Week 6: Athens (5-0) @ Steubenville (4-1)
Re: Week 6: Athens (5-0) @ Steubenville (4-1)
I was speaking of this thread and maybe huddle and others but most of those are Athens or Big Red fans. Myers better worry about his defense and very weak Buckeye team.

I think they picked the wrong team then for homecoming if that was the case.teach1coach2 wrote:One note: Friday night is homecoming for Steubenville. I know most schools try to pick a weaker home opponent in the middle of the season as the homecoming game. The Big Red has 9 home games. The person who picks the homecoming week picked Athens. May or may not mean something.
If memory serves this game was a late add for Athens well after the season was over last year. It seems as if the invitation by Steubenville to Athens was discussed for a while before accepted if I recall. I remember being some talk of it on here that there was an offer but it seems like it was a couple weeks before the "deal" was finalized and the game set.
Call me crazy, but isn't one of Athens' line coaches a former Big Red lineman from the 70's? Could there have been some discussion with him (assuming he still has family or some contacts from his old hometown) to consider this might be the year to schedule them? Don't forget when this was scheduled the results of last year play-offs were already in...Maysville barely losing to Steubenville in Week 11...the same Maysville that Tri-Valley walloped....the same TV that Athens beat in a barn burner in Week 12.
I would say Athens was pretty calculating here knowing what they had coming in 2014, knowing from their line coach maybe that Big Red was a little "average" by their standards and well aware of the results from the recently played play-offs. A great move on Athens' part scheduling an opponent of this caliber at the right time.
It is going to rain on Steubenville's Homecoming....both precipitation and TD's I think. Unless I miss my mark lol (which frequently happens) I think Steubenville is paying Athens to come ruin their Homecoming. Speaking of that is anyone aware of what the actual deal was for Athens in dollars paid or gate percentage?

Dont think they had to pay much. Athens would not under any conditions play a two year contract so that negotiated price went way down. Wont be any big red type teams on Bulldogs schedule next year. Dont know if they are paying anything at all.

Although your line of thought seems valid I don't think it goes that deep. As I recall Athens had orginally scheduled Ironton for week 6. I think that Athens had some difficulty nailing down the Ironton game, for what ever reason, and were worried about not having a game six, so when Steubenville came calling and Athens couldn't get a definate yes or no from Ironton, they scheduled the game with Big Red.

$50,000 plus a charter flight to Steubenville and charter buses to the game with a police escort, plus Di Carlo’s pizza after the game. Almost forgot Athens gets to Bring its own Officials, Gibby will be doing the PA and the Kettle Corn Guys get to set up inside the stadium.Green Beagle wrote:doubleplay643 wrote: Speaking of that is anyone aware of what the actual deal was for Athens in dollars paid or gate percentage?

Sweet deal if you ask me.
Re: Week 6: Athens (5-0) @ Steubenville (4-1)
The Athens fans are getting 25 cents per mile with a sliding scale meal per diem depending on size of family. And the Bulldogs are getting a minimum 2 touchdown victory.
Re: Week 6: Athens (5-0) @ Steubenville (4-1)
The Di Carlo's Pizza is more then fair compensation, Athens Fans will agree. Ribs and food at Damon's, only about 1/2 mile from the Stadium on University Drive ( can't miss it) will be worth it................Myself, getting ribs at Dee Jay's before the game. Think all you want, the chunk of change is significant for a H.S. Football game. And Athens has Logan next year, the self described greatest program in all of Southern OhioGreen Beagle wrote:doubleplay643 wrote: Speaking of that is anyone aware of what the actual deal was for Athens in dollars paid or gate percentage?

If they can't find enough Ohio teams willing to travel to Harding Stadium, they just schedule out of state teams. I think they have 5 out of state teams on their schedule this year alone.Trenchfoot wrote: Don't know how they get by with any of it, and all of the home games they have year after year.

Steubenville's "secret" is that they schedule out of state teams that nobody wants to play ( often parochials). They'll get teams from Baltimore , D.C. and Pa. who'll travel for a game. Canada is an option. Many from Ohio don't want to play there, either because of the level of play or the "reputation" that Big Red has , lol. Playing Ursuline and Massillon along with other NEO schools and some from the WV panhandle usually make up the schedule.

What are the odds Paladin says "Steubenville was not the Steubenville of old" ... If Athens was able to pick up the win tomorrow?
I'm putting the over/under at 99%.

The Seniors for Athens have compilled a [28-3] Record...seoconstruction wrote: 93 ... They aren't ... And Athens is overrated
Regular Season they are at [24-1]...
Post-Season they are at [4-2]...
I believe any program in the State would gladly take this three-year span of Football in a heartbeat.
Against the SEOAL Schools they are: (6-1)
Gallia Academy - 2-1
Warren - 3-0
Jackson - 2-0
Against Outside Area Leagues they are: (5-0)
Watkins Memorial - 2-0
Fairland - 1-0
Waverly - 1-0
Zanesville - 1-0
Inside the TVC, they are : (12-0)
Nelsonville-York - 2-0
Alexander - 3-0
Vinton County - 3-0
Wellston - 2-0
Meigs - 2-0
----
Against D-II Opponents: (4-0)
Watkins Memorial - 2-0
Zanesville - 1-0
Warren (2012) - 1-0
---
Against D-III Opponents (Including Play-Offs): (11-3)
Jackson - 2-0
Gallia Academy - 2-1
Vinton County - 3-0
*Logan Elm - 1-0
*Circleville- 1-0
*Tri-Valley - 1-0
*Springfield Shawnee - 1-0
*Thurgood Marshall - 0-1
*Marion Franklin - 0-1
*Play-Offs
That Puts Athens at [15-3] against D-II & D-III schools...again, pretty sure any Program in the State would take that record against schools bigger or the same size as you over a 2 and half year span...
Playing such a weak TVC Schedule has found the Bulldogs at:
2013 - #1 Seed in Division III. Region 9 (10-0)
2012- #3 Seed in Division III, Region 12 (9-1)
2011- #2 Seed in Division III, Region 12 (Non-Burrow Led Bulldogs)(10-0)
For Comparison, Jackson/Gallia Academy/Chillicothe (same size schools from SEO non-TVC schools) playing similar schedules have finished at:
2013 - #6 Seed in Division III, Region 9 (Chillicothe)(9-1)
2012 - #4 Seed in Division III, Region 12 (Gallia Academy)(8-2)
2011 - #7 Seed in Division III, Region 12 (Jackson)(10-0)

What is the over and under on phantom holding calls on long TD passes by Burrow that are called back. You know the kind where the flag drops out late after the play is determined?
I will go with two.
Good luck to Athens, all the Bulldog faithful traveling the 3 hours be safe given the weather forecasts. Think Athens wins this one, despite the "homer" field advantage lol.

Rain and the big reds defense will slow down the bullpuppies just enough to give the big red a very close win!
