Looks like Portsmouth has the toughest schedule in the OVC this year. Wish them well and all the other teams too. Will be watching from up north and hope and pray the OVC becomes a great conference.

This is where the move to the OVC hurts them. Better win 2 out of 3 against Burg, Russell, and Ashland or Playoffs are gonna be in jeopardy.

It's easy to find games you just gotta know where to look. You want games that will be competitive and will bring in a gate which basically means moving to the OVC was counter productive to Ironton. Aside from Portsmouth and Gallipolis the games won't be competitive nor will any of these games bring in money.

I saw where 4th and goal started a topic on coaching changes. very interesting topic, and civil. it looks like the ovc is making strides to change a lot of things. he says the grove is cleanin house. rock hill extended andy 2 more years. there is a couple coaching vacancies and several coaching changes.

I thought it would be good if all the discussions on new coaches could be in one thread.

New Coaches
Portsmouth - Coach Duncan
South Point - Coach Coffman
Zane Trace - Coach Hall
Fairland - Coach Cunningham

Open (?) Jobs
Wellston
Logan Elm
Vinton Co.
Greenfield McClain

If any other jobs are confirmed open, feel free to add them to the list.

So new coaches in the OVC at:

Portsmouth
South Point
Fairland
Coal Grove

Are any of these teams going to be any good? I know what the Hornets lost and what they return, what about the others?

Portsmouth will be athletic but, I don't think their line will be real strong until the end of the season. Plus, you will have to give their new head coach time to turn their program around. I think in a couple years they will be a force to be reckoned with. I have no clue about South Point except their Freshman and now eighth grade classes are LOADED. Fairland is going to be down for a while, and their athletic programs will be under a microscope for quite some time, maybe five years or so. Coal Grove could win this conference with the talent they have year in and year out. There is only two problems they have: discipline and defense. Their defense is giving up 22.1 points per game since 2009. With a team that likes to ground and pound it, giving up three touchdowns per game the last six years just is not cutting it. If their discipline and defense were to get better, they would run roughshod over the conference, with or without Ironton in it.

Boy you're an optimist, but you go to look at the facts. Fact #1 In all their years playing Coal has been close to beating Ironton only a handful of times and that's with their best teams and Ironton a couple years having a horrible teams. Again that's close to beating them not beating them. So for you to say Coal Grove could run roughshod over the league with or without Ironton is just plain wrong.
Fact #2 Ironton and Portsmouth will be 1-2 in the league next year with Coal Grove 3rd everybody else is playing for 4th.

my hope is that the ovc will be at least as competitive overall as the soc. I'd love to see all teams in both these leagues get hitting on all cylinders. hopefully one day the soc/ovc can merge.

I'm not sure about a merger, but it would be nice to see an OVC/SOC II head-to-head challenge set up one weekend and done on an annual basis and maybe even done in multiple sports rather than just football.

Football would have Symmes Valley in place of Webster, Burg-Ironton and West-Portsmouth are rivalry games so those 2 games will always be played in the challenge in all sports. The rest of the teams in the OVC/SOC II can rotate annually.

Even CG/Valley has been at it for a while as well, as SV/Peake has been at it since the 80's

There's also Oak Hill-Rock Hill, but that is a one-sided rivalry. Minford is lso scheduled to play Gallia Academy this year.
