Ok, some of you are saying Ironton doesn't schedule Coal Grove because they have nothing to gain (but that doesn't stop you from scheduling Wheelersburg and Nelsonville-York - both DV). The there are others like this guy who say the OVC is too scared to schedule the Tigers.

Rock Hill gave Ironton all they wanted in '05. Why don't you do some research of those two seasons and actually look at the records and tell me that anyone thought CG was "loaded". Do you mean to tell me that when everyone was raising Cain about how terrible Tripplett was and then the year after that when they didn't even make the playoffs that no one in the OVC could have given them a good game? Rock Hill actually made it into the playoffs over Ironton - after losing to Coal Grove and South Point! They didn't even get a share of the OVC.... Give or take 5-10 years, Ironton will be at or near the same level of play as the good OVC teams.... if they aren't already.
I don't think that Coal grove or Rock Hill are any closer to competing with Ironton than they ever were.

Make up your minds...
Burg and Nelsonville York are in different catergories than those two teams. Burg and York are winners and playoff contenders year in and year out. For an example look at P. West they are on the verge of going undeafeated and might not make the playoffs why? Because the scheduled a bunch of OVC teams that have given them about 0 points towards the playoffs. On the other hand Burg and York gives you a ton of points if you beat them.
I remember the '87 season...I was playing at the time...and Coal Grove started taunting us before the game about how good brian davis was...heck he was setting all the records that year...all it did was fire us up...and yes for a game against an ovc team..which was unheard of at the time...when we started the game it was 38-0 before it hardly started and brian davis had negative yardage. Then after the half was over..Lutz inserted the 3rd and 4th teams...and when the 4th team defense came into the game davis scored his two touchdowns...coal grove didn't pull their starters the whole game...it wasn't much of a game...
After it was over..all the coal grove mom's wrote sob stories in the newspaper about how their kids were good kids and how ironton fans were so aweful...here..we at ironton as players only listened to their taunting before the game and took care of business where it needed to be done at...on the field...
I spoke to Lucas later the next spring about him playing ironton again...he quickly answered...no...never again..it's not good for the kids or the fans...didn't want to have any part of it...because of the embarrassment....I wouldn't have either...lucas is a good man...good coach...but smart not to do it again...
Ok, first of all: Coal Grove ended up finishing 6-4 that year. They got blown out by Wheelersburg, 42-0. They got beaten by Gallipolis, 14-17. All of their wins came from the OVC but they lost to Fairland, too. Coal Grove owned the OVC in the 80's, so the 1987 season was just a nothing-special, mundane year for Coal Grove. I don't know how Ironton fared that year, but I do know they won the State Championship in '89. Secondly: that was a completely different era for Ironton Football - 20 years ago. Enough about the "Glory Days". If you've read any of my posts on this thread, you'll notice that I have my doubts about the future of Ironton Football and I definitely don't think the program is where it was 20 years ago - I think most of you will agree with me. And again, I'm not trying to be disrespectful
I THINK IRONTON IS NOT WHAT THEY USE TO BE. THEY DONT GET THE RECRUITS IN LIKE THEY DID BACK IN THE 80s @90s. THEY GET 2 OR 3 FROM THE OVC AND THEN BASH THE OVC TEAM. I THINK IRONTON SHOULD HAVE 8 OR 9 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH ALL THE TALENT THAT WENT THROUGH THERE
We are also MUCH better than the Canadian teams we play, but we still play them. I do wish they would schedule us..it would be a great gate.
Thats a different story scheduling the Canadian teams. Playing a team like that is a once in a while thing. Its cool for both the fans and players alike to get a chance to play a team from somewhere far away.
Once was enough, believe me. Scheduling those teams doesn't prepare us for league games whatsoever. I wish we wouldn't schedule any Canadian teams anymore. BORING games to say the least. ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
WOW.........never thought I'D see the day that Coal Grove would try and do some smack talking against the Tigers .... I don't care who you are that's funny
Personally, I don't think they are talking smack,,,just pointing out the fact that Ironton football isn't anywhere what it used to be. Being from Logan, I got sick of hearing all the HISTORY of Ironton. It's just that, history...has nothing to do with the present or future of your program. You guys just can't stand it if anyone suggests that they might just be able to compete with the almighty Tigers. Your chest-thumping days will soon come to an end in my opinion.

I would say Logan has 1 more good year in them and then they will hit that slippery slope down hill as we are passing them going back up the hill.
CG may have beaten Ironton in 98. They were beyond awful, by their own standards. Lutz' only losing record (3-7).HOWEVER, ask St. Joe's how that worked out for them in basketball that season? Anyways, a bit off topic there.....
I also agree that Ironton is not what it used to be. However, I believe they will field some very good teams in the upcoming years. Ironton, IMHO would still dominate the OVC year in and year out. There may be some exceptions on occasion, but the result would be the same as in previous attempts.
The end result would be great for $$$, but lousy for postseason preparation.
HEY I WOULD LOVE TO SEE COAL GROVE AND IRONTON PLAY NEXT YEAR I WAS AN IRONTON FAN I STILL LIKE IRONYON /BUT I HAVE AGRANDSON THAT PLAYS FOR COAL GROVE I GO WATCH EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT THERE BETTER THAN WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS JUST GO SEE THEM PLAY ONE FRIDAY NIGHT AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT / MY FAMILY IS A BIG IRONTON FANS I HAD TWO NEPHEWS THAT PLAYED FOR IRONTON AND A BROTHER THEY PLAYED UNDER BOB SO MY POINT IS I GET TIRED OF PEOPLE IN IRONTON DOGGING COAL GROVE SO SO JUST BRING IT ON AND THE BEST TEAM WINS / I AM SURE THERE IS A FEW GUYS THAT WOUL LIKE TO PLAY IRONTON/

The problem still exhist for Ironton and Coal Grove...Coal Grove isn't playing as good of football as they have played in the past...and Ironton would have pounded them in those couple of years that they were actually above aweful...Ironton needs to find some revenue yes...but to play a team in the ovc that isn't above aweful most of the time...look at south point...that was a good game 1 to get the season started on a good note...but other than that...they were never going to help the kids get ready for the season....It doesn't benefit the Coal Grove team, all it does there is get the mom's of the players all upset that people are saying that their kids aren't what they have been putting them on a pedistal to think they are...and the other thing is...we have good competition in our back yard that we aren't playing...finally Russell got the guts to play ironton once Lutz retired...and now they are sick seeing that he's back...and winning..lol...I would love to see Ironton play raceland..although they are div 6..they work over ashland every year and ashland normally plays good ball...greenup and boyd aren't really into football so that would be a big point getter...but not much competition...but we always have belfry and Lawrence County KY that always seem to give us good competition...If we were to play any team in the ovc...I think the best school would be Rock Hill ..Rock Hill is having a down year...and it might last two seasons..but they are going to be pretty good in the future...I think the coach is doing a great job and he will have that program going in the right direction as soon as it is possible...He has had some decent talent...but not any great talent and done a fine job getting good play out of his team...Give him a couple of years and I think that would be a real good game and a great money cow....
No disrespect, but are you kidding when you say we should play Rock Hill above all other OVC teams. Coal Grove has owned RH as has most other ovc teams despite the fact they are by far the largest school in the conference. Just calling it the way I see it. Do I think CG would be competive for the most part, no..but they would have more a chance than RH. RH hill made playoffs last year with their supposedly loaded team and still lost to Coal Grove.
