blue devils freshman have had a great season, finished with a tough loss, good to talk

with coach rob. as for the game, young gallians played hard. the burg had some jvs

on the field and gallia played them strong. it only helps us get better to play a more

seasoned bunch.congrats to the burg on the victory, look for this young group of

blue devils to be tough and progress thru there jv year, only 16 strong, but a solid

bunch of kids. future looks bright for gahs.

Burg had a couple of sophomores who does not usually get a lot of playing time on JV filling out the line up in spots, I noticed three playing at various times but not usually in at the same moments--one played safety, one subbed in on the offensive line at times and one played on the defensive line on the last series of the game. But I don't know everyone of course. All the skill positions were freshmen. There were only like 14 freshmen and with the starting quarterback out with a season ending injury in the second game, they had essentially only 2 subs but still wanted to play the season.

On the first play from scrimmage, Wheelersburg freshman, Alex Shears intercepted a pass and ran it in for the TD. The 2-point conversion was good and the Pirates led 8-0 before the offense took the field.

Gallia answered with a long drive to about the 15 yard line. Several made-passes in long situations or quarterback scrambles kept the drive alive. But the Pirates ended up taking over about the 19 yard line after a sack on fourth down.

Wheelersburg scored every time they had the ball offensively in the first half. Most of the touchdowns were on pass plays.

Some one can correct me but I recall freshmen Brett Hood, Austin Hall and Bobby Cowman each having touchdown receptions from Alex Shears.

Freshman, Brady McCain had a pass interception to end the first half.

Offensively I believe that Wheelersburg only ran the ball in the second half. The only touchdown of that half was another interception by Shears returned for a touchdown.

After the TD and a short kickoff, the Devils started their drive on the Pirates' 47 and made some inroads on that last drive.

This is all from memory as I was not making notes for this game. ;-)

I know that the entire starting offensive line-up for Wheelersburg were freshman except for one of the linemen and he switched off and on with a freshman.

When Burg played Valley, Valley brought in at least one junior and Burg still beat them 28-0.

But all skill positions were freshmen. It just took them till their last couple of games to come together. Their final record was 3-5. The other win was against Minford by a score or 30-6. The reason the game against Ironton was cancelled was because all of the backfield was hurt.

Good Luck to all the Burg freshmen at the Varsity level next year.

Get over it. Don't show those Gallia freshmen how to make excuses. Move on.

Why did Wheelersburg cancel against Ironton then if they had enough freshmen?

By the way, here is a comparison of frehmen scores just from a neutral observer:

Ironton 28 Gallia Academy 0
Ironton 24 Gallia Academy 14... yeah they played twice
Ironton 30 Russell, KY 6

Wheelersburg 32 Gallia Academy 0
Wheelersburg 0 Russell, KY 30

GO TIGERS!!!

We had enough freshmen to play Ironton providing all were healthy. Both QB's were hurt, one of the running backs was out with a concussion and one of the receivers was out with a shoulder injury. That left only 10 healthy freshmen.

Trust me, if all players were healthy, the game would have been played.

I am not making excuses. I am just saying that you have freshman football because most boys are still in that growing stage and are not ready for jv football .1 year or a year and a half makes a huge difference in kids in there early teens

WHY DO WE MAKE SOOO MANY EXCUSES WHEN WE GET BEAT?
Every game we lose someone cheated us or the Refs had it in for us? Do we ever just lose?

I heard when Marietta beat Blue there were actually a couple of Ohio University's JV players playing for Marietta!!
GOD get over it!

I LOVE the Blue Devils but the Arrogance wears me out!!
I have watched this class since these boys were young and they are not super talented or deep.

Wheelersburg has had a all freshman team for the last 35 years .This years freshman only has 36 boys in the whole class,so do we not play for one year or bring a few 10th graders .I think you know the answer. It will help the Blue Devils and the Pirates in the long run

My guess would be that after watching the varsity games the last couple of years the Wheelersburg freshmen were too intimidated to play your mighty Tigers.

( I wonder why they don't make a smiley with the little guy just shaking his head from side to side) ?

( I thought this thread was about Gallia and Wheelersburg). :)

wheelersburg has a fine freshman team, gallia has small numbers and size, but will never quit, i filmed the game for the blue devils, and was joined in the press box by
coach woodard and his dad. yes there were jv players on the burg team, but coach
rob. pointed out that these youngmen didnt see alot of playing time, and freshman
injuries caused a loss of players. the blue devils make no excuses for the loss, they
will learn to play smarter and more disciplined, this is a very young team most of these kids are 14yrs old, keep the faith blue, you will succeed,

Hey TheMalteseFalcon,

I already explained why the game was cancelled with Ironton. It had nothing to do with Burg being intimidated. I think it would have been a good game. When this bunch of kids were in the 7th grade, Ironton won 44-6, then as 8th graders, Ironton won 14-6. Granted Ironton had a win streak against us going, but Burg improved greatly from 7th to 8th grade so I think it would have been a good game. Hopefully, we can play the game next year as JV's.

GO BURG!!!

Well, it was 14-0....Ironton's best lineman went out on the first drive
Leaving us with 16 players....We still did not cancel
