Week 5: Waverly (3-1) at Portsmouth West (2-2)
The Senators (Siders?) won their second straight beating Chillicothe 18-17 while Waverly escaped with a 27-21 win over Valley.
Does the edge go to West being at home and Waverly's struggles with running the ball and defending the rush?
Winner likely clinches the runner up spot in the SOC2.

How is Waverlys ability to throw the ball and pass block?

I have not seen Waverly in person, but from their live streams the Tigers live and die by big plays from QB Mason Kelly throwing to some very good receivers. Pass blocking has been adequate.

Waverly has some exceptional athletes on the outside and a 3 year starting QB so the passing game is very strong. Pass blocking isn't great and I'm sure a lot of that has to do with snaps they seemed to fix a lot of that part on friday night but all in all the QB simply doesn't have a lot of time to throw. QB is on the run a lot, but Waverly continues to throw deep tough to read things that way. However, with Swords and Sparks on the outside it's a major mismatch for West secondary. Unioto played the game to take away Swords by sending help over the top and they didn't even hide it, Waverly didn't adjust to it. We'll see what happens I think this should be a good game and I think you'll see West really lean on that rushing attack and winning at the LOS.SiderBlood wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2024 9:43 am How is Waverlys ability to throw the ball and pass block?

I can’t see Waverly winning this. First 2 weeks absolutely, the last 2 weeks no way. Waverly trending down West trending up. I hope to see the Tigs win but I just can’t see it

West has still shown an inability to cover deep balls. Despite having a good defensive line , if the QB has time to complete a 3 step drop, set his feet and throw over the top , it will present problems for us. On the flip, if Waverly struggles with the run they are in for a heavy dose of it. Not big break ways but you’ll see 5-8 yard chunks from Parker and bishop all night. This past win was a big one for West, in order to turn the ship. Two D3 wins in a row and a chance for another big pointer getter here completely changes the dynamics of the season with a win here.

West grinds out a win for the third straight week
Re: Week 5: Waverly (3-1) at Portsmouth West (2-2)
Probably 2 schools that over time could not be any more different from each other, especially in the type of offense that they rely on. Not sure just how I feel about this one. After a couple of tough games to start the season, West seems to be playing with a lot of confidence right now. To start the season, I thought the Tigers were a threat for the SOC-2, now I'm not sure. Hope that both Schools have an injury free game.
Re: Week 5: Waverly (3-1) at Portsmouth West (2-2)
Really not sure where I stand on this one, West isn't going to stop the Waverly passing game question is will they setup the defense to slow it down and basically dare waverly to run the ball?? If they do this I think West can pull off the win the rushing attack just isn't good enough and I think west can stop it with playing a 4-2-5 type of look at their DL will be able to control the LOS. If West plays typical West coverage Waverly could get up in this one and force West out of their comfort zone. Let's go Waverly by 14 but won't be shocked at all if it's West that takes this one it's all going to come down to the adjustments for me in this one.

Waverly has the fire power on the offensive side of the football with some nice skilled guys. Don’t see West being able to match them offensively or defensively at the skill spots.

Don’t like the matchup at all. I’ll tell you right now, if they get it over the top on us it will get out of hand. Or if they get up quick early. We are not built to score quick and from behind. Hoping we can stall them long enough and get a few stops and turn over, giving us the opportunity to play our game and control the clock. And let our running game wear them down physically.

Yep, and probably a game where if I'm West I want the ball 1st and see if I can lean heavy on that run and kill the clock plus score. I just think if Waverly gets the ball first and hits a big play deep putting West behind the 8 ball early could be disaster.SiderBlood wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 11:20 am Don’t like the matchup at all. West has a shot, need to come out and play a good first half, be interesting to see how Waverly responds after a sluggish showing in Lucasville.

Re: Week 5: Waverly (3-1) at Portsmouth West (2-2)
I think Valley and West are kind of similar. Valley had a great gameplan but Waverly’s passing attack hit some big plays. Valley played smash mouth football and kept Waverly on the sideline a bunch. If West can do that and stop the big play they will have a shot. But I agree with the poster who said West can’t get down and expect to comeback.
Re: Week 5: Waverly (3-1) at Portsmouth West (2-2)
Talk Bout 2 different philosophies- can Waverly protect the QB and can west control the los, that is the 2 main thoughts to me. I may take in this game this week.

Going with West, because they are from Scioto County. Should be a good game to catch

Re: Week 5: Waverly (3-1) at Portsmouth West (2-2)
West can’t stop the pass. Every team has hit deep balls against them. The defenders don’t turn to look for the ball. Waverly will stack the box to stop the run. Waverly will win big because West starts late every game. 35-14 Waverly.
