Re: Week 3 Logan (0-2) @ Meigs (1-1)
Logan really playing Meigs in a non-league game? Was the school for crippled children booked? Not a slam on Meigs, good young team, but Logan is almost 2.5x larger, and will get nothing out of this. Meigs with a good core group of young players could have some ego's bruised after this one.
Looks like Logan is doing the Athens shtick, pick on small rural country schools.
Coal grove ran all over Meigs and dominated them physically, CG is not in Logan's class in this category, and that's no disrespect to CG. Logan is a large school with some pretty solid players, just amazed this is being played as a non-league game.

Barlow Bandit -
Think you sell Meigs short. I think Meigs has more the 50/50 chance to beat Logan. Logan has not been able to dominate anyone up front so far this season. Meigs may run for 400-500 yards again on Friday night.
bird78 - It's a 2-year home and home.
With the collapse of the SEOAL Logan is desperate for games. DeSales will replace Zanesville next year and Cambridge will replace Loudonville. Still have an opening in week 6 next year.

But that being said, Locos is right. The SEOAL troubles and the fact that school have shrunk in SE Ohio (including Logan) what choices do they have?
Is it ok for them to play D6 Nelsonville-York but not D4 Meigs because NY is a traditional football school and Meigs is not?
If you have been following High School Football the past 5 years then you have seen things change dramatically. The old addage that you schedule the toughest schedule of schools bigger than you has been squashed. Teams who have balanced their schedules have found better rankings at seasons end. The only way for Logan to over schedule above their Division would be to travel North, and travel some distance. But Why? When scheduling the NY/Logan game Both teams could gain from it. NY had been a 7-8 win lock a season so Logan would score points there and if NY beat Logan, they would gain points just because of Logans size.
Logans - (D2)
D1 - Lancaster
2 D2's - Zanesville and Teays Valley
D3 Jackson
3 D4's - Gallia Academy, Warren and Meigs
D5 - Portsmouth
2 D6's - Nelsonville-York and Loudenville
Logan's Schedule is currently 12-8
Just for some Comparrison, look at these schedules.
Jackson - (D3)
D2 - Logan
D3 -
2 -D4's - Warren and Gallia Academy
6 -D5's - Wellston, Waverly, West Jefferson, Wheelersburg, Portsmouth and Ironton
D6 - Bishop Ready
Jackson's Schedule is currently 10-10
Athens - (D3)
D2 - Zanesville
D3 - Vinton County
4 -D4's - Warren, Gallia Acedemy, Meigs and Steubenville
3 -D5's - Alexander, Wellston and River Valley
D6 - Nelsonville-York
Athens Schedule is currently 12-8
Meigs - (D4)
D2 - Logan
2-D3's - Athens and Vinton County
D4 -
5 -D5's - Fairland, River Valley, Alexander, Wellston and Ironton
2 - D6's - Nelsonville-York and Coal Grove
Meigs Schedule is currently 10-10
With the change in the Divisions and the addition of the 7th Division, don't let that be the only driving point on the schedule.
Re: Week 3 Logan (0-2) @ Meigs (1-1)
Athens had the formula for building a solid "big school" program in SE Ohio figured out several years ago when they made the decision to pull out of the sinking ship this was (and is) the SEOAL. They went from being a joke to arguably the best football program in SE Ohio by scheduling realistically and building from there. Now, they've lost 1 regular season game in the last 3 years, have had playoff success, and are have Steubenville on the schedule this year. I remember how the Logan faithful ridiculed Athens on this site for skipping out on the SEOAL and accused them of not wanting to take their lumps. It seems the tables have turned and Logan is playing catch up.
Re: Week 3 Logan (0-2) @ Meigs (1-1)
Some Purple Napkin Stats for the first 2 Weeks (0-2)
… any time your offense can average over 40 points per game you have to feel good (41.5 ppg) UNLESS of course your defense is giving up 43.5 ppg …
Defensively Logan has allowed their opponent to control the game clock with the ground game :
2 games Logan Opponents on the ground 955 yds … over 400+ by both Lancaster and Teays Valley
Ground games for the opponents has them doubling up on the time of possession on the Chiefs :
Logan a little over 32 minutes (2 games) vs Opponents a little over 64 minutes
Offensively for the Purple:
Passing yds 592 total
Rushing yds 143 total
AGAIN only using up 32 minutes of game clock offensively …

I bet Billy B will be working on the defensive problem from here on out. The Chiefs wins this game.
Re: Week 3 Logan (0-2) @ Meigs (1-1)
… in the heat of the last 2 Friday nights … keeping that defense on the field 2x as long as your own offense - by the 2nd half (late 3rd quarter & 4th quarters) - it is going to show on the scoreboard … going to get some stops on early downs BUT when those 3rd & longs come around after putting it out there on downs 1, 2 … we're seeing the let downs - especially in the line where we have 2 way players in the trenches … not sure what the answer is as you want to have your best athletes on the field 100% of the time on both sides of the ball - going to have to "develop" some players from those backups … work them in with playing time that can lead to more rest for current players …
… a consistent rushing game from someone other than your QB would help run some clock, give some rest to players … as I posted previously the offense is putting up 41.5 ppg ! hard to argue with that napkin stat … have to see what the coaches come up with for Meigs this week …

Again, no disrespect to Meigs, Coach Bartrum is doing a nice job, and they have some nice still young talent. However do not try and tell me that you can compare Lancaster and Teays Valley to CG and Fairland. The brand and style of football is night and day.

They also had a QB good enough to go play at Ohio State transfer into the school district. If only the rest of SE Ohio could be so lucky.fuzzhead wrote:Athens had the formula for building a solid "big school" program in SE Ohio figured out several years ago when they made the decision to pull out of the sinking ship this was (and is) the SEOAL. Coach Adams at Athens is a great coach and has done a great job building a very good program there. And Athens is NOT a one man team.
But let's not pretend that leaving the SEOAL or their scheduling is the reason they've had playoff success. They've also had the most talent, headlined by Mr. Burrow.

Great post. Defense DEFINITELY has some issues. But one of those issues is being on the field WAY too much.
Logan has not controlled the line of scrimmage in either game they have played. And lost both games. The team who controls the line of scrimmage controls tempo and dictates to their opponent. Logan has been forced to have their defense on the field for WAAAY too long no matter how you slice it up.
If Logan can do something about reversing time of posession, I'll guarentee the defensive numbers improve even if the play of the defense does not get better.

I think if Meigs has all of their front men healthy, they will definitely give the Chiefs a game. Honestly, this is a toss-up for me.
If the Chieftains can start controlling the tempo of the game on the offensive side of the ball, they will get their first win.
If they do not, I think Meigs may be able to use that and the boost of playing in front of their home crowd at Farmer's Bank Stadium to notch an impressive win.
