Re: Warren Job
This is just rumor so take it for what its worth.
An assistant from Alexander, last name of Fish????
A junior high coach from Dresden
A older man from somewhere in W.VA, heard a school but have never heard of the school and can't remember it right now.
The guy that was here left for South after a year.
Former Caldwell coach.
Just a few that have been floating around, who knows????
Hope they settle on someone soon, the kids really need someone .

Would that be Jon Bolen
Former Caldwell coach
Would that be Mike DeVol

Re: Warren Job
Mike Devol has a knack for knowing when to come to a program and when to leave it.
He came to Warren during the greatest run of athletes they ever had, then departed before the well was completely dry.
He then moved on to South and capitalized on its best classes in recent memory and left before it broke.
Then to Caldwell for its more recent run of good athletes, takes them to playoffs, then backs away.
Its probably his greatest skill at this point. If he takes a Warren job (doubtful) I would tend to believe he sees something that can produce a winner in the next few years.

Re: Warren Job
^^^Very dumb post. Do you think DeVol is some sort of soothsayer who sets around looking into a crystal ball to see which programs will do well before he applies?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..........the guy is a good coach. He takes jobs, develops athletes, doesnt overdo it on rules, and wins....BIG TIME!

Re: Warren Job
Oh yea? Well I bet he couldn't sell the first car if he worked on a used car lot. Probably not much for selling insurance either. That's what Warren needs. It worked at Belpre, and it worked at Marietta didn't it?Bart Kowski wrote:^^^Very dumb post. Re: Warren Job
Who ever they hire they aren't doing them any favors by dragging this out. How many more days are there for weight lifting? How much time will they have to sell themselves to the kids and community? Put a staff together? There are a lot more things that need to be done and the days are dwindling.
I know that someone will tell me about how some guy got hired in August and won the State but doesn't it speak to the commitment to the program from the Administration that it's taking this long?

Re: Warren Job
Yeah, that is dumb. He successfully coached at Caldwell for what? 15+ years before taking the Warren job? Warren sucked most of the decade before he got there and they have mostly sucked since he left. I would chalk that move up to wanting a new challenge - not uncommon for people who experience a lot of success. What Devol did was bring a little bit of success to an otherwise terrible program.swamisez wrote:Mike Devol has a knack for knowing when to come to a program and when to leave it.

South? Again, what had South EVER accomplished in football? How many winning seasons had they had in their history? And he won a State Championship. They haven't done much since then because they haven't had a coach of that caliber.
Then Caldwell again. Pretty much sucked after he left and until he got back. No surprise that a guy who built a program there once (and it might also be his alma mater?) would go back when the fortunes have faded.
Clearly, the guy has a skill for turning crappy programs into winners and I can't stress enough how idiotic it is to imply that every one of those places was just going to magically succeed because they had some good athletes all of a sudden.

Re: Warren Job
I think the tome of my post was completely misconstrued. I don't discredit Mike DeVol at all. I played for the man and know what a great coach and person he is. I didn't think I made it sound like he was not a hall of fame coach (which he is) at all. I am not going to go into depth any further because I think Mike knows how much I think of him and don't think he cares one bit about what is written on an internet forum. I would love to have him return to Warren because I know he does things the right way and is great with kids.

Re: Warren Job
Another possibility, I heard about over the weekend. Present teacher Jason Johnson as an interim coach to allow a more indepth search and time to closely look at candidates. Athens did this with Winefurtner for two years and he coached the team for them to do this, told them he would coach for two max, they had till then to find someone. This was to get the present coach, I believe. So, anyway take this for what its worth, just rumor mill stuff, no real solid info. Kids are really itchy to know something.

Re: Warren Job
2nd interviews last week. still no teaching openings. final 3 were fish from alexander, junior high coach from trivalley, and justice from chilly. devol never applied, bolen missed interview, and mccoy from wv dropped out. hard to get a good quality coach when there are no teaching openings. heard talk that committee wanted to approach welch but he has no interest. why would he leave phs!
Re: Warren Job
Fortdawg,
Devols first round (I think 23 years) at Caldwell he did not make it to the play offs. Prior to his second round at Caldwell, the coach at the time (Coffman I believe, he is also Fort Frye's head coach's brother in law and was defensive coordinator) made it to the playoffs for the first time in school's history.

Because he is a assistant, not the head coach at PHS

Re: Warren Job
welch as assistant at phs is better than head coach at whs. also, devol did make playoffs 2x first round at caldwell. 1985 and i believe 1990.
Re: Warren Job
I believe Devol took Caldwell to the playoffs in 1985. I think they were 10-0 and rode the back of a big fullback by the name of Dale Harper if I am not mistaken. They may have gone to the playoffs 2 years in a row but I am not sure.teach123 wrote:Fortdawg,
