Waverly used to be Black and Gold?

Post by OhioHsHelmets »

I found these photos of Waverly playing Portsmouth and then some against Piketon. Any idea what seasons these were from? Why are they black and gold?

Those pictures are from 2002-03

Derek Dewitt was the Head Coach. I believe they changed back to Orange and Black in 2004 when Rusty Wright took over.

I wish Waverly would go back to this! 3 teams in the same conference with orange and black gets old.. switch it back up some!

I think with the new color technology that they have for uniforms now, this could be a really good look from time to time.

Those are sharp! The black top and gold bottom is a good look.

smurray would probably be a better historian, but from what I remember some folks made the decision to change colors and ordered uniforms before the board approved the change and it ended up not being approved.

I remember playing JV games against Waverly in those uniforms back in that time frame.

I think they’re sharp!

The actual color GOLD. Not yellow that’s called gold. These are great and as another poster said with what technology is out there for uniforms now I would be eager to see Waverly go back to these

If I'm remembering correctly their uniforms looked like the Buckeyes in the early 90's. The only differences was they wore orange instead of scarlet and the reward stickers on the helmets were tiger paws.

Would be a great look for a rivalry game or some other "big" game. Does anybody have their record in these unis?

Coach DeWitt had Waverly rocking them jerseys. I remember it during the 2002-2003 seasons they had those fresh black and Vegas Gold uniforms. Looked sharp then remember they had to go back to orange and black didn’t know it wasn’t approved but yes they looked great.

My parents said back in the 50's and 60's both football and basketball uniforms were black and gold (e.g. Purdue) while the official school colors were always black and orange. Dad said orange started to appear as lettering on basketball togs under Hawhee in the late 60's in the Denny Thompson - Phil Miller era.

They say clothes make the man, but the Tigers need to work more on player development in the weight room instead of worrying about uniforms

Can’t lie to you I haven’t saw a correctly posted image like this on here in quite awhile. I genuinely thought it was an ad until I read your post a time over

As someone stated, Waverly uniforms used to be Gold and Black in 50s and 60s. The last picture is from the 2001 season as they played Piketon at home. I believe #7 is Jay Gullion and #20 is Zach Montavon. The 2001 team went 8-2 lost to Portsmouth by 2 and Portsmouth West by 7. Had 20.00 computer points and was 9th in playoff standings. This was long time Waverly Coach Ed Bolin's final year and Coach DeWitt took over for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. Coach Wright took over in 2004 and the uniforms went back to orange and black. I also believe girls basketball wentto gold and black during this time as well.

blast from the past.
Coaches Dewitt was such a great guy. I was the OC with him at Waverly those 2 years and man the Waverly faithful were all such good people.
The game at chesapeake when the fans were yelling racist stuff into the locker room at halftime-- the kids were wanting to go outside and fight. Coach Dewitt was like if I react to them they win. we just have to go out and win the football game.
We went 90 yards in the last minute to win. Lewis Copeland scored on inside trap from the 5 on the last play of the game.
It was a true testament of the character of a great human being.

I was honored to learn and grow as a person with them
