I think all of those scores and records were compiled by Buzz Fisher and Randy Heath. I have seen some problems in the records but doubt that they would be off by that many.

That is what happened this year as well. Week 2 last year we had River Valley. That contract was up and they did not want to renew so we needed a game. Insert Burg
Week 4 last year we had Trimble. That contract was up and they did not want to renew so we needed a game. Insert Wellston.
Week 9 South Gallia is entering the TVC and were totally making over their schedule so there was no room for us. Insert New Richmond.

Why doesn't Wheelersburg throw more to that giant split end or wide receiver they have? He is very athletic and I saw him snag one out of the air in the Jackson scrimmage that few mortals could have reached but he went up and took it on the fly and kept on rambling.

as far as parking, They will prob. have a lot of people that are usually there early park up in the future baseball field grass area. The Coal Grove game in the playoffs was an unbelievable crowd. I expect a large one for this game but don't see it reaching the playoff game crowd. I hope I am wrong though.

There wont be a pouring rain. And I had a SP/CG fan that says "you will be down 14-0 going into the OAKs backyard", I dont believe that also. Trevor Walls made burg pay for his prowess in his jr year at Waverly. Burg made him pay as a Senior! Who pays this weekend? Burgs defense or the Oaks Qb? We will see. Its almost gametime!!

FOOTBALL: Big bout with ‘Burg
Oaks host Pirates in huge game

OAK HILL -- Early-season prognosticators tabbed the Oak Hill Oaks and the Wheelersburg Pirates as the favorites to capture the football titles in Divisions I and II of the Southern Ohio Conference (SOC) respectively. On Friday night, at Davis Stadium in Oak Hill, those two teams will face off in a game that could well define their seasons. How so?

While it’s only two days into September, Friday’s affair could go a long way as far as playoffs are concerned in Division V, Region 19. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Oaks enter the game with a 1-0 mark and off a 35-7 win over the Chesapeake Panthers. The Oaks’ 15-game regular-season winning streak is also on the line on Friday.

That is the longest such streak of any SOC school --in either division.

A victory over the always tough Pirates, which have won more SOC titles (27) than any other school in Division II, would be a huge feather in the Oaks’ cap and could set the tone for the remainder of the campaign.

Wheelersburg enters off a heartbreaking 12-7 loss to the always formidable Ironton Fighting Tigers, which have won the last two meetings between the two longtime rivals.

The Pirates will undoubtedly come into this game with the Oaks determined not to fall to 0-2.

“They’re an awfully good football team,” said Oak Hill head coach Greg Phillips. They’re big, they’re fast, and have a winning tradition that they don’t take lightly. This is a challenge that we and our team are looking forward to.”

Although looking forward to the challenge, Phillips is well aware that his team can not get off to the same kind of start as it did against the Panthers, where it found itself down early and struggling on both offense and defense.

The Oaks committed two turnovers and trailed 7-0 as late as midway through the second quarter.

“We can’t come out this week and have two turnovers in the first quarter and have the mental mistakes on offense and defense that we had against Chesapeake,” he said. “Those type of errors don’t allow you to get any consistency in your gameplan. We have to play without mistakes.”

Mistakes will kill the Oaks against a team the caliber of the Pirates.

However, they are also capable of making those mistakes as evidenced with Friday’s loss to Ironton, where turnovers and penalties played a big role.

Wheelersburg lost 16 seniors and several starters from last year’s regional semifinalist squad, but return an excellent nucleus led by senior Brandon Schankweiler -- the team’s leading rusher and tackler on defense.

They also return several linemen, which coach Rob Woodward feels will provide what they need on both offense and defense.

“They’re not a fancy team,” says Phillips. “They just line up on both sides of the ball and say ‘if you can stop us or run over us, come ahead and prove it.’’’

The Oaks hope to do just that this Friday.

These two teams have met 17 times in the past with the current series knotted at eight wins and eight losses each with one tie.

They last met in 2005 with Wheelersburg winning 34-13.

That capped off a winless season for the Oaks, and was the first meeting between the two since the 1968 season when the Pirates won 58-22.

Since that winless campaign of five years ago, the Oaks have rebuilt their program under fifth-year head coach Phillips.

Oak Hill completed that process last season with its greatest in school history, including only its second-ever undefeated regular season, its first-ever SOC I championship and its first-ever state playoff appearance.

The Pirates are a powerhouse program, and Phillips answered the question of how the ‘Burg appeared on the Oaks’ schedule.

Oak Hill had been playing, and rolling, River Valley in the second week.

“We didn’t go out shopping for a schedule,” he told The Jackson County Times-Journal on the Oaks’ media day in August. “Week 2 was open, River Valley didn’t want to play us, we want to play good competition and Wheelersburg called us up to play. So we signed a two-year contract with Wheelersburg. It’s not because we think we’re good enough to beat them now or whatever.”

Wheelersburg has won the last four contests between the two schools.

And Phillips thinks the Pirates will be good again this season --win or lose on Friday night.

“For those people that are saying ‘Burg is going to be a .500 team this year, I don’t think they know what they are talking about,” he said. “Wheelersburg isn’t ever going to be a .500 team unless something happens like it starts snowing in August.”

But it’s officially September, and already it’s time for a game of great magnitude.

Hail Hale

Besides the Burg’s Schankweiler, Oak Hill has its own all-Ohio Division V returning running back.

That would be senior tailback Westen Hale, who last week became the school’s all-time leading rusher with his final carry of the first half.

Hale, who stands six-foot-tall and weighs 205 pounds, amassed 116 yards and a hat trick of touchdowns on 18 carries.

His career rushing totals now stand at 2,732 yards and 29 touchdowns with a 7.5 yards per carry average.

He also has 678 career receiving yards, six scores and a 12.6 ypc average.

Hale amassed 1,700 rushing yards last season.
