Coldwater
I was in Columbus this week and ran into a Coldwater coach. He said they are anticipating being bumped up to Division 5 in football for next season. It will be interesting to see the Division 6 state champs playing Division 5 ball. They have an excellent program up in Coldwater for many years.

Every year is a new team with new players. How many starters are you returning on offense and defense??ohbuckeye2 wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 2:21 amAwesome, to be the best you gotta beat the best.?Right now, Ironton is the D5 State Champions.Pirate1745 wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:40 pm I was in Columbus this week and ran into a Coldwater coach. Re: Coldwater
Just looking at the roster, looks like 6 or 7 on each side of the ball with 2 move ins that started at their old schools. We were deep last year, rotating players in and out like crazy, so a lot of experience returning.Pirate1745 wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 7:45 amEvery year is a new team with new players. Re: Coldwater
Coldwater is another one of those public schools that never seem to have their fans whine about playing private schools. Gotta love that.
Re: Coldwater
Keep in mind, small private schools either got moved up due to CB (Ursuline and Mooney) or have been decimated due to lack of attendance, budget cuts, etc. Plus, the increase in the number of divisions also benefited the small public schools. Consider that Coldwater has 385 students yet was D6, while Ursuline has 440 and is D3.LICKING COUNTY FAN wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 10:50 am Coldwater is another one of those public schools that never seem to have their fans whine about playing private schools. Back in the 70’s and 80’s, with fewer divisions and private schools not punished heavily due to CB, the MAC schools won squat in football. All the expansions and changes with CB definitely benefited them.

Coldwater beat Mooney a huge catholic to win the d4 title.

Re: Coldwater
Also Versailles won multiple titles in the 4 team playoff system but that was before joining the Mac
Re: Coldwater
All MAC schools combined won 1 state title in the 1970’s and 1980’s; Minster in 1989. Ironton had 2 and Burg 1 at that point.Rolltanks wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 3:30 pm Minster

Coldwater won their first title in 2005. ML in 2000.
44 of the 49 state titles came after OHSAA moved football to six divisions. 37 of the state titles came after playoffs were expanded to 8 teams per region.
My point: the changes over the years have favored smaller public schools while also marginalizing small private schools by moving them into larger divisions.
Re: Coldwater
Talk about completely missing the point.Rolltanks wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 6:17 pm So they had more state titles than you and burg before the move to 8 teams got you
Moving from three divisions to five divisions was a big change. That guaranteed two more state champs. Moving to six divisions added another. And seven divisions one more. So based on simple math, it’s easier to win a state title now with seven divisions than in the 70’s when only three divisions existed.
Add to that CB and the impact on private schools. This resulted in most private schools moving up 1 to 2 divisions from where they would have been based strictly on enrollment. Example: Ursuline was D3 this year but would have been D5 before CB.
So how did this benefit the smaller schools? By moving private schools up. D1 felt no impact using CB since the big catholic schools couldn’t move up. D2 also didn’t see a massive impact. D3 - D5 saw some private schools go to bigger divisions while also getting private schools that would have been in smaller divisions. D6 and D7 saw a few schools stay but also others leave. Didn’t get an influx of any new schools since there are no smaller divisions from which private schools could rise.
So the CB was a clear benefit to the smallest schools by moving some private schools up but wasn’t much of a benefit to the larger divisions. Hence why private schools have such enormous success in the larger divisions and lesser success (since the changes) in the smaller divisions.

Re: Coldwater
Yes, this is why Harvest Prep is in D5. They are the size of a D7 school like Green but CB bumps them up. It happens to all private schools. It is also going to happen to schools like Ironton who gets kids to OE from 7th grade and up. Any school that is bumped up due to CB is going to struggle since they don’t have the numbers as the other teams. Just think if Coldwater and Kirtland both get bumped back up to D5 where they were before since they competed in D6 last year.RBH23 wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 10:11 pmTalk about completely missing the point.Rolltanks wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 6:17 pm So they had more state titles than you and burg before the move to 8 teams got you

Re: Coldwater
Enrollments don't get figured out until 2026 so the only way Coldwater bumps to 5 is if we have a high Competitive Balance number. Which is unlikely.Pirate1745 wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:40 pm I was in Columbus this week and ran into a Coldwater coach. However, in 2026 there is a very good chance we'll be back in D5 as we have bigger classes coming.

Yeah, Coldwater doesn’t try to poach kids from other area high schools and has been building a quality program from the ground up for years.StateChampion2012 wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 4:40 pmEnrollments don't get figured out until 2026 so the only way Coldwater bumps to 5 is if we have a high Competitive Balance number. That’s why their CB number is around 0-5.

Re: Coldwater
I would imagine that the expansion from 4 to 8 and then 16 teams per region helped the MAC more than anything. That league schedule has created scenarios where 3rd or 4th place teams are competing for State Titles.
Re: Coldwater
That definitely puts more teams into the playoffs with a chance to win.portsmouth_98 wrote: Tue Mar 04, 2025 7:34 am I would imagine that the expansion from 4 to 8 and then 16 teams per region helped the MAC more than anything. But the division expansion was huge. Instead of nearly all the MAC teams in single A with maybe 1 or 2 in AA, now you have MAC teams in D4, D5, D6, and D7. So instead of possibly one, maybe two, state champs each year, they can have up to four.
Add on top of that the CB that drove most private schools into the larger divisions, and it became the perfect storm for the MAC.

Re: Coldwater
We played Coldwater in 2015 before the playoff expansion in Xenia and they had a very strong program even as well.
