friendly reason and leave while you can. Those long bus rides are agonizing for any boy/girl. I mean, you can only text for so long on a bus until you forget where you're headed to play.

Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
What would two ovc division look like ? I'm sure the ovc wouldn't ask Jackson to join but just outa curiosity....maniac66 wrote:How long will Jackson be Div III?

[quote="Jottings"]Gallipolis has had trouble beating Ironton in football and Portsmouth in basketball. Why would GAHS officials want to join the OVC?[/quote
This is a statement of concern in my mind. If we cant beat em we dont wana play em? I hope everyone in Gallipolis doesnt feel this way.

Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
The Ironton vs. GAHS series is, I think, Ironton's third most played... behind Portsmouth and Ashland (KY).
Re: Gallipolis reportedly headed to OVC
If it were just Jackson joining the OVC to make 9 teams, I can see 2 options:Viking96 wrote:What would two ovc division look like ? I'm sure the ovc wouldn't ask Jackson to join but just outa curiosity....maniac66 wrote:How long will Jackson be Div III?

Option A - Tradition and Rivalries
Division 1
Gallia Academy
Ironton
Jackson
Portsmouth
Division 2
Chesapeake
Dawson-Bryant
Fairland
Rock Hill
South Point
Option B - Enrollment
Division 1 - 200+ Boys and 185+ Girls
Fairland
Gallia Academy
Jackson
South Point
Division 2 - <190 Boys and <175 Girls
Chesapeake
Dawson-Bryant
Ironton
Portsmouth
Rock Hill
If a 10th team is added like Symmes Valley or Oak Hill, in Option A, move Fairland up to Division 1. In Option B, move up Portsmouth to Division 1. Just a thought, but I think the OVC stops at 8 teams. Jackson is too large and in my opinion, Symmes Valley only joins is if gas prices sky-rockets or the SOC moves up Symmes Valley (largest in SOC I) to SOC II and brings down South Webster (would be 4th largest in SOC I) to SOC I.
