Actually the streak for Warren was 10 games not 11. It was 11 years between Marietta wins, but only 10 wins for
Warren, so it is 3 to go.

Re: Warren 21 at Marietta 26 Final
Warren came out to play. I definitely think they have improved from last year. I think I've had a few close games with this senior class throughout middle school and freshman football. I think we came out in the first half and played decent, but then the second half we had a few players sitting out. I believe a total of 9 original JV players played quite a bit on defense. Also, the second half we only had one original starting lineman. Zane Eschbaugh and Sean Munfield both had to sit out of offense toward the end of the game. We were inside of the 5 yard line 4 times and couldn't punch it in so we have plenty of things to work on for next week. The team is looking much stronger for the upcoming weeks due to Nick Place, Ryan Offenberger, Jared Ross, and Lance Weppler who missed the 4th quarter, all returning. We just need to focus harder in practice and tend to our injuries and things will be much much better.
Don Drumm was getting pretty loud lastnight. This game was a lot closer than it should've been but it made it one to remember.

But I sure am glad we proved Ron Johnston, a writer for the Marietta times, wrong.

Schenk, stand corrected. Thanks.
Re: Warren 21 at Marietta 26 Final
Warren's football team may be thumping its chest when it steps on the gridiron at Don Drumm Stadium.
The Jim Pifer-coached Warriors, 2-1 overall on the season, will be favored to defeat host Marietta High in Washington County's "big school" showdown, which is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
After all, the Andy Schob-coached Tigers have been struggling of late, and are the owners of an 0-3 mark. Not only that, the orange and black have now dropped eight consecutive games dating back to last season.
It's almost a no-brainer. Right?
But not so fast there sports fans.
When Warren and Marietta hook up on the football field, forget the overall records, because just about anything can and does happen in this rivalry. Fact is, this is the first Southeastern Ohio Athletic League football game for both schools, so the Warriors and Tigers each will truly be 0-0 in SEOAL play at kickoff time.
After Friday night, that will change, of course, and one or the other will be undefeated in league play.
"We're looking at this game as a fresh start," Schob said. "We're 0-3 against some very good football teams. So, our kids are anxious to go out there and prove some people wrong."
The Warriors naturally are hoping that it will be them who's undefeated in league play after Friday night. And, if it is, the royal blue and white will snap a six-game losing streak to the Tigers in the series.
That's right, Warren has not defeated Marietta since 2001 when it claimed a 21-13 decision. On the flip side, from 1992 to 2001, the Warriors won 10 consecutive meetings against the Tigers.
Last year, the Warriors were drilled by the Tigers, 40-7, in their own backyard in Vincent. And, no doubt, they're still smarting a tad from that pasting.
In that 2007 game, Marietta quarterback Cody Westbrook completed 16 of 24 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns, and halfback Mike Shields rushed for three TDs.
"Offense is one of our strengths," Schob said. "We're averaging three touchdowns a game.
"Warren is a much improved team from last year. They're very good at what they do - and that's ball control."
The good news for Warren is Shields has graduated. The bad news is the southpaw-throwing Westbrook is back.
If the Warrior defense doesn't pressure the MHS signal caller, and cover his receivers, like Sean Munfield, Zane Eschbaugh, and Billy Grizer, it's going to be a long night.
"Westbrook is an experienced quarterback, but if we can get to him, it's going to be a good night for us," Pifer said. "If we don't, then we're in trouble."
Warren will also have to be concerned with Marietta's running game as Perry Wheeler is very capable of breaking one.
"Marietta has good athletes," Pifer said, "and they spread it out pretty good on offense."
That being said, MHS is also going to have to do a few things right on the gridiron if it wants to break into the "W" column. Offensively, the Tigers have some big-play people and can light up the scoreboard.
Marietta's problem, though, has been primarily defensive in nature. The Tigers have not been able to stop the run at all this season. And so far, a running back from Hilliard Darby, Cambridge, and New Philadelphia each has churned up a lot of yardage on the orange and black, and had a big game.
"If I was Warren, I'd run against us, too," Schob said. "But hopefully we'll be getting some key people on defense back from injuries, like Lance Weppler (linebacker) and Tyler Barnhart (linebacker).
"And in a couple of weeks, we may be getting Nick Place (lineman) back."
Last Friday night, New Philadelphia tailback Will McEwan rushed for 225 yards on 25 carries and five touchdowns. As a team, the Quakers had 515 total yards.
Really, all opponents have done is just pad their statistics when playing Marietta.
"No excuses," Schob said. "But we're pretty beat up, now, on defense, and playing a lot of younger kids, who are playing hard."
What MHS will need against Warren are 11 players on defense like 5-foot-4, 125-pound senior Garrett Kerr, who was credited with two sacks and seven tackles against New Philadelphia.
Still, Warren running backs' Kaleb Wolfe, Andrew Dunfee, and Andrew Coffman each may be drooling at the thought of a possible career game against MHS. The Warriors have a good, strong, physical line, and are going to run the football right up the gut - and the Tigers know it.
It's almost like Warren could say to MHS, "Stop the run, if you can."
So far this season, the Tigers haven't.
"I think one of the big keys in this game is how long we can keep the football," Pifer said, "and march down the field. We're going to have to be balanced, though."
If Warren has to throw the football, that could be a plus for Marietta. Against Philo, Warrior quarterbacks' Clay Ellenwood and Justin Hilverding combined to throw five interceptions.
In Warren's 14-7 win against visiting Parkersburg South last Friday night, Ellenwood only attempted five passes and completed one, a 42-yard TD toss to Grant Venham.
The Warriors have a little momentum going for themselves after last week's impressive triumph over the Patriots.
"It was a good win (against South)," Pifer said. "The defense played extremely well, and we generated enough offense to win. It was a good team effort."
For the Tigers, it's pretty much now or never. The orange and black schedule really doesn't get any easier the rest of the way.
"The kids are pumped up for this game," Schob said. "If anything, we need to tone it down a bit until Friday."
Said Pifer, "This is a big rivalry game, kind of like Belpre and Parkersburg South. It'll be a fun game to coach."
It was a good motivator for the team!!! Thanks Ron.

Re: Warren 21 at Marietta 26 Final
that reads like Ron was trying to motivate Marietta?
I guess it worked. To think Ron doesn't want his hometown team for his hometown newspaper to win is asinine. I would have hoped people could see through that ridiculous piece.

It was a great game. Let's hope that "our" Washington County teams make some noise in the SEOAL this year. I think they can.

Schenk - your score for the 86 game is way off - it was something like 41-7.
Just FYI!
