Re: Week 1 Athens (0-0) at Gallia Academy (0-0) - August 30t
Well put!!!! Gallipolis has always had a lot of pride in their sports and have won or lost with class and respect for their opponents!!! Just a bad night for my Blue Devils all the way around!!!

Being a player from the coach eddy era, I may be a little biased but I am not impressed with the devils offensive scheme. IMO we could have decent success getting our lineman out of two point stance and line up in the I and move the ball on the ground every once in a while the offensive line is not as weak as it appears they just need to be better coached and their strengths utilized, also playing 4 different guards last night doesn't help at all you shouldn't be trying to pick starters during week 1 that's what scrimmages are for.

Congratulations to Athens no matter what my comments are here the much better team won last night. First on Defense Gallia has to tackle and tackle better. The 3 down lineman formation kept Athens off balance for almost 3 quarters last night every play gallia had a man come almost unblocked. in re watching the game today i saw 16 plays that a blue devil had a shot at a bulldog in the backfield for a negative play that ended up all being gains of 7 yards or more. huge difference if those tackles are made. With that being said we played a defense daring Athens to run the ball so they did and ran it down are throats.
On offense to many penalties on procedure or lining up improperly. Their is nothing wrong with the offensive philosophy but it is different. If your going to use the spread you must be willing to use all your options. if not you give a good defense a huge advantage. without #7,and #23 in. Then #33 cramping up. we became really only having 2 targets. #2 and #4. the defense ignored or played man on other receivers. the running game was never really a threat because we never worked hard enough to establish it from the beginning.
Both teams kept the other team out of one of their biggest plays. because the way both teams played defense tonight both teams read option was almost non existent. We are not going to win many ball games when we turn the ball over 4 or 5 times a game or more.
When i get a chance to watch it again i will be curious to count exactly how many kids got there first (real) varsity action last night in the first 3 quarters. my guess would be around 15 kids. The way i see that it is about what Athens had a year ago. and if we hit a couple of wide open receivers that we missed by a foot or 2 or we catch a couple of the dropped balls last night then this result would of been similar to last years but in Athens favor.
The line i still say will be just fine. They just need a little time to come together. Last night was not a strength problem. Also i saw very few kids running free last night but the running back that was kept in to block some almost never picked up the man he was supposed to. if you only have 5 lineman and they bring 6 that back has to get in even just a chip on the guy to give the hot route that little extra time.

Will Gallia now drop Athens like they did in basketball?

If Gallia did drop Athens in Basketball then we did Athens a favor... I would be against dropping Athens in Football... Both teams need this game for potential playoff points....... Just like Gallia needs Ironton...... Oh sorry, we never beat them so we dropped them...My bad....

I bet they wish they kept Ironton on the schedule this season, GAHS would have had a really good chance to win this year. I love this series between Athens and Gallia and there sure hasn't been any home field advantage as of late with the road team now winning the last 7 meetings!superblue wrote:If Gallia did drop Athens in Basketball then we did Athens a favor... There has to be a smart arse on every thread! Personally, I would have dropped Athens when they left the SEOAL.
