Re: WK 1 Jackson @ Wellston
ironman02.....Thanks for the kind words on the article. In reference to the all-time series record, I referenced last year's preview which said it was the 93rd, and I know I got that from the SEOAL history information which Randy Heath provided us when he did his 80-year history of the league three years ago. At that time, it was 91 meetings, based on that information and they have played twice since. There were some years that the two didn't play for one reason or another. That's where I got my information.
Re: WK 1 Jackson @ Wellston
Most of the information for Jackson's Football History Book came from Randy Heath as well. I do know, however, that former Jackson assistant football coach Pete Woods did extensive research as well. Maybe he was able to find a few of the earlier games through school records, but I can't say for sure. The records that I have date all the way back to 1898. There are a few occasions where Jackson and Wellston played twice in a season during the earliest years, and as you said, there are also years where they did not play at all. I don't have access to Mr. Heath's actual records or past newspaper clippings...my only source of documentation is the history book itself, which was compiled in 2002. I'm sure it is quite hard to find information from so long ago, so it might be nearly impossible to completely confirm either set of records.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Once again, very nice article. Keep up the good work!

Re: WK 1 Jackson @ Wellston
I'm going to be coming down for the game, my wife has a cousin that's a senior and plays LB/Safety for Wellston.
Pulling for the upset in this one, even though the wife is a Jackson Alum (class of 97).
I was a senior at River Valley the lone year that they beat Gallia Academy, and to this day still hold it as one
of my favorite HS memories. Hopefully Wellston can pull off the upset for Matt's senior season.
Is there going to be any sort of gathering of SEOPS members at the game, sure would be interested in meeting some of the people I chat with. Especially the ones that frequent the college sports forum.
Go Wellston!!! (even though your colors are horrible)

Re: WK 1 Jackson @ Wellston
I am not sold on players leaving their school to play tougher competition. Players want to win and usually do not care about competition. Jackson had some boys basketball players leave to go to Oak Hill. I know Oak Hill was going to be good but the competition was weak. No playing Chillicothe (unreal talent ) twice or Zanesville twice, Circleville, Vinton County, Portsmouth twice etc..... Its all about winning no matter how weak the competition. Fans do not care what Southeastern ohio preps posters think, the school board and superintendent do not care how tough the schedule is, deep down most coaches do not care how weak the schedule is because its all about winning. I know most people believe that tougher schedules will make you suddenly into state contenders and maybe thats true. However, coaches need to win now and may not have the time to build that tough state caliber team. I think sometimes we have to just think how much special talent you need to become state contenders. Especially in division two and three football. I hate to say it but I do not think tougher scheduling is going to increase southeastern ohio's talent pool that much. I am rambling I will stop.

4theKids,
Mass distribution of the book is out of my hands. I'll work on making a copy for Jared though...try to get it to you sometime this football season. I'll be in Oak Hill tomorrow night to watch the Oaks...probably see you there.

You're right Couture...Coach Mantell and AD Jeff Hendershott have "firmed-up" Wellston's schedule and I hope the program improves. They're class people.
Alienating players....let alone freshmen, seems a bit selfish and premature. Last time I checked, its a "TEAM" game.
Don't get caught up in an agenda.

Did you see Army's post about the 2009 and 2010 Wellston schedule?
Army wrote:Charles Farquar wrote:Wellston pulled out of the SEOAL at around the same time Meigs did, and they both pulled out for the right reasons. They saw the writing on the wall in the early 80s, they were already having a difficult time in the old SEOAL.Their lack of success in recent years against Jackson had nothing to do with their scheduling. They decided the TVC would be a better fit for them and it would be a league they would be able to compete in year in and year out where even in the old SEOAL that would not have been the case. If scheduling would have been the case , they could have put Desales and Ignatius on their schedule a long time ago and led the series against Jackson. .Wellston has a really tough non-league schedule this year maybe too tough for their situation, with Jackson, Waverly and Gallia. I think the AD needs to do the opposite and lighten the non league up a bit and let the kids have some success.
Charles Farquar,
I agree. I think they need to drop Jackson too. And stop playing teams like Gallia Academy and Waverly.
Wellston left the SEOAL after the 1981-1982 school year to join the TVC.
Meigs and Waverly both left after the 1982-1983 school year. Meigs to the TVC and Waverly back to the SOC.
Ask 2old how successful his Wellston Teams he played on were, in the SEOAL even back in 66, 67 and 68 season.
They defeated Jackson, but couldn't Logan, or Gallia Academy.
Ask him if he is so big on scheduling up, why Logan, who he supports now doesn't play Desales or Upper Arlington in non-league on a consistent basis?
I'll give them Lancaster, but we see what the Golden Gales do to them.
I hope the Golden Rockets pick up some games again with Oak Hill. Maybe a River Valley or Portsmouth East or even a Portsmouth ND in non-league.
Here is Wellston's football Schedule the up coming years.
2009 Football season
Sat 08/29/09 @ Jackson High School 8:00PM
Fri 09/04/09 @ Minford High School 7:30PM

Fri 10/23/09 Meigs High School C.H. Jones Field 7:30PM

2010 Football Season
Sat 08/28/10 Jackson High School C.H. Jones Field 7:30PM
Fri 09/03/10 Minford High School C.H. Jones Field 7:30PM
Sat 09/11/10 @ Lancaster Fairfield Christian Academy 7:00PM
Fri 09/17/10 Nelsonville-York High School C.H. Jones Field 7:30PM
Fri 09/24/10 @ Belpre High School 7:30PM

Fri 10/08/10 @ Athens High School 7:30PM

Fri 10/22/10 @ Meigs High School 7:30PM
Fri 10/29/10 Alexander High School C.H. Jones Field 7:30PM
So, they are dropping Gallia Academy after this season and have a 2 year series with Lancaster Fairfield Christian beginning in 2009 and 2010. The Golden Rockets drop Waverly and add Fayette-Perry in 2010.
Go Golden Rockets
Not exactly tough.

I really wanted to make the trip to Logan, but I have a friend that coaches at Oak Hill and this is the only chance I'll have to watch the Oaks play this year. I plan on seeing Logan when they come to Jackson (and also most likely when they're playing in the playoffs), plus I'll see the new stadium next season. Hope that the Chiefs can take care of Lancaster tonight though. I'll be getting updates from Locos.
Re: WK 1 Jackson @ Wellston
Got to watch some 7th and 8th grade football last night at Jackson Middle School. Congrats to both the Jackson 7th and 8th grade teams on their wins over Portsmouth. The 7th grade won 24-6 while the 8th grade was leading 36-0 with just over 2 minutes remainign when I left. I'm not too familiar with who most of those younger kids are, but there's definitely some talent coming up in the Jackson program. Good luck to both teams the rest of the season.

All I am saying is that the season has'nt even started yet and Randy is talking about talented younger players going elsewhere. Is Randy already seeing the writing on the wall? If your are a talented young player, where better to play than Jackson or Logan. Somewhere at least withing driving distance. Good Luck to the Rockets and the Ironmen the season!
