Does it take two teams to play a football game or was Nelsonville forced to play by themselves on the muddy field last year at Alexander? I guess I'm not understanding why the comments about the field conditions last year, it's making no sense to me. Two teams playing on the same field but one whines that they had to play in unfair conditions. I'm very puzzled, maybe there has been a rule change since I played eons ago.

yea we played on the same field, and that was fair.......and im not making excuses dont get me wrong, NY lost fair and square, BUT when NY practices on turf all year, and the whole week getting prepared for alex, and alex practices on MUD the entire week, i think theres a GREAT disadvantage.......was it just me, or did anyone else get to the game early in 09 to see coach Arno hosing down the field :122246 :122246 :122246
You're a moron

I don't think they are over rated. I think they faced the best defense in the TVC.

Congrats Buckeyes! 20th all-time TVC Championship in football!

It's nice to have a big win like that over Alexander after last year. Last year was like an episode out of the Twilight Zone. Now all is right with the world again! :)

NELSONVILLE — Down just 6-3 halfway through the third quarter, Alexander was 18 minutes of good football away from its first league title in 14 years.

Nelsonville-York’s Dustin Young made sure that Spartans’ drought would last at least another week.

Young ran over Alexander’s title dreams Friday at Boston Field, leading the Buckeyes to a critical 30-3 victory. The win clinches at least a share of the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division for Nelsonville-York, the 20th in school history.

The two teams came in unbeaten in league play, meaning the winner gained at least a piece of the crown.

The Buckeyes’ seventh league crown in eight seasons was made possible by Young’s power running. The junior had 170 yards rushing on 26 carries, scoring two touchdowns.

“Dustin picked and choose his holes and if he had to step it out, he stepped it out,” Nelsonville-York head coach Dave Boston Jr. said. “He’s one of those kids, he’s got great vision. We’re proud of his efforts tonight.”

Young quickly turned the tense game into another Buckeye title. Holding onto that slim 6-3 lead, he led a nine-play scoring drive that gave Nelsonville-York (7-2, 4-0 TVC) breathing room. Young’s 29-yard touchdown run with 1:13 to play in the third was followed by Daniel Kline’s two-point conversion run. That put Nelsonville-York ahead 14-3.

Young had seven carries for 62 yards on the 71-yard drive. On his scoring run, he weaved through the offensive line and to the sideline, outrunning the defense.

The Spartans’ (7-2, 3-1 TVC) next drive ended when a false start on fourth-and-1 from their own 47-yard line forced them into a punting situation.

Young made them pay again.

He carried the ball six times for 37 yards on the next drive, taking the ball down to Alexander’s 24-yard line. Nathan Dean delivered the exclamation point from there, finding a wide-open Dillon Knippa over the middle for a touchdown. Dean’s pass to Young on the two-point conversion gave the Buckeyes’ a 22-3 lead they wouldn’t let go of.

“Can’t deny it, they simply out-played us,” Alexander head coach Sean Arno said. “Definitely in the second half as well. I don’t know. I have to look at the film. But they played better than us and they won the game. That’s it.”

The offense produced by Young was more than enough for the Buckeyes’ defense, which stopped Alexander every step of the way. The Spartans’ Cody Lawson finished with 104 yards rushing on 22 carries, but the Buckeyes kept them from sustaining any drives.

The Spartans were held to 177 yards of total offense, and the Buckeyes picked off three passes. Kline picked off one pass, while Garrison Breeze collected two interceptions. He ran the second one back 85 yards for the final touchdown with under two minutes to play.

“We play fast,” Boston said. “We’ve got good athletes, all 11 kids are athletic on our defensive side of the football. They’re smart, they stay home. They don’t beat themselves. Of course they’re physical young men and that’s always a big key.”

Dean also added an effective passing game, throwing for 84 yards. Kline caught four passes for 39 yards.

The teams traded defensive stops throughout the first half before Young struck first. He exploded up the middle for a 29-yard touchdown 1:19 before half, giving N-Y a 6-0 lead at the break.

The Spartans threatened at the start the second half. They drove 63 yards on 11 plays, eating up 6:05 off the clock. Lawson accounted for 50 yards, but the drive stalled at the Buckeyes’ 18-yard line. Josiah Yazdani drilled a 35-yard field goal to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to 6-3.

Boston said the field goal felt like a victory for his defense.

“That was probably their nicest drive of the night,” he said. “They were able to get 3 (points) out of it instead of 6. That was big for our defense.”

Alexander wasn’t able to get any closer after that thanks to Young’s running. Boston also credited the offensive line of Thomas Taggart, Austin McCulloch, Kyle Moore, Isaiah Mello and Dakota Lyon for opening holes in Alexander’s defense.

“The credit goes to our offensive line,” Boston said. “They played their tails off tonight. I felt we dominated a big, defensive line all night long.”

The Spartans will regroup and take on Meigs Friday in Albany. Alexander still has a shot at that league title, but has to hope for an Athens win at Nelsonville-York. The Spartans still should have a chance at making the playoffs if they can knock off the Marauders.

“We’ll regroup and we’ll focus on next week,” Arno said. “And that’s all you can do. It’s week 10. We’ll focus on that. We’ll focus on the task at hand and do the best we can.”

It’s another huge game on deck at Boston Field next week. The Bulldogs will come to Nelsonville and look for a win to gain a piece of the league title. A Buckeye win will give them the title outright, and could put them in the playoffs.

“We told our kids — enjoy the evening, take care and be safe,” Boston said. “But Athens, they know that they can share it now. They’re back in the hunt. They’re going to come full force for us here at Boston Field next week and we’re going to be ready for them.”
