Crunching Regional Final Numbers

Post by Bobcat Thunder »

There are 48 teams still fighting for a state championship. Eighteen of those teams were the top-ranked team in their region when the playoffs began. Here is the list of seeds remaining:

18-#1 seeds
12-#2 seeds
6-#3 seeds
4-#4 seeds
3-#6 seeds
3-#7 seeds
2-#5 seed
0-#8 seeds

Obviously, if everything happened as it should, there would be four #1-#2 matchups in each division. That is not the case in any division, though. It almost happened in Division VI, but #3 Delphos St. John's edged #2 Carey 21-14 last week. That set up this:

#1 Hopewell-Loudon
#2 St. Paul

#1 Ada
#3 Delphos St. Johns

#1 River
#2 Malvern

#1 Mechanicsburg
#2 Sidney Lehman Catholic

The division with the least amount #1 and #2 seeds remaing is Division V (a total of three).

#1 Ursuline
#3 Kirtland

#1 Patrick Henry
#2 Liberty-Benton

#5 Bishop Ready
#6 Liberty Union

#4 West Jefferson
#7 Marion Local

As you can see, there are two Division V games that have two teams with a #4 seed or lower. There are four matchups like this:

Division II
#5 Akron Hoban
#6 Tallmadge

Division IV
#4 Genoa
#7 Ottawa-Glandorf

Division V
#5 Bishop Ready
#6 Liberty Union

#4 West Jefferson
#7 Maria Stein Marion Local

The lowest seeds left in the playoffs are Marion Local, Ottawa-Glandorf, and Sunbury Big Walnut. Big Walnut is also one of four teams still defending its state championship (Marion Local, Coldwater, Big Walnut, Cincinnati Anderson).
