I am proud of each and every one of our Pirates after that great game. Ironton also came out and played hard. The Burg's new kicker, Aaron White, was so calm and cool under pressure! WOW! WHAT A HERO Lang's leadership and strong decision making in the first two quarters to get the Pirates rolling, Stegman's snag in the endzone from a gutsy throw, White's strong presence in the middle of the D and O, Hopper's contributions, Shankie Jordan's fantastic running out of the backfied, there were many more players who contributed in many ways. It was truly a team effort.
I did not doubt the Pirates one little bit, right down to the wire. The Burg, once again, has better athletes who are strong, fast, smart and determned. They also have a terrific new coach to continue the strong PIrate coaching tradition that has carried our youngsters through many years. Congrats on a career opening win. Could the Pirates have begun a few years of destiny, opening the can with a statement crazy blitz last year, then backing it up again with a close victory with heart this year? We hope so. It would be good to rattle off about a dozen or more wins over Ironton in the opener for the next few years. It has been a long time coming.
Ironton looked good during the second half. I wasn't impressed in the first half at all, but they couldn't get the breaks (for once!) in the close game at the end. Too many years the Tigers went home the victors after a close one,. Not tonight. Burg sure knows how it felt for years coming on the bad end of the close games. So, once again for this year the Burg celebrates an opening night win over Ironton. It's good (as usual) to be a Pirate.

Before I comment on the game, I'll let the score of the game speak for all of the bullcrap that was on this thread over the last few weeks. Alot of Ironton fans gave the Burg no respect and by predicting a huge blowout, by Ironton, just set themselves up to look bad. I could get on here and say this person said this or this person said that, but I don't think anything needs to be said. Those people know who they are and maybe now they will give the Burg the respect they deserve. Great job by both teams. That game tonight is what HS sports are all about. The game is never over until the horn sounds.

This game was exactly how I expected it. Right down to the wire. I don't think you could have scripted it any better. Starting QB gets hurt and the backup, in his first varsity game, comes on and leads the Pirates to victory. WOW!!!!! what a game.

Congrats to Coach Woodward on his first win as a varsity coach. I look for him to have a long tenure at the Burg. I don't think the Burg could have asked for a better coach.

Good luck to Ironton the rest of the season. Someone had mentioned on here that Murphy was a beast and I would have to agree with that. I think the heat did get to him early, but once it cooled down, he seemed to be alright. He has the potential to play at the next level.

Good luck Pirates next week at South Point. Need to play each game like it is the first game of the season and not have any letdowns. The Ironton game is over and now you have to put it behind you and move on to the next game.

Forgot to add, talked to a guy from the Q and he said the game would be on channel 66, if you have an antenna and would be on the on demand channel in about week, so I guess I can wait to watch this instant classic then.

Also, I want to apologize to Bryan White for calling him Brandon tonight. Looked right at him and told him, "Good game, Brandon". My apologizes, so here it is right, "Great game, Bryan."

I'd be willing to bet that just like after last years loss that 95% of the ones that ran their mouths about kicking the Burgs a$$ and blowing out the Burg will disappear and never be seen on this thread again. So far I have seen a few of the Ironton regulars on here giving the Burg their due and I want to thank them for that. To the others, go ahead and run and hide just like you all did last season.

Good luck to both teams the rest of the season, hopefully a 15 game season for each.

I think that these two teams were about as evenly matched as you can get, the only difference in this game than in the close games in years past is that the Burg made the plays down the stretch that they needed to get them the "W"

Burg came prepared to play this game even though there was a lot of doubters who thought that they lost to much from last years. Granted they did, but most of the players on the filed tonight got alot of playing time last year, especially on the defensive side of the ball and what is the saying?

Defense wins championships.

This game is just one of a ten game schedule. Ironton will recover from this and go onto have a very good season. Burg will savor this game for a day or two and then it is back to practice.

didn't burg have 2 turn overs once in thier own territory that led to a score ?and another when they were driving in to tiger territory?and a 15 yd penalty on the same drive?

turnovers put ironton down in the 1st half and turnovers let them back in it in the 2nd half.

Congrats to the Pirates.........sitting in Spartan Stadium watching the Trojans, I had the earphones on listening to Snuffy call a GREAT game.......what a game it must have been! Sounds like two good teams battled and the outcome had a hollywood ending.

Good job Burg. From what I head Ironton needs to learn to hold onto the ball. You cant get down to a good team in the first half like that and expect to come back. Good job to Ironton for fighting back also. Hopefully they can learn from ths loss and bounce back next week.

Ironton beat themselves. Those fumbles cost us the game. nonetheless, a loss is a loss.

i can't believe i'm saying it, but congrats to the Burg.

coach,

Sorry it does not work that way. Saying they beat themselves robs Wburg of a great effort. Wburg beat ironton. Besides when you give up that td on the last drive figure it out. The Tigers have problems. The Tigers of old would have shut down that last drive.

Thats truth. I'm sick of seeing people on here saying "Tigers beat themselves, take away this or that and its an Ironton victory". No, its not, this is a game where each team is given the same opportunities, and whichever team seizes that opportunity is the better one. The obvious truth here is the better team won.

;-) Oh, calm down everybody. It's just week one. Sounds like Burg-Ironton
was a great game and entertaining to see. Applaud the athletes for the way they
played and let's move along...

i myself am glad that burg won! and i even picked ironton. i got so tired of seeing ironton posters say it was gonna be a blowout this and that. i mean i have nothing but respect for most ironton posters. BUT THATS WHY GAMES ARE NOT PLAYED ON PAPER.
