Re: Time to go back to 8 team playoff???
Don’t know the exact numbers but sure seemed like there were a ton of 9 over 8, and 10 over 7 playoff “upsets”. Those are the type of toss up games like in March Madness but those matchups wouldn’t have existed with 8 teams.
Ultimately 16 teams is what it is, it’s going to stay that way no matter how much anyone complains. I’ve came to the conclusion that the extra game for the seniors, an extra week of practice for the underclassmen, and the ability to hang a playoff banner for those lower seeded teams who probably have no shot to win is beneficial, especially to programs who are trying to become successful because you have to start somewhere.
There will be upsets, close games, and obviously blowouts but that’s why they play the games.

Maybe 16 isn’t the right number but using Harbin points to decide the top 8 isn’t the answer either. Only way to do that is to force these teams play similar schedules. Not fair that a team in a weaker league can go 8-2 and team in a tough league goes 4-6. Tusky Valley was the 14 seed and probably 6 or 7th best team in the region.

2021: #10 Portsmouth 28, at #7 Zane Trace 22
2022: #9 Portsmouth 28, at #8 Union Local 26
2023: #15Portsmouth 50, at #2 Fairland 38
Cutting back to 8 teams would have kept Portsmouth from winning 3 straight years on the road against the higher seed.

Higher seeds need to stay on top of their game
Love the underdog getting a chance.
Example..... Arizona Diamond Backs

If you want a lot of kids and teams enjoying the playoffs 16 is the way to go.
If you only want great teams in the playoffs then go with the top 2.
It would force teams who want to make the playoffs to load up their schedule and it would force teams that dominate their league because they are bigger than their opponents to find a new league.
If you go to 2 then it makes it tough to make it with a creampuff schedule.
I suppose it could be done at the lower levels but you'd be taking a big chance.

If there was a way to hit that magical number just looking at the who upset who over the course of the weekend. It looks like going top 12 is the sweet spot as there were several 12 teams who beat the 5 seed. With 12 you go, bye week for the top 4 you get much better games across the board in week 11 and then come week 12 you rock and roll with those 8 still standing. Now I will go on to say while I think this is the best option, they've got this 16 team setup already in place and I don't see them backing off of that number

Thanks, Bozo, for the info on Portsmouth's 2021 seed. I should have known we weren't a #10 seed because we played at #1 seed Ironton in week 12.

Pennsylvania got it right when they changed PIAA playoffs. Each district (our region) in each classification's total # of seeds is determined by the total amount of teams in the district. There are some brackets with 12 or 16, and some with 8 or 4. It works itself out nicely and making the playoffs still means a lot. Ohio should do something similar.

You may want to check your math. Those 2 setups aren't even possible.
I still think 12 is the number. That was the plan before Covid that the coaches association voted in.

I thought the coaches kicked back on this saying they’d rather play than have a bye?

No. The coaches association voted to make it 12. The state followed the coaches wishes and made it 12. Covid changed it and here we are.EasternDspy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 02, 2023 9:25 amCrab's Brother wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 6:34 pmYou may want to check your math. Those 2 setups aren't even possible.

Re: Time to go back to 8 team playoff???
I’m sure they’d rather have 12 than 8. This is after covid they sent out a survey asking the coaches about expansion to 16. Most coaches I talked to said they’d rather play a 13-16 seed than have a bye. Not playing a football game for 14 days really does more hurt than good most of the time.Crab's Brother wrote: ↑Thu Nov 02, 2023 11:53 amNo. The coaches association voted to make it 12.
