The question is an interesting question. My initial thought was, "How do you define great?" Do you base your response on win/loss record? Is your measure of greatness based on the number of athletes who moved on to the next level? Or are you subjectively measuring the impact the coach had on the lives of the young men/women in the program? Most of the posts I have read (I admit I have not read them all) suggest that the criterion most have used to base their assessment is the wins vs losses or the number of college/pro athletes that were a part of the school's program. I would contend that the greatest coaches are the ones which were exceptional role models and cared deeply about the personal, as well as, the athletic lives of the students. It is more difficult to measure. To be honest, I am afraid that most fans would rather have wins than a coach who builds character and is a positive role model. I have been away from the area for a number of years so can not speak with any measure of authority but Jim "Snuffy" Smith, to me, reflects what it means to be a great coach.

Dick tipton is the greatest head coach West has had. He was 136-56 in 19 seasons. During his time West won 6 league titles, 2 playoff appearances, and 1 undefeated season. Tipton also had around a .500 record vs burg. He made West a known force in area.

Mike Sammons took us to our greatest success, but Tipton instilled a winning culture and consistency.

In my opinion, Swain is probably 2nd or 3rd. He had a lot of good teams and arguably the greatest team in West history (1970 team that went 9-1 and lost to state champion Notre Dame). I know Tipton isn't the most popular person, but he had longevity and success.

Lost his first football game ever while a professional athlete with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1972. Won the Grey Cup later that season.

Undefeated in high school at Portsmouth Notre Dame and in college at Toledo.

We are forgetting about the greatest coach in the history of SE Ohio: Branch Rickey. 4-time world series champion as a general manager, developed the farm system in baseball with the Cardinals Organization, signed Jackie Robinson, signed Roberto Clemente, one to break the African-American barrier and the other to open the doors for Latinos, played college baseball and football at Ohio Wesleyan and invented full-time spring training with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was born in Stockdale, Ohio.

There are several female athletes from Scioto and Lawrence Counties that were more athletic than her.

Katie couldn't come close to the athletes from Scioto County in the 1950's and 1960's. Players such as Curt Gentry, LeRoy Carr, and Larry Hisle were tremendous multi-sport athletes.

Do your homework.

OJ Mayo was the best athlete I've ever seen. Last I checked he lived in south point till college. His brother Todd mayo that played at south point was also a freak athlete.

Not going to lie, I am half tempted to ask the mods to lock this topic off. I posted this topic to gather opinions about the greatest coach in a program's history. This has turned into a mix between the greatest athlete of all time and a borderline bar fight.
