If I was a Burg fan I would be more concerned that the Burgs offense only had around 20 yards in the 2nd half!? That’s alarming to me. If it wasn’t for a few missed tackles early in the game by the Ironton defense against Rucker QB, Burg would be under 100yrds for the game.

It’s exactly it. You play and develop who you have?fbnut wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 9:24 amI can only think of a handfull of D1 kids we've had in the past 30 yrs so I dont think that's it.
Re: Week 1 Ironton @ Wheelersburg 2024
Appreciate your positive take and respect your opinion. But the past few years, Burg has been performing below their long term trend. And the glaring problem is the offense.wobycat wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 9:12 amI would agree with you if we weren’t advancing in the playoffs but that ain’t the case. I mean you have to really think back to our rosters. There’s not one d1 or d2 kid on our team in the last three years since Covid. I think we’ve done a good job.
Take a step back and look over the results since Woodward has been coach. The conclusion would be he’s done a great job but has slipped since 2018. However look one level below that. Burg’s offensive system has not done well against good teams and has been bailed out by the defense over and over again.
From 2013 to now, Burg’s passing game struggles badly against athletic, speedy defensives whereas Burg’s running game has done much better. But Burg’s stats overall look deceptively good because they beat the hell out of the bad teams.
The reality is that we are running the wrong offense given our personnel. Burg’s not going to produce Holden’s and Matthew’s each year, so we shouldn’t run an offense like we are.
Kirtland coach understands this, hence why he runs the offense that he does. Brian White, when he was coaching HD, understood this and ran an offense that Burg should be emulating.
Definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. That summarizes Burg’s approach to offense.

Yup. 1 and 10 over the last 3 seasons vs Ironton Jackson and Prep.
And mcnichols will beat burg also. Book it.

Burgs team speed is not good. What I saw a big team that was slow the QB is quick for sure but the line was not on either side of the line.

I’m going to revisit this topic at the end of the season. Yup. Big and slow. Ironton was smaller up front but fast and athletic. Burgs guys looked gassed early.

Ironton’s defense looked pretty dang good considering they were missing arguably the best defensive player in the area in Josh Johnson.wobycat wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2024 10:11 pm Terry has to stay healthy and ironton could have a chance to make it back to state. I think they need to go old school offensively.

Burg just hasn't had the explosiveness in the past few years. Their defense has been their strength. Ironton will make a lot of teams look slow this year

Re: Week 1 Ironton @ Wheelersburg 2024
I thought Burg defense battled all night until they started subbing out in 4th quarter. What surprised me was the Burg offense and passing game looking that rough, especially with Ironton's best defensive player out. Did Burg have 50+ yards passing all night?
As long as Burg in Region 19, time for Burg fans to dial back expectations. Ease up the nonconference schedule (take Harvest Prep and McNich off) and add local "gate" teams to the schedule instead (Portsmouth, Fairland, South Point, etc.). Burg still favorites to win SOC every year as long as they keep their roster at 70+ kids.
Likewise, I still think Burg is better off moving up a division to D4. That gets them away from HP and Ironton come playoff time. Those teams aren't going to quit adding players. If Burg isn't willing to play the transfer game at that level, then get away from it. Moving up a division can be done if they ease up on the open enrollment restrictions. There are obviously solid teams in D4 and your first-round playoff game going to be tougher, but I don't see any super athletic HP or Ironton type of teams in Region 15 or 16.*

I agree with the offense they moved the ball on the ground to score but later go completely away from it. I would also say the offensive line is not built for the pass slow feet and to overweight.RBH23 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 10:08 amAppreciate your positive take and respect your opinion. At this rate Ironton and Prep will move up to D IV before Burg does. I’m sure Prep will get some new recruits next season after beating a Pickerington school last night. If ya look at game stats burg run game was really only minimally succesfull at best. What i noticed is as the game progressed, Ironton kids got stronger and burg kids got gassed. Feels like the Ironton kids are way more conditioned and depth was a huge factor. Ironton penetrated burgs o line at will.

The school of "superior coaching and culture" is ready to run away from Ironton and Prep faster than Terry ran away from burgs defense. Lmao my how the mighty "superior" have fallen. Lmao

Irontons offense was balanced. 200 on ground. 200 in air. And they were patient. Very impressed.
