PARADES All-America High School Football 2008
If his career up to this point is any indication, Terrelle Pryor of Jeannette, Pa., may one day add his name to the list of all-time great quarterbacks from western Pennsylvania—among them Joe Montana, Dan Marino and Joe Namath. Pryor is the Player of the Year on PARADE’s 45th annual All-America High School Football Team. He leads a roster of 58 standout athletes from 24 states, selected by coaches, journalists, scouts and recruiters.
“Terrelle is one in a million,†says his coach, Ray Reitz. “A lot of longtime observers in this area say he’s the best athlete to play here. I know he’s the best I’ve ever seen.â€
Pryor is the first Pennsylvania high school athlete to pass and rush for more than 4000 yards each in his career. He completed 232 of 399 passes for 4340 yards and ran 435 times for 4238 yards. In all, his play led to 125 touchdowns.
As a senior, Pryor led the Jayhawks to a 16-0 record and a state Class AA championship. Despite playing only five complete games this year (he was rested when victory was certain), he rushed 143 times for 1899 yards and 33 touchdowns and completed 87 of 130 passes for 1889 yards and 23 scores. He scored or passed for a total of 58 touchdowns, including a TD reception in the state finals and a 100-yard returned interception in the semifinals.
“Terrelle has tremendous physical skills,†says Reitz. “You hear the word ‘great’ used to describe a lot of athletes, but it fits him.â€
Also an elite basketball player, Pryor has a B-plus academic average and college-scholarship offers coast-to-coast, with Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State at the top of his list.
The Team
Top Running Back: Darrell Scott, St. Bonaventure, Ventura, Calif.
In the last two years, Scott rushed for 5637 yards and scored 78 touchdowns. This season, he led his team to a 14-1 record and state Division III title by running 275 times for 2443 yards and 33 TDs. He’s undecided about colleges.
Top Receiver: Julio Jones, Foley High, Foley, Ala.
Jones earned state Mr. Football hon-ors this season after catching 68 passes for 1179 yards and 16 TDs. Also a track standout, Jones is being courted by a number of schools, including Alabama, Florida State, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
Top Lineman: Baker Steinkuhler, Southwest, Lincoln, Neb.
Three-time all-state honoree Steinkuhler is the son of 1983 college football lineman of the year Dean Steinkuhler. He had 72 tackles and five sacks as a defender this season and also excels on offense. He’ll join his brother Ty as a Nebraska Cornhusker in the fall.
Top Linebacker: Nigel Bradham, Wakulla, Crawfordville, Fla.
Bradham was credited with 122 tackles and four TDs. Off the field, he talks to kids about avoiding drugs. A December graduate, Bradham enrolled at Florida State in January.
