Not all schools are in great shape financially and can just make up a job for someone to do so they can be a football coach

“Community relations tool…” means nothing unless he can build a football team that sells more game tickets, concessions, etc. Return on the $70k investment is what matters.
I love football as much as anybody, but it would be very hard to establish that a HS football team in SEO could generate everything it needs to pay for itself, especially if you are manufacturing a $70k position for a teacher.RBH23 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2023 10:51 pm“Community relations tool…” means nothing unless he can build a football team that sells more game tickets, concessions, etc. Return on the $70k investment is what matters.
And yes, $70k is a big deal if the school is fighting just to stay out of the red. Which takes us back to “what’s the ROI from paying this coach?”
Agree. $70k is a big bill for many schools.madpolecat wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 9:58 amI love football as much as anybody, but it would be very hard to establish that a HS football team in SEO could generate everything it needs to pay for itself, especially if you are manufacturing a $70k position for a teacher.RBH23 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2023 10:51 pm“Community relations tool…” means nothing unless he can build a football team that sells more game tickets, concessions, etc. Return on the $70k investment is what matters.

Many mid-major D-1 college programs run in the red. Why do you think Kent State made a trip to Arkansas this fall? To help pay the bills, of course.
Excellent points. Have seen many coaching jobs go down the list of choices because of things like in-house posting and teaching positions that need filled first.GrumpyPundit wrote: ↑Wed Dec 27, 2023 12:00 am Many people are throwing out this $70k figure and talking about creating a job. I don’t think public schools work this way in 2023. That $70k in salary probably costs the district another $50k in insurance and STRS retirement. Also depending on Minford’s negotiated agreement, any “created” job might have to go through internal bidding first, meaning that the job created for a coach might be taken by someone in-house first.
Just a long winded way of saying there are a lot of potential hurdles in hiring someone from out of district to coach if it’s dependent on a teaching job.
Settlements were paid by insurance so that has no bearing. Moreso the years of failing to maintain sufficient funds in accounts for maintenance and improvements and robbing Peter to pay Paul end. Things have broken, needed upgraded, etc.CuckooNest wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 9:39 am Paying out settlements sure puts a cramp on the financial situation.
